Mountain Leader Assessment
This five day course is for candidates who are ready to present themselves for assessment under the UK Mountain Leader Scheme. A great deal of emphasis is placed on your logbook and you should ensure that it is fully upto date including:
A record of your quality mountain days - see the MTUK website for the exact definition
A record of your training course
A record of your valid First Aid qualification - check with MTUK for validity
A minimum of 8 nights camping with 4 of them wild camping.
We aim to provide a supportive environment for you to pass your Mountain Leader Award and feel proud of your achievement. The week is based on the following schedule, this is subject to change to allow for the weather on the week.
Monday & Tuesday: Mountain days focusing on the key skills of navigation, security on steep ground and leadership skills including emergency use of the rope. Evening session review of the home paper.
Wednesday to Friday: A three day expedition camping overnight in the mountains where candidates are assessed on further navigation skills including two nights of night navigation, camp craft, emergency procedures, group leadership and further movement on steep ground if required.
The Friday afternoon will be spent on results and de-brief.
You should make sure that you are familiar with all areas of the syllabus before attending the assessment course.
Where is the course held?
We run the course in Snowdonia and use a variety of mountain locations throughout the week.
Who runs the course?
The course is directed by me, Rob Johnson and by my fellow instructor Huw Gilbert. We both hold the MIC and I also hold the IML qualification and we have many years of practical experience of working with a wide range of clients. During the week we can also offer advice and assitance in making a living as a self employed Mountain Leader and we are also assisted by other local Mountaineering Instructors throughout the week so that you get a balanced view and some different opinions. My practical experience on the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team also adds an additional element to the course. I am an approved provider through Mountain Training Cymru, provider number 1554. You can join our course in Wales whether you are registered with Mountain Training in England, Wales or Scotland. You can view my MT profile here.
"I was assessed by Trail Magazine regular Rob Johnson, assisted by his fellow MIC (top gong in the world of Mountain Training) Huw Gilbert. Rob comes highly recommended by both this title and his growing army of repeat customers. They were both objective assessors who knew their stuff."
Dan Aspel writing in Trail Magazines March 2015 edition.
The 5 consecutive days under assessment conditions in the mountains make for a physical week, especially with the expedition element where you will be carrying a heavy pack and could be out over night for 2 nights doing night navigation. You should be hill fit and able to operate within a comfort zone where your own fitness is not a limiting factor, the assessment concentrates on looking after others and your fitness should reflect this.
What about accommodation?
You will need to arrange your own transport and accommodation. The course will be based at Plas Curig Hostel in Capel Curig. Formerly a YHA the hostel is now a family run business that has been extensively refurbished in 2011. You can choose single or bunk rooms dependant upon budget and you can self cater or choose to eat in or at one of the nearby pubs. We do not get involved in organising accommodation and you are free to source alternatives if you prefer.
Most candidates benefit from some refresher training before assessment. Details of the course we offer are here.
If you have been deferred on a previous assessment course and would like to be re-assessed then visit this ink.

Just a quick note to say thanks for a great week, enjoyed your and Huws company as always.
Just had time to reflect on what was said and going into the week navigation and contour recognition was my weakness! And obviously showed.
Off to the lakes next week to do some practice.
The Ml inspires me to get into the hills, I just love being there, all be it when Iam struggling up the hill, note to self work on my fitness.
There will be the return of the Jedi, but this time using more than just the force!
See you in Jan, have a great Xmas and new year!

Hi Rob, I got the photo's you posted in drop box, cheers for that. I must say that I think you ran a great course.
