Security on Steep Ground
A one day workshop looking at managing clients on grade 1 scrambling ground in the mountains of the UK.

Course base: Snowdonia
Ratios: 1:6
Cost: £60 per person for MTA members only

Who is the course suitable for?
This one day workshop is suitable for anyone who works with groups in the mountains of the UK. It is ideal for people preparing for an ML assessment or for ML holders who wish to improve/refresh their skills on this type of ground. You must be a member of the Mountain Training Association.

What does the course cover?
The Mountain Leader syllabus states that "Mountain Leaders should be familiar with techniques to ensure safe travel through steep and broken ground. This should be through a combination of planning, route choice and group management".
This one day course looks at this area of the syllabus, without the use of a rope. We will consider:

* Coaching our clients in movement skills to reduce the likelihood of a slip and to "empower" clients on steep and broken ground.
* Dynamic risk assessments on steep ground and how to involve our clients
* Route finding on steep and broken ground
* Balancing clients "wants" and "needs" on steep and broken ground
* Specialist equipment such as scrambling boots for us and our clients
* Working within the remit of the ML

We will typically use Grade 1 scrambling ground during the day and venues could include The North Ridge of Tryfan, Crib Goch, The Gribin Ridge or Cwm Idwal dependant upon the weather conditions on the day.

We may also be able to refresh the emergency use of the rope but this will not be the main focus of the day.

Who runs the course?
The course is directed by me, Rob Johnson. I hold the MIC and IML qualifications and have many years of practical experience of working with a wide range of clients. I specialise in running a wide range of scrambling and mountaineering courses. I am an approved provider of ML courses through Mountain Training Cymru.

Testimonials

Morning Rob,
Just a quick line to thank you for last week. I really enjoyed it and whilst it was a learning curve, it felt like a week on the hills with a few pals….. perfect!
Just so you know, I can now do a perfect overhand knot (practiced on Friday night!) and have bought a lime green Jet Boil and a scrambling book for the Dark Peak! Trangia, what trangia.
Have a good week and stay safe - Richard. ML Training April 2013
