Hi Rob, A quick note to say thanks once more for an awesome couple of days scrambling. Great routes, and the difficulty pitched just right for me and Sean - quite challenging at times, but not scary. As well as having a blast I felt I learned masses about actual real-world scrambling practice. So much so that I'd have no hesitation in going out and hitting a grade 2 now, with a view to progressing on to a 3 in the near future, and there's no way I could have said that 3 days ago. The most valuable thing of all was being able to talk over the process of assessing risk while you're actually there on the rock, and then arranging protection accordingly - it must seem like child's play to you but for where I am now it's the clincher. You're an excellent teacher, and I felt supported at all times but never patronised. All in all a brilliant course - I'll be back! Cheers Robin - Advanced scrambling June 2010
Mick was right when he said, You know when you have had a good time when you wake up the next day and are still smiling!
Still smiling now.
Cheers for a memorable week, each day had special moments that will last in my head for sometime. Special thanks to Rob & Sandy for keeping us safe all week. ;-) Gez - Skye Scrambling May 2010
Hi Rob, thankyou for a brilliant day on saturday - I got out of it exactly what I
was hoping for. I just needed that bit of guiding advice alongside me on a
VS climb just to boost my confidence and you provided that in bucket fulls!
So much so, that yesterday I was able to get out on the slate and lead
Seamstress (VS 4c) at Serengeti - I had a bit of disco leg but I put
everything into play from saturday and got up in good style. So heres to
more VS leading!! The blog looks good - it actually looks from the photos as if I know what
I'm doing!!!! Again, many thanks - you've been a tremendous help. Jason Private Guiding May 2010
Hi Rob, many thanks for an excellent 3 days and another very enjoyable course under your expert guidance.
I appreciated your leadership and patience particularly the latter as a novice scrambler!!
I would definitely recommend the course to anyone wishing to experience scrambling for the first time, as you have bulit up my confidence to tackle some routes which previously I may have avoided.
I shall look forward to joining you on another course in 2010....
Regards

Hi Rob,
I just wanted to say thank you for a fabulous couple of days scrambling the other week...the routes were incredible. Finding myself on the Cneifion Arete was terrific...I remember walking past it only last October and thinking, 'that's a scramble?!!' and here I was on the route, loving every minute.
Your instruction was great as ever and I look forward to finding some free time again soon so I can book up another course with you. Thanks again, Shae. Advanced Scrambling April 2010
Hi Rob, I thought you might like some feedback on the Hill Skills and Navigation course now that I've found some free time to put something together.
In a word - 'brilliant'. I learnt so much over the two days and it has really whetted my appetite to do more and get further qualified. Rhian was first class form beginning to end. Her professionalism, experience, dedication and enthusiasm shone through - and was quite infectious! Even within 30 minutes of leaving our start point on day one, members of the group were remarking to each other about the little tips and skills that had already been picked up. Rhian's style was perfect for the group - relaxed, fun and informative; she was also well aware of when group members were struggling with the pace or needed a little one on one to explain certain navigation techniques - which she always took time to do. The course was rounded off by the group's joint sense of achievement after having scaled Tryfan and navigated our way down using the various techniques we'd all learnt. It was 3 days before my 'buzz' from the weekend finally subsided!
I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who wants to get more from the fabulous UK countryside and those who want to better themselves by picking up life-long navigation skills which can be used anywhere.
Thanks again - and I'm already seriously considering subscribing to the 5 day course. I might be in touch soon!
Best regards

Hi Rob,
Just a quick note to say thanks for the photos. I look a bit worried in
some of them! We had a great time and everyone (even me) agreed that our
second day of climbing was the best day of the holiday. I would even go
and do it again- it's surprising how time and distance blur your memory.
John and I were saying that there is no way that we would want to take
responsibility for someone elses children the way you do. It's a
testament to how good you are at your job that although I felt pretty
scared at times I always had complete trust in your ability to look
after my children, thanks again for a great time.
Best wishes,

Hi Rob,
Just wanted to email to say how much we enjoyed our day with you on Friday. Although the weather meant we had to change our original plans, (winter) climbing a gully was an unexpected bonus! I feel more confident now to have a go at some of the rope skills we used if needed, when Chris and I are next out and about.
We are both looking forward to booking some more time with you in the near future - perhaps we'll manage some scrambling next time?!!
Best Wishes,

