Hi Rob
Just a quick note to thank you so much for organizing everything for us yesterday – we all had a great day, despite the terrible weather. Kurtis was fantastic and a great guide,he really looked after us well and was fun to be with – I hope he had a good day too.
We all definitely want to do some more mountaineering!! So will be in touch.
Thanks again
Jo - Climb Snowdon - May 09

Great two days, lots of fun and some truly awesome weather. I thoroughly enjoyed the two days and fully met my aims for the course. The course was well structured, building skills and confidence progressively. I found your teaching style supportive and lots fun, even in the worst of weather conditions. I'd strongly recommend this course for anyone who wants to enjoy the mountains confidently and safely.Carl - Navigation & Hill Skills November 08

Dear Rob
Many thanks for the Navigation Weekend
I learned a lot and had some necessary practice.
Thank you for your patience and enthusiasm.
I would recommend the course highly.

All the best, Gwen - Oct 08

Hi Rob,

A quick note to thank you for a truly great weekend. It was really enjoyable, and being able to put my navigation techniques to the test in such amazing scenery was a real bonus.
I saw your photos in the gallery - Sally looks a lot more at home in exposed positions than I ever will! I've uploaded my best photos to a picasa album here.

All the best, and I hope your scrambling course goes well this week.

Roddy - July 08

Hi Rob,
Just a quick note to say 'thanks for the brill w/e in Snowdonia on the Hill Skills course. I always think learning should be fun and enjoyable to be truly effective and you certainly achieved that on the course! Many thanks for the NNAS certificate, which I received at the end of last week; I look forward to putting it all into practice again in the very near future. I certainly intend to sign up for the Intro to Scrambling Course at some point, but as I'm off to work in Milan for 6-9 months very soon, I'm not sure when I will be able to do so. Still, I'm looking forward to some trekking in the Dolomites and maybe even do a couple of via ferratas as a warm up in the meantime.
Thanks again and best wishes for the future,
Regards Keith - April 08

Hi Rob - Thanks for the photos, we had a really excellent time and wish we were doing it all again this weekend. Howevere we are looking forward to trying out our new navigation skills in the Lakes tomorrow and Sunday! Thanks again, Sarah - Hill Skills & Navigation April 08

Hi Rob
I’ve only just got a chance to email you to thank you for a fantastic weekend in Snowdonia. It was good to learn from you and to have some company in the hills with like minded people. Although I think my tendency to drift off into a world of my own will be hard to overcome!

A very nice friend has actually bought me membership of the BMC and registration on the Mountain Leader scheme. So it looks like I’m doing the Mountain Leader training, which means more lovely weekends in Snowdonia and hopefully Scotland!!!

Anyway hope to see you again. Take care
Laura - Hill Skills April 08

Hi Rob - Just wanted to let you know that we are not in fact still wandering around, scratching our heads, in Snowdonia so you must have done a good job. We had a lovely day and almost didn't get wet. The ascent was interesting to navigate and beautiful, we'll do something more difficult next time. Thanks for a fun and very useful weekend. Regards, Joanna - Hill Skills July 2007

"Just a quick note to than you for your time and expertise in teaching me this weekend, I feel that I have gained a lot of valuable skills that I shall be reflecting upon in time to come...I look forward to booking futures courses with you." Tony - Oct 04

"Just a quick mail to say thanks for the ace time I had on the Hill Skills course back in October. A long time to get a response I know, but I have only just dryed out!
Since then I have had fun getting my family lost, and boring everyone at work with my contouring technique around the desktops! It has inspired me to get out on the hills a lot more, in fact I'll be back in Snowdonia this coming weekend trying out the Glyders! Who knows, this year maybe a scrambling course? Hope the business is thriving - onwards and upwards!"

