Morning Rob – I just wanted to say thanks again for  three fantastic days on the Scrambling Learn to Lead course. I was able to cement the things I knew and learned lots more. Your expert knowledge of the local area meant we climbed routes that were challenging, but still safe and enjoyable in the slightly inclement weather. Thanks again and I look forward to future courses! All the best, Mark.
Advanced Scrambling Learn to Lead – May 2023

Thank you for a super week’s scrambling Rob. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Learned lots and did some new routes so very happy indeed. I wish I could be out on the hill every day to put these skills into practice but alas, not yet anyway.
Did you like the Gucci shots that Dave got today? Some corkers there. Chris was teasing me cos I feature in a lot of the best ones apparently. 🤣 He is a good bloke and I should like to hook up with him to practice when next I am up.
Til then, take care out there and keep doing the grand work you do. Many thanks again, Luce 😁😉
Classic Scrambles – April 2023

Morning Rob and Huw, Thanks so much for a fantastic week on the ML course with Huw and Tarquin – I learned an incredible amount. Huw is so passionate, warm, personable, pragmatic, knowledgeable and just to be honest one of those people who kind of inspires you as a role model of what a good leader in the mountains is. I’ve come away feeling I know exactly where I am now, knowing things I didn’t even know I didn’t know, and exactly what I need to do to get ready for the assessment (which I will hopefully see you guys for in the next 12 months!).
Anthony – ML Training – April 2023

Hi Rob, I just want to say a huge thank you for your time and patience and excellent tuition over the past 2 days. I learnt so much and thoroughly enjoyed the course. I feel so much more confident to head off on my own and know I won’t get lost! I only wish I had done the course sooner. Being back at work today was quite the culture shock and I sorely wished I was still in the hills. So I had to console myself by looking at the few photos I took! Thanks again and I hope I can come back and do a trip with you in the future. Best wishes – Ruth April 2023 – Mountain Skills

Hello Rob, Another excellent two days in the mountains I really enjoyed the Scottish Winter Skills course. It was great being taught new things and spending time with inspiring people. I took a lone walk to the summit of the Ben the day after the course which is something I’ve wanted to do for a while now, enjoyably challenging at times and I felt well prepared. It was incredibly beautiful up there. Thanks once again and have a great spring, Best Wishes, Stuart – Winter Skills Weekend, March 2023

Rob, Just wanted to drop a note of thanks for the weekend course. Absolutely loved it and the experience was superb. I learnt a great deal and your coaching and support technique is first class.

Thanks again for a really well run and executed experience.
Best wishes in all that you do for the future.
Craig – Scottish Winter Skills Weekend – March 2023
Hi Rob,

Just a quick thanks for a brilliant course yet again! You’re a brilliant instructor, and Sarah loved it… we’ll defo be back for another course together soon.
Cheers again for a top course and hope you get plenty of snow this week for the rest of your Scottish courses! – David, Scottish Winter Skills Weekend – March 2023

Just wanted to say thanks for a great week. Despite the apparent lack of snow you always seem to be able to find some. Scrambling and updating my rather out of date belay skills was also really useful. Overall a brilliant week – thank you.

Hey Rob, Thank you for a fab course, I thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt lots. I definitely came away having learnt what I wanted to 😊… now to put it all into practise! I’m now the proud owner of 2 new back packable walking poles courtesy of an Ambleside shopping trip! Thanks again.
Dawn Scottish Winter Mountaineering & Climbing Week, Feb 2023

Hi Rob, I just wanted to give a massive thanks to Huw for an excellent week. It really was brilliant and I achieved and learnt everything I had hoped for plus much, much more. Huw made it fun and enjoyable. His enthusiasm was second to none. I’m sure your see me again on a course later in the year in Wales, once I have a better idea of dates I’m available. Rob – Winter Skills – Jan 2023

Hi Rob, – Thanks for the two day scrambling course a couple of weeks ago (Tryfan, Bristly Ridge and Seniors Gully in the rain with Rich and Fliss) it was excellently run and taught and great fun.

