"Classic Rock" is a coffee table book written by climber and author Ken Wilson. It describes 80 of the finest lower grade rock climbs in Britain and is well known for its inspiration photographs. Many of the routes were established over 100 years ago and some of my favourite are found on the magical Isle of Skye. The routes are some of the most famous and sought after ticks of their grade and should be on all climbers tick lists.

This is a week long rock climbing trip and the idea is to spend each day climbing big multi pitch mountain routes from V Diff to Very Severe, or perhaps harder if you fancy it. We will also look at spending a day on the sea cliffs and bad weather days can be spent doing some of the classic scrambles on the Cuillin Ridge.

Routes that we could do include several up onto the Cioch, Integrity (my favourite Hard Severe in the World!) Shangri La VS4c, Spantastic at Flodigarry, Rib of Doom on Sron na Ciche, The Inaccessible Pinnacle and many, many more.

We recommend the Sligachan Hotel which has comfortable bunkhouse accommodation with open fire and self catering accommodation for £10 per night or Bed and Breakfast in the Hotel itself. The hotel is famous for its range of over 65 malt whiskies! More details can be found at www.sligachan.co.uk or you can call them on 01478 650204.

A History of Mountaineering on Skye
The formation of the Cuillin started 70 million years ago with a series of volcanic eruptions. The prevalent rock is Gabbro, a rough volcanic rock that destroys finger tips and provides fantastic friction for climbers boots. Also present was Basalt which weathers more easily and is more fragile than the Gabbro. The Basalt is easy to spot as it often forms in columns and staircases, it will be slippy when wet and tends not to provide good belays. Read More

Dates
We have found through personal experience that May, June and September are the best months to visit Skye as the midges tend not to be out and the days tend to be drier than the summer months. Visit the diary page for forthcoming trips.

"Just a note to say thanks a lot again for a cracking week of scrambling on Skye. Glad to have done the course and
learnt so many new skills.  Looking forward to going back to climbing wall tonight (now that the bruises are
subsiding!). All the best, Gaby" Skye Scrambling 2007

"Thanks again for a great week. With your tuition I do now feel empowered to be able to undertake pretty much any
scramble the UK can throw at me!" Alan Skye Scrambling 2007

"Thanks (again) for a really great trip. I had an excellent time throughout &
our day scrambling the Dubh slabs was a very special one for me. I also
enjoyed the TD gap although next time I will know what to expect & hopefully
cope with it more smoothly. Cheers and all the best. Mike" Skye Scrambling 2006

"Just a quick note to say many thanks for a great week. It was tremendous to gain the benefit of some of the vast experience yourself and Martin have. I found the course to have a great balance and to be fun (most of the time!). Hope to see you again sometime soon and the best of luck in September when you are back up there."
