The Grimselpass, Switzerland

I visited the Grimselpass in 2006 in search of multi pitch routes in an Alpine setting. A friend of mine had recommended it and I was not disappointed. It is often described as the Llanberis Pass of Switzerland and is situated in the Bernese Oberland. The climbing is on sweeping grantite slabs, often with bolt protection although the bolts are always well spaced to give adventurous sport climbing!

It takes a day or so to get your head into gear on the steep slabs with the climbing all very similar in nature. The Handegg area provides several cracking routes from 4 to 10 pitches from about VS 4c upwards. After that head round to Eldorado which is the mecca of granite slabs in Switzerland and climb one of the big routes there for a full day out. They start at about E1 5b and are all long.