Hi Rob -
Many thanks for an excellent course on Navigation and Hill Skills which I would recommend to anyone wishing to improve their navigation skills. I did sometimes think that I was on the Winter Skills course with the depth of snow and wintry conditions , but it was great and I really enjoyed it!! Thanks to you and Jim for a great time. I am just looking at your brochure re the 5 day course 10-14 May, the questions are can I persuade my 'better half' to let me loose again and can I scramble!!!?
Best Wishes

Rob,
I thought that after my 4th fantastic course that it was high time that I join the ranks of satisfied punters and send you a note of formal thanks…..
Firstly, I must say that you make what can be sometimes be a daunting prospect (for example learning to climb for the 1st time) both very enjoyable and on contemplation seem like “a walk in the park”.
It has been a real joy and education to benefit from your relaxed but innately observant tuition.
With your guidance it has really empowered me to strike out safely into new areas of mountains and hills with a new found confidence that I would have never of thought possible.
Anyone wanting to learn new skills or develop their existing ones simply couldn’t do any better but benefit from some of your expertise and guidance.
-Looking forward to seeing you in the Cuillins in May!
All the best -

Hi Rob.
I hope you and your family are well.
Just a very brief message to thank you for a most spectacular week in the mountains ( again!! ). That hot-line you have to the weather gods really works, for us at least.
Also a massive thanks for the dvd of pictures, they really are fantastic. If I can figure out how to, I will attempt to foward some of mine on.
I can't tell you how rewarding the two courses have been not only for experience and confidence building for "getting out there" but also for my own well-being.
So thank you again - I would not hesitate in booking further courses or holidays with you.
Sincerely
Ed - Winter Skills 5 day Jan 2010
HI Rob,
thank you so much for what was probably the most exciting two days of our lives (so far!) Now we are bitten by the scrambling bug, we shall return. Be in touch in the Spring, but until then, take care of yourself and our very best wishes to Mrs J. and the family, and of course, to little Skye.
Thanks again Sam and Heidi x

Hi Rob,
I am just dropping you a line following our " Learn to Lead" course in September. Stu and Myself are still grinning from our week climbing in North Wales. Your Instruction was second to none, absolutely what we required, you pitched the course to our ability, which was better than we thought surprisingly ! This allowed us to stretch ourselves safely under your expert guidance and coaching. We learnt loads in a week, all of which was paced skilfully allowing us to build on new skills before we moved on. Your local knowledge in picking areas and routes, was also invaluable. Just to round up excellent week, excellent instruction, Thanks:-)
I will be taking up your professional skills again in the near future, definitely.
Kind Regards
Jason & Stuart - 5 day learn to lead Sept 2009.
Hi Rob -
Just to say thank you for a great day last weekend. Despite the weather we all enjoyed it. I must say it was a totally new experience for some of us in the group but you can safely say that you made our introduction to scrambling fun and very enjoyable. We will definitely do it again. Being together as a family in challenging weather conditions and in such a fantastic environment was a truly exhilarating time.
Kevin would also add that it was far more preferable than a shopping centre.
Kind Regards

Alright rob - -just wanted to drop you a line to thank you for a great course last 2 days.I appreciate your patience for answering all my questions and putting up with the constant chit chat - i hope you dont have too much of a headache!
was gutted to have to leave snowdonia last night for the 5 hour trek back to suburban boredom! work nice and quiet so far today so been online researching ropes, gear and a knot book( which i need!!!!) so i can get up there on my own and start to tick off the routes from the guide.
i have got the bug for it now in a big way, and plan on training hard to get my fitness and experience to a level so i can do the matterhorn in the next 2 years or so - i am sure you will be seeing me again when i am ready to make that next step.
thanks again, and enjoy your alps trip you lucky boy, and good luck with all the dog training and nappy changing!!

