East Ridge of Beinn a Chaorainn - Grade 1

This is a brilliant grade 1 winter mountaineering route that follows a lovely ridge line. I use it for teaching the techniques that we use in winter for travelling on winter ridges and it is ideal for this. The route has a pleasant walk in through pine forest and across open moorland before reaching the foot of the ridge itself. You can choose easier or more difficult options on the ridge to suit your mood and will find everything from snow gullies, mixed steps to the ridge crest itself. If visibility is poor then you need to be careful with your navigation off the top as a dog leg is required to find the descent ridge and avoid the steep cliffs on one side.
