We tailor each course to suit the group’s skills and aspirations, ensuring a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

🧭 What You’ll Learn

Over five days, you’ll gain essential mountain skills through real-world experience:

Navigation Skills (Days 1–3)

  • Route planning with maps, guidebooks, and apps

  • Understanding map scales, contours, and symbols

  • Setting and using a compass

  • Navigating on and off paths

  • Estimating distance with pacing and timing

  • Navigating in poor visibility

  • Emergency procedures and reorientation techniques

  • Using digital mapping tools (OS Maps, GPS, satellite comms)

  • Environmental awareness and responsible travel

Scrambling Skills (Days 4–5)

  • Introduction to Grade 1 scrambling terrain

  • Reading scrambling guidebooks

  • Movement techniques on ridges, gullies, and steeper ground

  • Tackling some of Snowdonia’s best Grade 1 scrambles safely

🏅 MTUKI Mountain Skills Certification

This course includes the Mountain Training UK Mountain Skills Award, ideal for walkers transitioning from countryside trails to mountainous terrain.

Meet Your Instructors

Courses are led by myself and Huw — both holders of the WMCI qualification, the highest instructional award in the UK. With decades of combined experience and my background in the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, we bring practical insight, safety expertise, and a passion for teaching.