"I wanted to say thanks for another fantastic week, I like it when an instructor pushes his clients to new things if and when they are ready and the sea cliffs rocked including the brazen elements and trumping fog-horn! I have had my chums in stitches regaling that tale already! I will also be checking the Forum on your site anon, as you recommended, to try and see if I can get out and about with others in the coming months. Awesome to have your guidance as always and I hope you enjoyed the Whisky. Mike - 5 day learn to lead Aug 09
"On behalf of both Charl and I… We just wanted to say thank you very much for the 3 days we had scrambling & climbing.
Far exceeded both our expectations..!! Learnt so much, had loads of fun and lucky with the weather. Top banana..!!!
Your enthusiasm, passion for the job and high levels of professionalism all being fantastic attributes – all providing a much enjoyable and safe environment.
Lots to now put into practise and develop further. “New Boots & Panties” today…. “El Capitan” tomorrow (you have to have goals in life – yeah right…)
Two clients who will for sure be returning.
See you in the winter months (maybe for a rope skills/problem solving session?)
Take care.
Cheers!!!

"I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for last week – it was awesome and just what I needed. Being able to be taught the essential building blocks and develop from there through the week is important because of the confidence it gives you to go off on your own steam. "Just wanted to drop you a line to say thanks for the training on navigation and scrambling. You have given me confidence that I have the skills to navigate in the hills and I must keep practising it to be confident in poor visibility. Scrambling adds another dimension. I walked up Tryfan again last Saturday had a great view of a ring ouzel, photo enclosed. It is - honest.
Thanks again Rob and hope all goes well for the birth of the 4th addition to your family.
Kind regards

"Just excellent. Rob is not only a nice guy and a fine teacher, but he
has a deep well of patience.
On a two day navigation course he took
three people with completely different levels of
knowledge and skill
at the start – from complete beginner to tolerably competent – and,
within their capabilities, got each of them to where they wanted to
be. There may be more intensive navigation courses than Rob offers,
but I doubt there are more effective ones. It was also a lot of fun.
Highly recommended."

A great day had by us both, good skills learnt and put into action on the following morning as we ascended Tryfan ourselves. Was wonderful to have the confidence to leave the well trodden paths and climb our own way to the summit. Most satisfying! Thanks again and already thinking about our next visit. Rob,
Thanks for 3 great days. I really enjoyed the way you managed to get a great balance between breadth and depth in what we covered. Yesterday was an absolute belter and I loved the session we did on the ice and snow. My quads feel like they have been attacked with a hammer from all of the crampon work and I will need a good run tonight to get them working again! I will definitely be doing some more with you next year so please keep me on your mailing list.
Thanks

Hi Rob - Just wanted to say thanks for a great weekend! We both really enjoyed it and learned a great deal indeed. You are a very patient and knowledgeable teacher and obviously enjoy what you do - well why wouldn't you! It was a very long drive back on Sunday (and Monday) and I am covered head to toe in bruises - but it was still excellent! Thanks once again and we will definitely be joining you again at some point!

Rob - I had a fabulous time on Tuesday and Wednesday, I think you got the level and pace exactly right and I enjoyed the very focused delivery with your friendly and approachable style. So given that I’ll be in touch about doing some more stuff with you as you’re nice and local and I’m convinced you could make me into a better mountaineer and climber (although if we go up slippy stuff again I may wear different boots )!

Great two days, lots of fun and some truly awesome weather. I thoroughly enjoyed the two days and fully met my aims for the course. The course was well structured, building skills and confidence progressively. I found your teaching style supportive and lots fun, even in the worst of weather conditions. I'd strongly recommend this course for anyone who wants to enjoy the mountains confidently and safely.Carl - Navigation & Hill Skills November 08

I did a winter skills course with Rob earlier this year in Fort William, he certainly knows his stuff and is a top bloke and very good teacher.

I've done ML training at PYB and done weekend courses with Rob Johnson. Both seemed very good value to me. With Rob you get a lot of 1:1 or 1:2 tuition which means you can learn a lot in a short time. Also can endorse tryfans comment about Rob being a good teacher and a top bloke.

