What will you learn?
Hiking
We will spend every day out in the mountains, learning new skills in a progressive manner as we enjoy some of the best routes in Snowdonia.
We will teach you have to navigate safely in all weathers – whatever the level of visibility. We teach you how to read a map and we teach you how this forms the basis of all navigation skills. We progress these skills onto the use of smartphone apps – teaching you the many benefits of this technology as well as the pitfalls and how to avoid them.
The ability to use a compass is another essential skill. Despite all of the advances in technology – this is still the safest way to navigate in poor visibility like thick clouds.
Bringing these skills together we will teach you to plan and then follow your own mountain walks. You will understand how far you will be able to cover in a day and how much height gain. We will show you how to find the best walks in new areas and plan the best routes for the weather that you are given. Each day we will look at mountain weather forecasts and teach you to interpret the information they provide and relate this back to your planning. You will also learn how to recognise changes in the weather on the mountains and how to safely react to them.
Scrambling
As the week progresses we will take you out onto some of our favourite grade one scrambles. We will teach you how to find these routes for yourselves, how to navigate them safely and teach you good movement skills.
Course Aims
With the Summer Mountain Skills Week we aim for you to be self sufficient as a summer hill walker by the end of the course. You should be competent and confident to enjoy grade one scrambles without a guide.