I returned this week to Tryfan on Monday and Crib Goch yesterday on my own, both successfull days and thoroughly rewarding.
The approach to the latter really tested my nerves negotiating a route through the up climb (I was fine across the ridge). I had a 5 minute wobble where nearly bottled out but I’m sure in the moment you’re course helped me on and I’m so pleased to have achieved it.  Have a great autumn, Stu. Intro to Scrambling October 22

Dear Rob- Just home and keen to let you and Sandy have this note.
Expedition Guide’s reputation for organising outdoor activities in the mountains of Europe – whether that be in North Wales or Scotland, or Norway or Slovenia – goes before it.
There can be no better demonstration of your deserved standing than the ‘expedition’ Miriam, Nia and Dan, along with  trusted co-guide Sandy, and I have had the good fortune, pleasure, and exhilaration of being part of, in walking across swathes of Switzerland last week.
The first leg of our Haute Route journey from La Chable to Lac de Moiry was simply fantastic.  The scenery was magnificent, the varied topography of our route, choice of refuges and congenial fellow participants, together with a couple of challenging days combined to ensure a wonderful time was had by all, and if that wasn’t enough, you even managed to limit the rain to a single two hour down pour.
Already looking forward to the second leg to Zermatt in 2023.
With thanks to you and Sandy for a truly memorable excursion.

Bob – Walkers Haute Route – August 2022.

Dear Rob, This is just to say that I’ve just come back from 3 days of absolutely awesome, adventurous and breath-taking scrambling, am totally buzzing. Huw is the nicest guy ever! A real gent who takes his time when explaining, gives amazing advice and knows exactly how to teach, develop and let you apply newly-acquired knowledge. And he’s just super easy going and friendly, so please pass on my praise to him. Had an absolute blast and can’t wait to put the knowledge into practice. Thanks for offering such an awesome course, will leave a review on the website as well. 🙂 Best wishes, Justin – Advanced Scrambling Learn to Lead – August 2022

Hello Rob, We just wanted to thank you again for two fantastic days out in the Welsh hills. The write-up and photos in the blog are great too, thank you. You certainly helped us to make the most of the conditions and your warm, straightforward and friendly approach made us all feel instantly at ease. The instruction was excellent, but it often felt like we were out with 3 people we’d known for ages who were helping each other through a hill day. We’ve come away feeling inspired and more confident. I’ve been on a lot of courses and we greatly appreciated the way you go about things from the start to when we all went our separate ways. Really excellent, thank you. Enjoy your break with your family next week. All the very best, David and Ruth – Intro to scrambling – April 2022

Hi Rob, Thank you for a superb week of Scottish adventures! A week of varied conditions but always great fun to be out and, when things didn’t fall in our favour, an excellent opportunity to see those all important decision making processes in action, first hand. Our persistence though was certainly rewarded with some brilliant routes and the conditions on Friday were just stunning – great choice of location and that it was unbelievably quiet made it very special. What a way to bring the season to an end! Can’t wait for the anniversary do to catch up with everyone again and it will be great to get to meet and hear Archie perform in person. In the meantime, if I can help answer any queries or offer any guidance on the music front please tell him to drop me a line – he does seem to be doing pretty good already though! Thank you again for a fantastic week. Cheers, Shae. Scottish Winter Climbing March 2022

Hey Rob, Just thought I’d drop you a line to say I had such a cracking weekend on the course.  I was gutted when I had to cancel the week long course in Jan, I’d been buzzing for it all year. Being able to do the weekend course really made up for it! Huw, Tarquin & Rachel were all fantastic and really good fun. I learned so much from them and feel a lot more confident to head up onto the peaks in the snow. Both days were fantastic, I’m itching to get back out there. I really want to get on next winter’s Scottish winter climbing week! If you  have any dates in mind I’ll happily get my deposit down! I’ll even bring the right crampons next time. David – Scottish winter skills weekend, March 2022

