The lack of ice at lower elevations might have removed some of our favourite choices but one new opportunity was the option to visit the higher level crag at Gausta. It’s a 45 minute snow shoe approach walk which would naturally mean you’d need a good reason to visit when many other venues are a mere 5 mins from the car. It proved a good, if cold, crag to climb at when we visited it on Thursday though. Almost all of the lines there are steep and we benefited hugely in sharing ropes with the two teams who were already there (Thanks Stu Lade!) which allowed the whole team to get climbing quickly in an effort to ward off the cold. Today was another cold morning with -11 OC showing on the thermometer at Krokan. The hard and brittle ice made some slightly unnerving booms and groans but with a little care and more judicious use of top ropes we enjoyed another great day of climbing to end our trip to Rjukan.