Hi Rob, Thanks so much for the weekend of scrambling, we all thoroughly enjoyed it,
and I'm sure we'll soon be back there doing it for ourselves. I was telling an RSPB friend about the weekend's exploits & he thought it
sounded so good that he might like to do a similar thing. Please could you
send him a brochure.Enjoy your well-earned break this week,

Hi Rob,Thank you again for making it a great week on Classic Rock, and for managing to arrange a full week's climbing despite the weather! I will certainly be recommending you to friends, and also hope to join you on another course soon. I really enjoyed the climbing on all 5 days. I also enjoyed the company, experienced new activities such as bouldering and sea cliff climbing, learnt a few things, and I think improved my climbing a bit, too. Hope the Alps trek is a big success. Probably be in contact before too long about something in Scotland this winter, and maybe some nav. Also thinking I might return on Classic Rock next year to tick the rest off - hopefully I'll be climbing VS by then.Best wishes, Mark. Classic Rock - July/Aug 08
Hi Rob - I have been meaning to write for weeks now – to say a massive thank you for all your help, expertise and patience on the Learn to Lead course – and for keeping us happy on those slightly damp days! I have managed to get out climbing at least twice a week since so lots of putting everything into practice which has been great, and not a climb goes by without me remembering and using any number of the things you taught us! It has made a huge difference being able to set up my own belays and I think (though it sometimes doesn’t feel it half way up!) that my confidence in leading is slowly growing.
So many thanks again and I hope to get back to do another course some day.
Hope all is well with you. Kind regards

Hi Rob,This is just a quick note from Alice and Matt (from the intro to climbing 5/6th July) to thank you once again for a brilliant course. We enjoyed it so much that as soon as we got back to London, we signed up at the local bouldering wall in London Bridge and now have the bruises to prove it. Hopefully we'll be back on 'real' rock faces soon! (I'm sure you'll get a call when we need a bit more help as well)I've included some pictures of Borthwen beach near Rhoscolyn, which you suggested to go and take a look at, and also a nice picture of where we went climbing on the second day.Hope you are well and that your family are settling in well in their new home Best wishes Alice & Matt - Intro to Climbing July 08

Hi Rob,
Just a quick note to say 'thanks for the brill w/e in Snowdonia on the Hill Skills course. I always think learning should be fun and enjoyable to be truly effective and you certainly achieved that on the course!
Many thanks for the NNAS certificate, which I received at the end of last week; I look forward to putting it all into practice again in the very near future. I certainly intend to sign up for the Intro to Scrambling Course at some point, but as I'm off to work in Milan for 6-9 months very soon, I'm not sure when I will be able to do so. Still, I'm looking forward to some trekking in the Dolomites and maybe even do a couple of via ferratas as a warm up in the meantime.

Hi Rob
I’ve only just got a chance to email you to thank you for a fantastic weekend in Snowdonia. It was good to learn from you and to have some company in the hills with like minded people. Although I think my tendency to drift off into a world of my own will be hard to overcome!
A very nice friend has actually bought me membership of the BMC and registration on the Mountain Leader scheme. So it looks like I’m doing the Mountain Leader training, which means more lovely weekends in Snowdonia and hopefully Scotland!!!
Anyway hope to see you again.

Rob hi, Sam and I received the CD with the pictures of the winter skills weekend
this morning and I just wanted to write to let you know what a wonderful
time we had. The instruction was first class, the setting was amazing
and we had a great time and had our aspirations totally met and
exceeded. I'm still assimilating the information passed on by yourself
and have found a new confidence to be able to look up at the winter
hills and not feel like its beyond us now. I also felt that we came
away having gained not just the skills but some new friends which is
always a huge bonus. In addition to all this we'd like to undertake the intro to scrambling
course with yourself. Thanks once more. Nik and Sam Winter Skills 2008

Hi Rob,
Back at work today (uhh!). Just wanted to say thank you for the last two days advanced scrambling in Snowdonia. Clogwyn-y-person Arete will stay with me forever and I have a permanent grin on my face reliving the memories of the two days and what I achieved thanks to your guidance and expertise. Dear Rob,
I just wanted to say thanks for a great four days in Wales. As usual the
standard of instruction, choice of venues and routes were superb.
I am constantly impressed by your professionalism and apparent ability
to deal with anything nature throws at you. This is borne out by the fact
that despite being lashed by wind and rain on the top of Glydr Fawr and
descending something akin to a waterfall, all three of us left the hill with
a smile on our faces! Well done! Thanks again - Mark - Multi Pitch Climbing & Advanced Scrambling Sept 07

Hope your well first off thanks for an excellent week trekking we both
really enjoyed the experience and it has given us lots of ideas for future
holidays. Everything from your guiding to the places we stayed and
visited were superb. The night in the hut was something to remember and
hopefully repeat. We found a nice restaurant in Zermatt just behind the
hotel called Chez Gaby give it a try next time your there. We are looking at
taking a break in Snowdonia next April and I can take two days to fit in the