Dear Rob – It is difficult, if not impossible, to find the most appropriate string of superlatives to adequately describe how truly outstanding I – and without doubt, fellow participants – found your Norway Snowshoeing trip, from which we have all just returned. I have settled on ‘an unbelievably stunning and magical outdoor paradise the likes of which one has to experience to be believed’.   A combination of the natural phenomena, the incredibly favourable weather, avalanche awareness and recovery instruction, iPhone photographic tutorials and the evenings culinary skills and resultant delights rustled-up by David and Bryn; and dare I say ‘the girls’; together with infectious camaraderie, personifies what travelling with Expedition Guide is all about. And that’s not to mention a snowshoeing backcloth to die for, a dazzling display of the Northern Lights and introduction to husky sledding and snowmobiling. It doesn’t get any better. Clearly, your, David’s and Bryn’s organisation and leadership throughout, along with the caring and helpful contributions from the exuberant Claire, Rachel, Cath, Julia, Steve and Gary ensured the memories of our wonderful experiences in the Lyngen Alps will be everlasting. It was a delight to share them with my mountain friends; and for that, my thanks to you, David and Bryn knows no bounds. As ever, Bob – February 2022 – Actic Summits Snowshoe Trip

Hi Rob, Just wanted to say a massive thank you for the absolutely fantastic scrambling course. I thought it was brilliant and didn’t want it to end!!! My plan is to do the same course once, maybe twice again with you and then book the advanced scrambling course. I also have my eye on that last space on the Winter Skills Course 12/13th March as l would love to do that again. Thanks again Rob and l look forward to seeing you again soon. Kind Regards
Paul – Intro to scrambling – Nov 21

Hi Rob,Just wanted to say thanks for taking us all out for a couple of days, really enjoyed myself. I’d never been up to Snowdonia but can see why people fall in love with the place. Probably very peaceful if Uncle Shaun isn’t about. Told the missus you were sniffing about my lunch so she insisted I send you the recipe 😂 Hopefully see you up there again soon. Cheers, Dan – Intro to Scrambling Nov 21

Hey Rob! Thanks for the awesome days out and the lovely blog post – really nice to have some pictures of us both on the trail for once! I love Kirsten’s ‘terrified, but making the best of it’ smile climbing up Tryfan – it nicely sums up how much we want to do scrambling routes but just need the confidence and experience 🙂

Having a few simple and easy-to-remember techniques, coupled with a day to put them into practice, worked really nicely – both for scrambling and for navigation. Though we’ve both had plenty of experience hillwalking and backpacking, we were hoping to get some more grounding in the fundamentals so we feel capable of tackling more challenging and complex routes ourselves – and that’s exactly what we got!
It was also an absolute treat having your company for two days and sharing in your love of the mountains and in your many and varied experiences. We’ll definitely be back for more scrambling courses later, and the guided adventures sound very much like our cup of tea. It feels like we’ve opened up a whole new world of holidays now.
Thanks again, Rob!

Hi Rob, Thanks for yesterday, I had a great day and it was fantastic to see you again – glad you’ve survived the last year! Such a treat to be back out…

Thanks for the link, great pics. Look forward to seeing you again soon, hopefully not as long next time! Hope you’re having a good weekend with the family..

Hi Rob
Just wanted to say a big thank you to you and Charlie for a great course last week – thought you could use this as a testimonial if you want –

” Just completed Summer ML training with Rob in Snowdonia last week. I would not hesitate to recommend Rob to anyone thinking of doing the ML or any other mountain course  aspirations they may have. Rob is so much more than a trainer – he comes with a vast experience and passion of the mountains and area he works in, and immediately makes the group feel very comfortable in whatever activity they are doing. He delivered the course with a great sense of humour and even took us to the Mountain Rescue headquarters in Nant Peris, where he was Chairman for several years giving the group a unique insight into a different aspect of the mountains of Snowdonia. Now can’t wait to book on to the Assessment training with Rob as soon as I possibly can. Fantastic week –  many thanks Rob” Cheers again
Mark – Nov 2019

