Climbing Wall Award - Training - Course description

Who is the course suitable for?
This course is aims to address the technical skills and judgment required to safely supervise and coach people in an indoor or artificial environment which may include visiting an outdoor structure. Many climbers have their first taste of climbing via an indoor wall and walls provide a large number people with the main focus for their climbing. The role of the CWA holder is therefore an important one.
What are the course pre-requirements?
The MLTUK strictly requires that all students are registered prior to commencing the course. The Board will not recognise completion of the course by non-registered participants. Copies of “The CWA Handbook” are available from the MLTUK. Bring your logbook to the course fully completed with your experience. Before attending the training course you should have climbed on artificial structures on at least fifteen occasions, visited at least three different walls and have successfully led climbs on walls.
What is the course content?
This two day course is a combined CWA with additional Abseil module and will closely follow the syllabus of these schemes. It will looks at the practical techniques of group management and personal climbing skills required when leading and supervising groups in climbing walls and on artificial structures. The course will concentrate on areas that the board feels it is difficult for candidates to learn on their own.
The course will be based at Vertical Limit Climbing Wall in Worcester but will also visit The Warehouse Climbing Centre in Gloucester to allow for a variety of wall types and grades.

• Risk Assessment
• Group management
• Injury prevention warming up
• Bouldering warm up / games
• Practical use of the wall
• Equipment
• Analysing movement and coaching strategies for teaching basic movement skills
• Structuring sessions
• Short and long term climbing development
• Personal climbing / leading
• Artificial structures
• Top roping
• Abseiling
• Responsibilities and legal aspects
• Background information i.e: climbing wall development, competition climbing, the role of the BMC
