Who Is This Course For?

This course is ideal for:

  • Climbers with basic indoor experience

  • Those new to outdoor climbing

  • Anyone looking to learn trad climbing techniques and lead their own multi-pitch routes

Whether you’re just starting out or have some experience, our 1:2 ratio ensures personalized instruction tailored to your skill level and goals.

 

What You’ll Learn

We use a progressive teaching model focused on practical experience. Each day builds your confidence and skills through real climbing scenarios.

Days 1–2: Foundation Skills

  • Belaying from above and below

  • Movement techniques on rock

  • Tying into harnesses and anchors

  • Abseiling and crag safety

  • Route finding and crag etiquette

Days 3–5: Multi-Pitch Classics

  • Climbing iconic multi-pitch routes in Snowdonia

  • Placing trad protection: nuts, wires, cams, hexes, slings

  • Stance management and ropework

  • Abseil retreat techniques

  • Leading climbs graded Difficult to Hard Very Severe, based on your ability and aspirations

Course Location

We run the course across a variety of single and multi-pitch crags in Snowdonia, chosen based on weather and group needs. Snowdonia offers:

  • Roadside crags for easy access

  • Long mountain routes for full-day adventures

  • Sheltered venues suitable for year-round climbing, including the North Wales coastline

 

What’s Included

  • Five days of expert instruction

  • Use of specialist equipment: ropes, harnesses, helmets, climbing rack

  • Detailed kit list provided upon booking

You’re welcome to bring your own gear if preferred.

 

Accommodation & Transport

Accommodation is not included, allowing you to choose lodging that suits your budget. Snowdonia offers options from campsites to boutique hotels.

Courses are led by Rob Johnson, holder of the WMCI and IML qualifications, with nearly 20 years of climbing experience. Rob is supported by trusted local Mountaineering Instructors, ensuring a well-rounded and professional learning environment.

Courses begin at 9:00 AM in the Ogwen Valley and finish around 4:00 PM daily.

This was the obvious choice having recently completed the multi-pitch course with Rob. The course took me from a competent second to leading routes with confidence. We covered: movement; route choice; guide book interpretation; self and second rescue techniques; equipment and how/when to place it; and so much more. Rob’s delivery was perfect – he selected locations and routes that allowed for inclement weather and saw both clients progress at a manageable rate despite us having different levels of experience and aspirations. If you are looking to lead outside on either sport or trad routes, this is a brilliant way to learn how to do it safely and with a provider who has outstanding local knowledge and whose approach is forever supportive.