“Hi Rob, Just wanted to say thanks again for allowing an absolute beginner aka hillwalker onto the course, it was an incredible experience; Saboteurfossen was the highlight for me, I really enjoyed the multi-pitch routes! I prepared for the trip as something of a one off but… I’ve been bitten by the bug and ice climbing is definitely on my winter agenda now!! I had originally thought of selling the BD Vipers but it looks like I’m now the proud owner of 5 ice axes, haha.
Pleasure meeting everybody, thanks again.
Cheers, Tom – Rjukan Ice Climbing Week 2019″

Hi Rob & Huw
Just wanted to say what a fantastic two days we had in the mountains. Both of the routes we did were really enjoyable and tested our creaking bodies suffiently.
As ever Huw was patient, enthusiastic and great company. What a wonderful experience of Scottish winter!
Until next time

Rob – I Had a fantastic time! Can I just say I have enjoyed this week so much the guys were a great bunch. This was the first course like this that I have done and certainly won’t be my last ,you were a fantastic leader and teacher. Many thanks again for the 5 days and wonderful memories. Cheers – Darren – Winter Skills Week – Jan 2019

Rob – I would like to reiterate Adrains comments, it been a great week and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the course and your company.
Be good to meet up again. – David – Winter Skills Week – Jan 2019

Hi Rob – Thanks for the course I really enjoyed it and there was a lot of stuff learnt besides hot black current and how to change my layers without losing my top coat. You succeeded in re-ignited my passion for mountaineering so I’ll be selling my time-trial bike this spring. Tri’s are so dull as is the training for them. – Cheers, Brian’s Ledge -Winter Skills Week – Jan 2019

Dear Rob, I being recommended by my friend Keith on your teaching excellence , decided that I needed your expertise on how to scramble for an upcoming trek.                              With trepidation I came along you putting me at ease as soon as we met. I really learnt so much , you corrected my weaknesses fairly soon and gave me newly founded skills to enable me to scramble in a much safer manner, I being the weakest in the group of four you still managed to give individual attention to the others who had greater skills  on which you also added to these, and keeping us all working together as a group, and such a nice group🌞, after the course myself and Keith went over Crib Goch, I asked you before going if you thought I was able to do this, you saying yes and knowing if you thought otherwise you would have said.     We had a lovely day and yes I did it, I do know that this would not have been the case if I had not had your instruction and with it the skills I came away with and the  confidence you gave me doing this and my forth coming trip,So grateful to yourself Rob and to Keith for his recommendation.                         On behalf of Keith and myself, a great time had by all.            With the very best regards .   Teresa Brooker and Keith Nicholson

Hi Rob

Just wanted to say thank you so much for a super couple of days in Snowdonia doing the Intro to Scrambling course. All your advice and instruction was just what I had hoped for. Everyone in the group came away with increased confidence at the end of two days which is testament to your skills and knowledge as a mountain leader but also great people skills! I’ll definitely be back to do more courses with ExpeditionGuide – the Mountain Skills course in Scotland and some climbing next!

Cheers, Catherine – July 2018

Hello Rob,

As I sit here in the 30 degree London heat I’m thinking back to the novel sensation of being cold and wet as we started the Cneifion Arete on Friday…

Thanks for the excellent guiding, choice of routes and cracking company – exactly what I wanted and very helpful.  It’s reaffirmed my love of scrambling and made me itchy to get back up there and continue my solo explorations.

As I mentioned I’m up in early October with my partner Pam so I’ll hope to see you or Huw then

Freddie – Advanced Scrambling – July 2018

Hi Rob, I completed the intro to scrambling course on the 03/04th June with Tarquin Shipley. I thought the course was excellent and was really surprised/pleased with what we had the opportunity to do. I would like to add that Tarquin was a superb guide, knowledgeable and also knew when to let us off the leash so to speak. So much so the skills I have gained have given me the confidence to take on a solo scramble today.
I will finish by giving a big thumbs up to Tarquin, and would highly recommend expedition.com.
Cheers Vaughan.

