The Clogwyn Y Person Arete - Trail Magazine
In this months issue of Trail Magazine I climb the Clogwyn y Person Arête 9Grade 3 Scramble) with Ben Weeks. He very modestly paints a picture of me leading the route but he’s an accomplished mountaineer in his own right so it was a pleasure to share leads together. It brought back memories too – it was the first route I ever did with the magazine about 20 years ago. I’ve been fortunate to be involved ever since and have worked with some lovely people. Thanks very much folks for the fun and adventures – here’s to the next ones! Pick up your copy of the magazine today for inspiration, ideas and advice. It’s always a good read.
” A traverse of Crib Goch is as extreme as many hikers will ever want to get. No shame in that. Crib Goch has the potential to be a slice – an extraordinarily narrow slice – of mountain terror. On reaching the end of it they’ll mumble “That’s quite enough of that sort of thing” and opt to stick to paths – nice wide, safe paths – from here on. But for some, Crib Goch is a gateway to harder routes, and as these thrill seekers trot along the rocky arête with grins so wide that it’s hard to tell whether it’s joy or insanity on their faces, they may spot their next fix rising perilously into the mountain ahead.
Clogwyn y Person Arête, also sometimes referred to as the Parson’s Nose Arête (and more about that ecclesiastic conk later) separates Cwm Glas and Cwm Uchaf. It climbs steeply – nearly 300m of vertical in just over 300m of horizontal – to the 1001m high point between Garnedd Ugain to the west and Crib Goch to the east. It’s a formidable sight, and as befits such a handsomely rugged crest of rock, it does not capitulate easily. I roped in north Wales-based Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor and long- time friend of Trail Rob Johnson to introduce me to the Parson.”
