Project Description

Advanced Scrambling Learn to Lead Course in Snowdonia

Location: Snowdonia
Price: £375 per person
Ratio: 1:2
Length: 3 days
Previous Experience Required: Completion of our advanced scrambling course or experience seconding grade 2/3 scrambles

Who is the course suitable for?

This course is for people that would like to lead their own grade 2 and 3 scrambles. You need to have completed our advanced scrambling course or have experience of seconding grade 2 and 3 scrambles and be able to fit a harness and belay a lead climber.

This course is also ideal preparation for people wanting to head to the Alps under their own steam to try some of the classic mountaineering routes, especially when combined with the skills learnt on our winter skills course and our summer Alpine skills course.

Advanced Scrambling Learn to Lead

What does the course cover?

Over the three days we will refresh your existing skills on grade 3 ground before spending the last two days with you leading on the sharp end of the rope on grade 2 or 3 ground. (We do of course make allowance for the weather).

I have introduced this course due to popular demand and feedback from people attending the advanced scrambling course. The two day course gives people a taste of what grade 2 and 3 scrambles involve and then this course is designed to give you the skills to lead them for yourselves without taking up rock climbing.

Leading grade 2 and 3 scrambles in a reasonable time frame (many of the routes are over a 1000 ft long) involves the technical skills that are shared with rock climbing such as building belays and placing protection but also involves much more decision making as to how to maximise time by being efficient on belays, moving together etc. This course will allow time to give you the technical skills and to look at the grey areas of decision making that these types of route involve.

We will focus on:
Building belays – indirect and direct
Placing protection to protect the leader and second
Efficient ropework
The crossover from pitching to moving together
Route Finding
How to retreat or manage a descent
Mileage on grade 2 and 3 scrambles

We may spend some time in a crag type setting to look at technical skills but the climbing will not be harder than that found on a grade 3 scramble and will be done in boots rather than climbing shoes.

The course is run by Rob at a 1:2 ratio to ensure that you get the highest level of care and instruction.

“Thank you for an excellent five days during late September and early October.  Having enjoyed the Mountain Craft Course a couple of years previously, I was keen to return to Wales again and extend my skills and experience further with Expedition Guide. The scrambling courses were excellent fun, I learnt a lot, and the atmosphere was a lovely blend of learning, focus, and fun stories.  I now feel that I’ve got a solid foundation upon which to build and I’ve been practising the skills at home. I’ll be back for the Winter Skills course as soon as possible.” – Simon – Advanced Scrambling and Advanced Scrambling Learn to Lead