Hi Kate and Rob,
I just attended your six day course. Sadly a possible medical concern had me leaving yesterday at 3 on route to the wild camp. Not a big loss as I spend several months a years in a bivi bag. However I wanted to write regarding the course. I was terrified most of the time and it was brilliant. Tarquin is a god, I suspect Hugh is too, and Rob is clearly the master. what an amazing team and inspirational leaders. I have written a few words regarding my experience that if any good for you feel free to use.

I have always had a terrible fear of heights, tall buildings, escalators, first floor window & even standing on chairs to change a light bulb. So, what better thing to do but book onto a 6 Day Mountain Craft Course with Expedition Guide.
We met our instructor Tarquin at Moel Siabod Café. Tarquin, a gently spoken man with a relaxed and engaging manner and five of us in the group, four men and one women. Quick introductions and no time wasted as we moved out on to the hills driving out on the A5 to Pont Pen-y-benglog. The landscape was stunning and worth the six hour drive up from my home on the Dorset coast. We started with a look at maps and orientation and macro, micro navigation. I was interested in how best to navigate over mountains. It became obvious that much of it was down to common sense, look at what’s around you and match it on your map! We walked up the gentle slopes looking at distance and pacing’s, light rain and low cloud with the younger men talking about previous visits and possible routes ahead. And then the scrambling began.
Tarquin our guide and instructor with tranquil style and guile led us up and down mountains in rain, hail and flattening winds, my companions were in heaven and I was in panic mode! But with good grace and charm Tarquin pulled you further and further into the adventure and upwards onto the next challenge.

In conclusion was this the right course for me…no and yes.
I was given the chance to push myself and deal with my own fear of heights. If you love the mountains or have a fear like mine I would highly recommend you sign up for a course like this. Would I do more days on the mountains after this, absolutely. I have looked at the group pictures and can’t believe I was in such a state. I have seen teachers and instructors in a variety of situations but none who offer such security and freedom and all at the same time. They clearly love the mountains in all conditions and at any time of the year
If you want to see good leadership skills in action then look no further than Expedition Guide. Com
Aaron Fuest – MountainCraft – April 2018

Rob -What’s few days of bad weather when you’re having such a terrific time in the Julian Alps?  Nothing at all; in fact it merely added to the challenges and intensity of the pleasure your Slovenian party of Sandy, Al, Rich, Steve, Ian and I so much enjoyed last week.  The rugged and majestic limestone peaks together with the woodland ‘walk-ins’ provided some of the most beautiful scenery I have trekked through in the European Alps. The highlight was our ‘big day’ on the via ferrata climb up to ‘the window’ on Prisank……one of the truly epic days of my time in the mountains. Your watchful eye and encouragement appreciated.

Our base in Kranjska Gora was ideal with excellent accommodation and a selection of restaurants to suit all tastes. A great crowd of guys, led by, and guided to, perfection by you and Sandy. No better way to spend a week; thank you.

Bob – Scrambling in the Julian Alps – 2017

Thank you Huw and Rob for a fantastic week scrambling in Wales! You shared great routes, all with a laugh and never ending patience. So many happy adventures, I can’t wait to book on another course!

Best wishes,
Rosie x – Classic Scrambles, August 2017

“A brilliant couple of days thanks Rob. Great scrambling, coaching and company. The most important part was all the knowledge you have given us for us to now take away and feel competent and safe to scramble to a new grade. Thank you from both myself and Adam. Also from my wife Jo for bringing us back safely- her words!

We shall see you again next year I am sure for another adventure”

Mark – Private Guiding – June 2017

Hi Rob,

We had a brilliant four days with Huw and Lucy is now converted to the mountains of North Wales! She was really pleased to do so much scrambling and climbing as she had expected lots of health and safety lectures and the history of the climbing harness! Huw always finds such interesting routes to try and on our free day, due to my excellent nav skills, we went spectacularly off the route on the way down from Moel Siabod and ended up slithering down the heather to the old slate workings! We then met a woman who said” I didn’t think you could get down that way”.Hmmmm!
Thanks for the info about next year’s Skye scrambling but sadly, it is a week too early for me. Looking forward to Norway though.

