The Learning Process
- scrambling

Once you are considering moving onto grade 2 and 3 scrambles it can be really difficult to understand what it is you need to learn. I classify grade 2 and 3 scrambles as some of the most difficult ground to move safely on. For large parts of the day you will be rock climbing but with big boots and a rucksack on rather than rock shoes and no sack. You will also have to have an ability to interpret and manage risk so that you can decide when to move together or simply scramble unroped. The route finding will be more difficult than on most climbs and the day much longer. You will be in rock climbing terrain and will need to know how to escape if a problem arises.

Throughout the process you need to gain experience and therefore improve your own judgement. Mountaineering of this nature calls for a great deal of judgment and is far from black and white in the decision making process you will go through whilst ascending and descending routes of this nature.

With all of this in mind I have devised this goal setting chart. This will allow you to assess where you currently are and which course is right for you. I will chat through with you at the end of the first day where I think you are on the chart and we will see if the two match! We can then use the chart to set out our teaching plan for the remaining days of the course and for your own development after the course has finished.  Scroll down to start at the bottom and then work your way up to the top.
