Project Description

Sierra Nevada Winter Summits

This is a beautiful week of winter walking and snowshoeing in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Southern Spain, climbing some of the highest mountains in Spain in winter conditions, expanding planning skills, winter movement skills and avalanche avoidance skills all whilst exploring some of the beautiful snowy peaks that the area has to offer in winter.

Location: Sierra Nevada Mountains, Spain – Flying into Malaga
Price: £595 per person
Ratio: 1:4
Length: 5 days

Who is the trip suitable for?

This trip is suitable for any keen hillwalker who would like to explore the Sierra Nevada mountains in winter. There will be no technical climbing and no glaciers. We will introduce you to the skills required to suit the conditions on the ground with snowshoes or on foot (crampons). We have a wide range of mountains to explore and will tailor the week to suit the weather and the snow conditions.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains

The Sierra Nevada National Park is a paradise for walkers, with an incredible range of scenery on offer. Beautiful river valleys and pine forests give way to seemingly barren mountains with spectacular views over the surrounding countryside and Granada. On a clear day, you can even see right across the Mediterranean to Morocco.

One of the most appealing aspects of walking in the Sierra Nevada is the incredible peace and quiet. Due to the huge size of the national park and the fact that few people outside Spain are aware of the excellent hiking available, you can spend the whole day in the mountains and hardly meet anyone. In fact, the Sierra Nevada National Park covers 85,883 hectares, making it the biggest national park in Spain.

In the winter months we can enjoy blue skies and sunshine combined with snow capped peaks – which feels incredibly special in the month of December!

The Programme:

We will meet at Malaga airport and share hire cars. The program will be flexible to allow for the conditions that we find on the ground, but we will aim to explore the area, tick off some summits, enjoy some mountain journeys and expand your knowledge of winter skills.

During the week we would aim journey each day taking in summits and in the process look at: movement on snowshoe and the equipment needed, the use of Transceiver, Probe and Shovel as winter safety equipment, planning routes in winter and referencing the Be Avalanche Aware processes to help with this as well as interpreting snow conditions on the ground and a introductory look at snow science.

What is included in the course cost?

The course fee includes leadership and logistical organisation.
You will need to pay for your own flights and transfers. You will need to book your own accommodation. In 2019 we found a Villa for everyone to share and will happily do the same again for 2020. This part of Spain is pretty cheap compared to the Alpine countries; you can get a good meal out with drinks for 20 Euros.

Testimonials:

Hi Rob –

Whilst it doesn’t seem two minutes since I was recording how much I had enjoyed joining you and Sandy in Torridon last month, I must now again convey my thanks to the pair of you for laying-on a truly magnificent weeks trekking in Sierra Nevada.

The abundant daily sunshine and cooling winds couldn’t have been better for our ascents of the three highest mountains – Mulhacén (3479m), Veleta (3398m) and Alcazaba (3371) – on the mainland of Spain from our base in Monachil. Together with the last, lower and most enjoyable ascent of Trevenque (2079m) on Friday, ensured a week to top any in the mountains anywhere.

The assembled company of Miriam, Claire, Steve, Sarah and Stephen were personification of your ability to bring like minded, fun loving people together.

Great to have been along with everyone.

Bob – October 2019 – Read blog post from that trip here