All the best. Julia – Private Guiding – May 2017

Dear Rob and Huw,

Thank you for providing an outstanding week of scrambling in Skye. The Cuillin skyline was superb, the band of high pressure finally arrived and, most importantly, the camaraderie within the group really made it a spectacular trip. In the words of ‘the’ Sandy Paterson, “Everything was awesome!”

I’ll be back for more,

Alastair – Skye scrambling 2017

Hi Rob,

Thank you for another superb trip to Rjukan. As usual, everything was up to the high standards we know we can rely on from an Expedition Guide venture.
The variety of climbing was excellent and it was great to have a chance to climb with all of your instructing team, each bringing their own valuable insights to the challenges we faced.

I have, of course(!) just paid a deposit for next year’s trip – hope I’m not too late; only got back last night and was alarmed to see how the places we’re disappearing. I definitely need a return match with that mixed route at Krokan!

Cheers,

Shae. – Rjukan Ice Climbing Week – Feb 2017

Hello Rob,
I’d just like to say how wonderful our winter skills week went.
Learnt a lot and feel more comfortable heading off to Sikkim for our track and climb.
Your number two, Huw, has been an exceptional teacher and guide showing us the beautiful mountains of Scotland.
So thank you, Alan – Scottish Winter Skills Week – Feb 2017

Hi Rob,

Thanks for a memorable week of winter skills at the beginning of January. Your practical advice was always perfectly judged and I found the discussions of snow and avalanche risk particularly fascinating. More importantly, you conveyed and inspired a real love of the mountains as well.

Thanks too for bringing the group together for five days of good company and good humour which will stay with me for a long time.

All the best,

Richard – Winter Skills Week – Jan 2017

Thanks Rob

Just wanted to say thank you so much for the last 5 days. I’ve loved every minute of it and have learned so much. Thanks for pushing me and helping me build some confidence.

I’m not sure what I expected from the instructor when I booked as it’s my first experience but the fact you have a great sense of humour and are a real people person made the whole week. I’ve got no other reference point but I’m pretty sure this won’t always be the case with instructors. Unfortunately for you this means I may book on other stuff in future 🙂

Hope the rest of the winter goes well for you and thanks once again for a fantastic week

Jason – Winter Skills Week – Jan 2017

Just wanted to say a big thank you to Huw and Jez for a great course, really informative and practical but great fun at the same time. Learned more about navigation and how to use ropes than I thought possible thanks to them. They were relaxed, knowledgeable, encouraging and full of useful information and interesting facts about mist and fog, goats and urine, tweed and urine and flesh eating plants.
I really enjoyed the mountain-craft course and have come away a bit more confident in my capabilities because I am now more capable. The other people on the course were nice too – we all got on really well, it was great. Might see you again next year..

Thanks again,
Susan – Mountaincraft – Sept 2016

Hi Rob

Just a quick email to say how much I enjoyed the course. It was brilliant. I found it answered all the questions Ive been trying to figure out. Ive been in the mountains now for 3 or 4 years and had picked up so much information but as for the technical side of things this was the one that seemed to of pulled it all together – it was the missing link for me!!

Thanks again and see you in the near future!!

Best Regards

Steve – 5 day learn to lead climbing course – September 2016

Rob,
THANK YOU! A brilliant and most enjoyable week around and above 3000m above Zermatt and Grimentz. Really well planned and executed by you to suit the group and all very professional. Huts on the mountains all good too! But above all, great company, we covered the ground, with good craic along the way. I must now be ready for 4000m?! (I thought I would say that before Bob–Carl has already ticked off a snowy one).
Glad you got back OK-did you make Saturday lunch? I’m about to leave Zermatt this morning after having done a couple of more days in the hills.
Very best wishes and see you again I’m sure,
Richard. – Swiss 3000 – August 2016

Rob, thanks once again for an absolutely wonderful trip. But I hope you appreciate how well I organised the Australian weather for us!! I will post my photos once I have sorted them out. I would very highly recommend this trip to anyone who knows the difference between Cnicht and the Matterhorn. Thanks Rob, Bob and Richard for an awesome time. – Carl, Swiss 3000 – August 2016

Rob – My week traveling the trails to, and climbing the 3000m peaks of the Swiss Alps with Richard and Carl under your trusty care was as a wonderful experience in the mountains as one could wish for. You have that knack of ensuring the weather is perfect, the company enthralling and the experience unforgettable. I simple loved it.

