Project Description

Advanced Scrambling Course in Snowdonia

Location: Snowdonia
Price: £250 per person
Ratio: 1:2
Length: 2 days
Previous Experience Required: Grade 1 scrambling

Who is the Advanced Scrambling course suitable for?

The grade 1 scrambles have now got you hooked, a day with your hands in your pockets just does not do it any more. You fancy tackling some of the bigger classics such as Aonach Eagach, Tower Ridge, The Cuillin and perhaps ultimately the Alps. What you really need is an introduction to the rope techniques and route finding skills to keep you safe.

What does the course cover?

An introduction to the world of mountaineering looking at the skills that are required to tackle some of the finest mountain routes in the UK, including:

The Cneifion Arete (pictured above) – A magnificent Grade 3 scramble which is often compared to an Alpine Ridge. The route starts with a couple of pitches of Difficult grade climbing and then eases off to provide fantastic scrambling up a knife edge ridge.

Dolmen Ridge (Glyder Fach)
A grade 3, three star scramble, finishing a few metres from the summit of Gyder Fach.

Clogwyn y Person Arete
A grade 3, three star scramble. A beautiful alpine style ridge with a couple of pitches of rock climbing followed by exhilarating scrambling. The descent is normally by way of Crib Goch back down to the Llanberis Pass.

Plus many, many more great routes to get you away from the crowds and onto jaw dropping terrain that would normally be the preserve of the rock climber.

The course is run by Rob and Huw at a 1:2 ratio to ensure that you get the highest level of care and instruction.

The advanced scrambling course provides two days out on grade 2 and 3 ground to show you what is involved at this level of scrambling and to introduce you to the technical skills required.

At the end of the course you should be aware of the skills that you require to tackle your own objectives under your own steam. Rob will provide advice on how to progress those skills. If you wish to lead this grade of scramble for yourself you may like to progress onto our advanced scrambling learn to lead course.

The course is great preparation if you are planning your first trip to Skye or your first summer Alpine trip. It is also a pre-requirement for our adventure trips to Skye, Torridon and Ben Nevis.

Martin, Advanced Scrambling Course May 2016

Hi Rob
I just wanted to say a quick thank you for the great scrambling course the other week. You & Huw created a cheerful, supportive atmosphere and made us (well, me anyway) feel like we were part of the team rather than just “newbies” to be dragged up some routes. Even if these were easy routes for the two of you, it was clear you were always switched on and paying attention to our safety (albeit without making a big deal of it). (Thanks especially to Huw for being their to keep me from tumbling off Bristly Ridge – I’m a bit embarrassed at my carelessness there).
I am happy to have done some classic lines in Snowdonia and to have gained a better insight into the various scrambling grades. Great photos on the blog too!
Also, thanks to your encouragement (and an early lift from my B&B landlady), I did tackle Crib Goch and the Snowdon Horseshoe on the Saturday, and had a great (“quality?”) mountain day.
Thanks again
Advanced Scrambling – May 2019
Hello Rob,
As I sit here in the 30 degree London heat I’m thinking back to the novel sensation of being cold and wet as we started the Cneifion Arete on Friday…
Thanks for the excellent guiding, choice of routes and cracking company – exactly what I wanted and very helpful.  It’s reaffirmed my love of scrambling and made me itchy to get back up there and continue my solo explorations.
As I mentioned I’m up in early October with my partner Pam so I’ll hope to see you or Huw then
