Ml Refresher – Navigation Day

Tony, Jason and I have been up into Cwm Tregallan on Snowdon today looking at micro navigation skills as the final day of our ML Refresher. With Tony booked onto an assessment next week I felt a massive responsibility to provide opportunities for practise and fine tuning without trying to dramatically change anything in a [...]

Security on steep ground on Tryfan

Tony, Jason and I have been out again today for the second day of our ML Refresher and have been looking at security on steep ground without the use of the rope. Our chosen playground was the East Face of Tryfan, via Little & North Gullies. We looked at leadership skills, movement skills, client coaching, [...]

ML Refresher

I have been joined by Jason and Tony for a Mountain Leader refresher course here in Snowdonia. We kicked the week off looking at emergency use of the rope for security on steep ground today in Cwm Idwal, throwing in plenty of environmental and leadership knowledge for good measure and sheltering from the high winds [...]

Cneifion Arete with Julia & Lucy

I have been out with Julia and her daughter today for some private guiding here in Snowdonia. I don't remember tieing in with a mother and daughter before (thats not to say it hasn't happened!) and we had a lovely day cruising up Idwal Buttress and the Cneifion Arete in nice dry, cool conditions. The [...]

Nor Nor Buttress Scramble

Julia, Richard and I have been spoilt again today with wonderful blue skies, warm rock and a nice breeze to keep the midges at bay. We headed up onto the East Face of Tryfan and climbed Nor Nor Buttress Scramble (3+) before blasting up the last of the North Ridge to the summit. No swim [...]

Scrambling & Swimming in the sunshine

I have been joined by Julia and Richard for our advanced scrambling course here in Snowdonia. Regular readers will recognise both faces but Julia in particular has shared many adventures with us and is often lucky with the weather - and today was no exception. We scrambled up the East Ridge of Y Garn (2) [...]

Intro to Scrambling

I have been out with Judith, Sue, Charlotte and Patrick today, introducing them to grade 1 scrambling here in Snowdonia. We stayed low in some poor weather and focused on plenty of movement coaching, line choice, risk assessment and route finding with plenty of smiles despite the rain!

Snowdonia Mountaineering

I have been out with Kate and John today who are with us for a week of mountaineering here in Snowdonia. We decided to move up the grade and started off with Idwal Buttress (2) before continuing up onto the Cneifion Arete (3). It was warm and dry but not too hot so perfect for [...]

Mountain Biking on Snowdon

I have never ridden up Snowdon before. I have walked it, climbed it and skied it so I thought it was about time I rode it! During the summer months there is a voluntary restriction on not riding the bridleways between 10:00am and 5:00pm and so the summer solstice offers the ideal opportunity to ride [...]

Mountain Filming

I kicked this week off filming for a mountain project with Helix Tactical, often referred to as the war office of DMM. We spent a couple of days high on the Clogwyn Y Person Arete which is always a nice place to be. You will be able to catch the film here in the next [...]

North Ridge of Tryfan

Well the much threatened rain finally arrived today and so Bob and I had a change of pace and grade and headed up the classic scramble that is the North Ridge of Tryfan. This allowed us to keep moving in the wet weather and although the rain was never as heavy as the forecast had [...]

Cwm Idwal Scrambling

Bob and I headed into Cwm Idwal today expecting a day of heavy rain. To our pleasant surprise it stayed dry all day and we romped up North West Face Route on the Slabs, The Cneifion Arete (where we bumped into Huw), the Gribin Ridge over Glyder Fawr and then down the Devils Kitchen. And [...]

Clogwyn Y Person Arete & Crib Goch

I have been joined this week by Bob who regular blog readers will surely recognise. Bob and I have been sharing adventures for a few years now and its always fun to be out in the mountains with him. With the weather today looking the best day of the week we made the most of [...]

ML Refresher Day Three

It has been another wet one here in Snowdonia today and Graham, Jonathan and I made the most of the limited visibility by practising some micro navigation this morning. We then used steep ground in Cwm Idwal to go through the emergency ropework elements of the steep ground syllabus.

ML Refresher – Steep Ground

Jonathan, Graham and I have switched into steep ground mode today on the ML refresher course. Our venue of choice was Little & North Gullies on Tryfan for the ascent and then West Gully in descent. We looked at movement coaching, risk assessments, spotting and an overview of the emergency use of the rope which [...]

Mountain Leader Refresher

I have been joined by Graham and Jonathan for a three day Mountain Leader Refresher here in Snowdonia. We chatted through changes in the scheme since Grahams training course in 1987 and then headed out for a Quality Mountain Day. Starting in the Ogwen Valley we did some off the path navigation up onto Elidir [...]

Thank You

Hi Rob, Thanks so much to you, Huw, David and Sandy for another awesome week of scrambling on Skye.  I’m delighted to have ticked off a handful more of the Cuillin highlights this week. Not only was it a jam packed, fun filled five days but it was also so very educational. Who’d have thought [...]

Sgurr Alasdair

With greasy conditions on the ridge today we chose to head up Sgurr Alasdair via the South-West Ridge (3). The route starts at Bealach Sgumain via a lovely walk into Coire a' Ghrunnda which gives some lovely views across to Rum. A bad step is avoided by a chimney to the right of the Bealach [...]

Clach Glas Blabheinn Traverse

This is probably one of my favourite days out in the mountains of the UK and so when Steven and Claire said it was on their "must do" list for this trip it was a no brainer for today. The weather has been wonderful, blue skies, sunshine and a cooling breeze. The views from the [...]

Pinnacle Ridge, Sgurr nan Gillean

Pinnacle Ridge was high on the wish list for Claire and Steven this week so we bagged it today, making the most of a good forecast. Its always a cracking route with enough technical difficulty to remain interesting from bottom to top and some steep descents along the way too, one of which gives an [...]
