Location: Picos de Europa Mountains, Spain – Flying into Bilbao
Price: £595 per person
Length: 5 days
WHO IS THE TREK TRIP SUITABLE FOR?
This trip is suitable for any keen hillwalker who would like to explore the Picos de Europa mountains, climb some of the high peaks in the area as well as visit the Cares Gorge. There will be no technical climbing, no glaciers and no specialist equipment required.
THE PICOS DE EUROPA MOUNTAINS
The Picos de Europa (The Peaks of Europe) National Park lies on the northern coast of Spain between Oviedo and Santander/Bilbao. It is only 50km in land from the coast and quickly rises to a height of 2600m making it a paradise for walkers, with an incredible range of limestone scenery on offer. Beautiful river valleys and pine forests give way to seemingly barren limestone mountains with spectacular views. The flora and funna is exceptional as well, Chamois, Griffon vultures, Golden eagles and many other species are regularly seen, and, although more rarely spotted, bears, wolves and boars still survive in this incredible wilderness
One of the most appealing aspects of walking in the Picos de Europa is the incredible peace and quiet. It would seem that few people outside of Spain visit and so outside the Spanish holidays it is quite. The best time for trekking in the Picos is from the end of August to mid October, at this time the temperatures have dropped, and the mountains are quiet.
We will meet at Bilbao airport and share hire cars. Here is a sample program:
Sunday – Fly into Bilbao Airport. Transfer 2h15 to Arenas de Cabrales
Monday – Climb Cabecina Quemada 1612m from Sotres to Tielve. A nice warm up day with around 800m of ascent and stunning views south into the main part of the Central Picos de Europa.
Tuesday – Climb one of the main peaks in the Eastern part of the picos (Picu San Carlos 2212m, Samelar 2229m, Picu el Grajal 2281m). We will start from Jitu Escarandi as this allows us to park at around 1300m in height and visit the the Refugio de Andara.
Wednesday and Thursday – A circular tour of Picu Urriellu (Naranjo de Bulnes) in the central part of the Picos. Picu Urriellu is often described as the the Queen of Spanish mountain and the jewel of the Picos. During the 2 day trip we will tick off some more 2000m+ peaks, visit the famous Cabana Veronica and stay in the Hotel Aliva a former mountain hut that has been upgraded to give simple hotel style accommodation in the mountains.
Friday – With many meters of climbing in our legs we will have a flatter day to finish but no less spectacular. We will visit the Cares Gorge from Poncebos. The Cares Gorge is often described as the must do walk in the whole of Spain and no visit to the Picos is complete without a visit! We will park at Poncebos and walk halfway into the gorge before returning the way we came. The full walk is possible but leaves you with a 120km taxi ride to get you back to the cars!
Saturday – Transfer back to Bilbao airport.
