Winter Courses – Rob Johnson MIC & IML and Huw Gilbert MIC

Winter Skills, Winter Mountaineering & Climbing, Avalanche Education, Snowshoeing & Ski Touring

The arrival of snow and ice transforms the mountains into a magical winter playground. Its a time of year that I look forward to and enjoy every minute of, I split my time in winter between home in Wales and travelling to Scotland, Norway and the Alps and hence offer a wide variety of courses and trips for all ability levels and aspirations.

“Rob is the definition of the calm professional in an environment that is anything but. He is a walking encyclopaedia of the mountains, and the techniques used to master them for the furthering of your own life story. And he inspires trust by being the safe pair of hands from which you can learn how to make yours steady in the most beautiful and dramatic places in the world – not least North Wales!”
Simon Ingram, Editor – Trail Magazine

I run all of the winter courses myself, together with fellow instructor Huw. We are both holders of the highest instructional qualification in the UK and each have a lifetime of experiences around the world. You can read more about us here.

We run the courses in small friendly groups with the emphasis on empowering you with the skills that you need to be self sufficient in the mountains under your own steam. Our winter skills courses are designed for people who want to enjoy the winter mountains as walkers, learning how to use ice axes, crampons, navigate in winter, avoid being avalanched and tick some great summits off in the process with like minded people. They are also great preparation for the expeditions I run to the Greater Ranges. You might also be interested in our snowshoe courses in Norway and The Alps as a great way for walkers to explore the winter mountains.

Our winter mountaineering courses progress people onto grade 1 to 3 mountaineering routes at a ratio of 1:2 with routes including the Aonach Eagach, Curved Ridge, Ledge Route and many more. For people that want to progress further we also run winter climbing courses in Scotland, Wales and Norway.