Hope you made your family BBQ and are enjoying the weekend. You seem to have laid-on the weather for me down here in Devon.

Speak soon but for now; with my very best regards

Bob – Swiss 3000, August 2016

Hi Rob,

I just wanted to say thank you for an excellent couple of scrambling days and for introducing Jez.

He is a great instructor and very good company on the mountain (and the ridges, gullies and precarious flakes… even in the rain!)

I had a great time, my skills improved noticeably and felt totally safe and relaxed mostly due to his personable, effortless manner that appeared to be working even on the most stubbornly hesitant clients.

Many thanks

Tina – Advanced Scrambling, July 2016

Hi Rob / Huw,

Just want to say a massive thanks for last weekend, we all absolutely loved it & are just coming down off the high from the whole event & looking what we can do next.

Sincerely thanks.

Mark & Friends – Welsh 3000 – June 2016

Hi Huw, Rob,

Just want to say many thanks for a fantastic Self Rescue course Saturday..!!

Speaking with the guys afterwards we have nothing but positive feedback about the day – we all loved it..!!

Huge credit to Huw… Excellent structure, content and delivery. Lots learnt and all in a fun filled manor. Peachy weather too!

Huw asked for any suggestions we feel may offer improvement, but to be honest we all discussed and agreed the content & structure was perfect. The manner in which Huw introduced each of the building blocks and used in the various systems & scenarios during the morning session was excellent. To then put these into practice on the crag in the afternoon was hugely beneficial. The extended day was also very helpful – thanks to Huw for doing this.

Rob… I mentioned to Huw that we’re keen to hold another Self Rescue course later in the summer. It would be fantastic if Huw (or yourself) was available and could replicate the day for other KMC members.

Cheers guys.
Thanks Huw – great day!!
Steve. Private Guiding – Self Rescue for Climbers

Hi Rob,

Thank you for the excellent 2 days we spent with you. Your guidance was perfectly pitched for the boys abilities and as a parent I was able to fully relax. They are already pestering me for a repeat trip.

Cheers

John – Private Guiding June 2016

Hi Rob
Thank you very much for all the photos and the films – it is great to relive all the fantastic climbing and views. What a week!

Thank you for such a wonderful week up on the Cuillin ridge with superb scrambling and great views which I shall treasure! Please pass on my thanks to your great team, especially Sandy who encouraged me all week. It could not have been better! I did not expect to be able to scramble every day and experience so much of the ridge, but with the sunshine and clear weather it was impossible to stop! Elgol is a special place and the last day there was just right for me.
I have come home tired but happy! I would love to join you again.
Elspeth – Skye Scrambling – May 2016

Hi Rob,

I just wanted to thank you for an excellent learning experience I had whilst on the course the other week. I am no longer day dreaming about off trail back country travel, with the knowledge gained and lots of practice I feel confident that I can undertake a such a trip with confidence.

All the best,

Mauro – Mountain Skills – May 2016

Dear Huw and Rob,

I wanted to say thank you for providing such an outstanding week of scrambling in Snowdonia. Under your watchful eye I have gained much more confidence standing tall on all the knife-edge arêtes and narrow ledges that Snowdonia has to offer. Having climbed the best part of 15,000 feet over the course of the week, I feel privileged to have joined the ‘I survived 5 days with Huw Gilbert’ club! It always great to take on new challenges in the mountains in the company of new friends.

I will be back for more – bring on the Cuillin Ridge!

Best wishes,

Alastair – Classic Scrambles – May 2016

“Hi Rob,
Thanks to you and Huw for a great couple of days excellent scrambling.

