Who is the Austrian Trekking Week trip suitable for?

The Austrian Alps are stunningly beautiful and surprisingly quiet in September when we run this trip. The summer holidays are long gone but the weather remains warm and stable for the most part and the first hint of autumn colours are starting to make an appearance. The mountain scenery is incredibly varied and the East Tirol region that we visit is home to Austrias largest National Park. We enjoy forests, lakes, waterfalls and of course high mountain scenery complete with some stunning glaciers and views of snow capped peaks.  This trip is suitable for any keen hillwalker who would like to bag some non-technical Alpine summits and high passes. If you have always fancied trekking 2500-3000m peaks that don’t require the use of axe, crampons or ropes then this is the trip for you.

The week will be trekking based, there will be no rope work, no scrambling and no snow or ice. You need a good level of fitness to be happy with an average of 1200m of ascent per day for five consecutive days.

The Programme:

We will meet on the Monday morning in the village of Matrei in Osttirol. We will then spend the week climbing some of the surrounding mountains – there are lots to choose from! We will enjoy 5 days fo trekking with the option of spending a night in a mountain hut. The exact program will be decided on a day by day basis to suit the weather and the group. There will be two leaders to provide maximum flexibility.

You can read our Blog from our 2018 trip to see the sort of thing that you might get up to, click here.

Leadership:

The trip will be lead by Rob Johnson and Sandy Paterson – both hold the International Mountain Leader qualification, as well as the MIC.