"Just
wanted to say thank you for a great winter skills week! I felt I learnt a great
deal about the skills required to place myself in a winter environment in
the mountains. This course was a perfect introduction before completing my
first mountaineering trip to the Alps this
summer. I would strongly recommend this course to anybody in a similar
situation. The course was tailored to compensate for the members current
knowledge, fitness and experience so the week was always geared to be
learning new skills. A big thanks, keep in touch and look forward to

"Rob,I just wanted to say thinks for your time during the Winter Skills
course that recently we took with you. It went about as perfectly as we
could have wished. I particularly liked the way that you took us through a
range of learning in a very practical way, everything from diet through to a
gradual and progressive development of technical skills, often without us
actually realising how much we had learned until we practised again the
following day. And of course, it was fun as well.We are now thinking about
next steps and of course, how we engage you further. Thanks again and all the
very best" Graham winter skills Feb 07
Hi Rob - I just arrived home, and after the compulsory bragging and
exaggerating to Teresa, I wanted to write and thank you for the
wonderful experiences this week. There were some wonderful highlights,
not least of which was the delight I felt at finishing Great Western,
Dinas Mott at your encouragement. All week I felt totally safe, and confident in your abilities to guide
and protect me, thank you so very much.
Thanks Rob, for everything.
Best regards

"Thanks (again) for a really great trip. I had an excellent time
throughout and our day scrambling the Dubh slabs was a very special one
for me. I also enjoyed the TD Gap although next time I will know what to
expect and hopefully cope with it more smoothly! Cheers and all the best

"Just a quick note to say many thanks for a great week. It was tremendous to gain the benefit of some of the vast experience yourself and Martin have. I found the course to have a great balance and to be fun (most of the time!). Hope to see you again sometime soon and the best of luck in September when you are back up
there." Skye Ridge Traverse Course May 2005
Just writing to say thanks for a couple of amazing days in the
mountains, the course far exceeded my expectations and took me way out of
my normal comfort zone and what I though I was capable of. I enjoyed your instruction and interesting facts about
the mountains and despite a couple "wobbly" moments always felt
I was in safe hands.Traversing onto and then climbing up the face of
the Dolmen buttress are moments that will stay with me for a quite a
while ! brilliant ! How my legs kept going on Friday I'm not
sure, will power and adrenaline I think, I'm VERY sore today and
wishing I lived in a bungalow !
Thanks again Cheers Paul – Grade 2 and 3 scrambles - Advanced scrambling course October

"Just
a quick note to say a big thank you for the weekend. So many
memories, I'm finding it hard to concentrate at work today. The
scrambling was excellent, the snow an added bonus and I'm now totally
hooked. You may make a mountaineer out of me yet!" Mandy April 06 Intro to scrambling

"I just wanted to write and express my thanks for a great trip to La Grave. My first time climbing in the Alps was a little daunting, knowing that I would be trying my hand at quite a few things I’ve never tried before, but you guys really inspired confidence. Looking back at the photo’s it was just an amazing experience and climbing icefalls where you can see and hear the water running behind the ice while your several hundred metres up is something I know I’ll never forget.
I would certainly recommend your services!"

"Hi Rob. Just a quick line to say thanks for a cracking couple of days.It was exactly what we needed - great instruction and great fun (which is something coming from somebody who has never seen any attraction in rock climbing - it's for nutters isn't it?) Intro to climbing I hope to be back for more in the future." Jeff - May 05

"Just a quick note to than you for your time and expertise in teaching me this weekend, I feel that I have gained a lot of valuable skills that I shall be reflecting upon in time to come...I look forward to booking futures courses with you." Tony - Oct 04 Hill Skills Course
"Just a quick mail to say thanks for the
ace time I had on the Hill Skills course back in October. A long time to
get a response I know, but I have only just dryed out!Since then I have had fun getting my family lost, and boring everyone at
work with my contouring technique around the desktops! It has inspired me
to get out on the hills a lot more, in fact I'll be back in Snowdonia this
coming weekend trying out the Glyders! Who knows, this year maybe a
scrambling course? Hope the business is thriving - onwards and
upwards!" Hill Skills Course |