Climb Snowdon - Guided mountain walks on Snowdon

Snowdon is the highest mountain in England and Wales and stands at 1085m. Its height and beauty make it a sought after peak and there are many reasons that you may wish to engage the services of a mountain guide or instructor to reach its summit. I can assist with guiding celebrities (follow link for pictures of Barry McGuigan playing piano near the summit), television crews, charity challenge events, family days out or individuals who want the peace of mind of a professionally qualified local instructor.

Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon
North Wales is a land of mountains, rivers, lakes and crags and within it the old kingdom of Gwynedd is the jewel in the crown, known in Welsh as Eryri and in English as Snowdonia. The Snowdonia national park has 15 mountains that sit over 3000 feet and Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa meaning burial mound in Welsh) sits as the chieftan of them all.

The mountain was originally formed over 450 million years ago through tectonic plate collision and then formed into the shape that we recognise today through a series of ice ages, the most recent one being just 10 000 years ago.

Mountaineering has been a fairly recent pursuit but Snowdon has been at the heart of British development of the way of life that many of us enjoy. The mountain has long been a training ground for expeditions to the Alps and the Himalaya and the PYG Hotel at the foot of the mountain was the base for the 1953 Everest expedition whilst training for their successful summit attempt.

My experience & qualifications
I am a professionally qualified Mountaineering Instructor (read what the entails here) and a member of the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team. I am on Snowdon most weeks of the year either for work, play or in a rescue capacity. I am a keen rock climber and mountaineer and you can browse the gallery section of this website to see some of the many beautiful places I have climbed.

The Routes to the Summit
There are 7 main routes to the summit of Snowdon, each offering their own unique challenges and charms. We tend to use one of the following when guiding groups:

The Llanberis Path: The path starts in the village of Llanberis and winds its way up the North West flank of the mountain. The day involves over 800m of ascent and close to 12km of walking but in summer conditions poses few technical difficulties.

The Pyg Track & Miners Track: We often use these paths in combination since they start and finish in the same place. The car park at Pen Y Pass offers a high starting point at 359m and so reduces the height gain to a little over 700m. The distance covered is also reduced to closer to 9km of walking but the ground is more awkward than that found on the Llanberis Path with some steeper sections.

Either of these options can be done in a days walk. We normally meet at 9:30am and finish at about 5:00pm. The cost is £30 per person for group bookings of 5 people or more. If you have a smaller group please email for a quote.

Crib Goch and the Snowdon Horseshoe: The Snowdon horseshoe comprises Crib Goch, Crib y Ddysgl, Snowdon and Lliwedd in one full day out. The route is deservedly famous as a mountaineering route of Alpine proportions and offers fantastic scrambling with beautiful views and incredible exposure. Much of the day is spent on knife edge ridges where you need previous experience of grade 1 scrambles, a good head for heights and good footwork. Due to the serious nature of the ground (several people are killed each year falling off) we will not guide Crib Goch unless you have spent a day out with us previously and even then we will only work at a ratio of 1 instructor to 3 clients. It is best avoided at weekends and on bank holidays since the route is very popular. These days are arranged on a private guiding basis - click here for details.

Winter Ascents: If you have previous experience of using ice axe and crampons (see here for courses we offer) then winter ascents of Snowdon can make fine winter mountaineering or climbing objectives. Winter conditions can occur any time from October through to April and then ice axe, crampons and the skills to use them are essential for safe travel. These days are arranged on a private guiding basis - click here for details.

Rock Climbing Routes:
Some of my favourite ways of reaching the summit of Snowdon in summer are by linking big long multi pitch rock climbs and grade 2/3 scrambles with some of the more well known easier scrambling routes to create an Alpine style big rock day. Email me to discuss ideas and aspirations.

What about accommodation?
We do not include accommodation with this course. For a variety of different accommodation options in Snowdonia, from camping to nice hotels, visit this link.

Prices:
The cost is £30 per person for summer walks with a minimum fee of 5 people. (Less people can attend but the fee will be higher per person)

For other seasons and routes please email for a quote.
