Cneifion Arete, Cwm Cneifion, Snowdonia
Related Courses: Advanced Scrambling Course
This is probably my favourite Grade 3 scramble in Snowdonia. You can gain access to Cwm Cneifion in several different ways but one of my favourites is to warm up on the Idwal Staircase, a very pleasant grade 2 scramble up the side of the Idwal Slabs that ens at the foot of Seniors Ridge. You can then skip across Cwm Cneifion (also known as The Nameless Cwm) to the foot of the route.
The start of the ridge involves a couple of pitches of rock climbing at about Difficult. After that the ridge eases back and becomes a beautiful knife edge ridge remeniscent of those found in the Alps and you can move quickly on good holds. There are opportunities to take easier options but the best route takes the crest all the way to the top.