Thanks again and looking forward to next months learn to lead course .

Hi Rob,

I wanted to say a huge thank you for the fantastic course. I still don’t know quite how you managed to coach me up the North Ridge of Tryfan, but you did, and I’m still on a high! You and Huw are clearly extremely skilled at what you do and this, coupled with your calmness, instilled confidence right from the start. I thought the whole course was run in a very professional yet really friendly manner. In short, it was totally brilliant!

I’m looking forward to more great days in the mountains this summer, armed with a new found confidence – thank you so much.

All the best,

Kate – Intro to Scrambling, May 2016

Thanks rob
Thoroughly enjoyed it and will defiantly look to do some other courses with you.
Please send my thanks to Huw and Rob for all of their help.
Best regards.
Michael. Intro to Scrambling – May 2016

Rob,

Thanks for the photos!

Thanks again for a very informative and enjoyable couple of days in the hills. I’ll upload my pics in the next couple of days and send you all a download link. It was great meeting everyone (Skye included)

Kind regards
Sean

Hi Rob,

Many thanks for the two days.

I had great time and learned enough to keep me going for years – just need to put it into practice now!

All the best,

Chris – Mountain Skills Course – May 2016

Hi Rob,

Thanks for an excellent course, new skills introduced in an informative and enjoyable fashion . My thanks to Tarquin for his company and instruction.
Time spent in the winter hills have confirmed my desire to continue and progress in this fantastic mountain environment, will be booking another course for 2017. Hope to meet up again sometime over the summer.
Cheers,
Martin.

5 day winter skills – March 2016

Rob,

Just wanted to say thanks for a great two weeks and thanks for uploading the photos. What outrageously good weather, its grey and miserable here in London. I’ll reply to all later on after uploading the ones we’ve taken. A bit of recovery time needed before we decide what we want to do next!

Regards,
Tom and Laura – 5 day winter skills and 3 day winter mountaineering – March 2016

Hi Rob – We had such a brilliant time, thank you so much. It was crunch time for me on
whether ice climbing is really for me or not and it was definitely a winner,
right from the first day. The team were great and the whole group were good
company and always warmly encouraging of one another.

It takes unusual talent to engender such an environment, so thank you for
leading the trip so well. Rusty was just brilliant and matched our keen appetite
with his own enthusiasm for the climbing every single day.

We’re definitely up for other excursions, so please keep working your way
through the bucket list!

All best, Sharon

Rjukan Ice Climbing Week, Norway – Feb 2016

Hi Rob,
Just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you for yet another fantastic trip to Rjukan. As usual everything was organised brilliantly and the instruction was top notch; combined with the excellent conditions this lead to a superb trip.
Even the Tuesday morning dunking didn’t lead to a dampener to the proceedings! Thank you once again for catering to my predicament and salvaging the day!

I’d like to sign up for next year’s trip, so if that’s ok let me know and I’ll pay you a deposit straight away.

Thanks again,

Shae.

Rjukan Ice Climbing Week, Norway – Feb 2016

Hi Rob,

Many thanks for the course last week. I have learnt a lot, and finally have some structure to a decision making process in avalanche terrain.

All the best

Kev – Avalanche Avoidance – Jan 2016

Thank you once again Rob for an amazing informative week, hope to see you again very soon, Sam and Shamaila xxx
Winter Skills 5 day – Jan 2016

Hi Rob, thanks very much for a great week, enjoy the rest of your time in Scotland and catch up soon. Mike – Winter Skills 5 day – Jan 2016

Amazing week in the scottish mountains learning winter skills. Stunning scenery, first class instruction from Rob and Huw and a great group of people. Looking forward to coming back to the highlands soon to play in the snow!

Oli – Winter Skills 5 day – Jan 2016

Dear Rob,

Patagonia 2015 – Billed as ‘The Expedition of a Lifetime’; well, you undersold it big style!

It was much more than that; in fact there are not enough superlatives in the dictionary to adequately describe just how fantastic our excursion to South America really was.

Twelve intrepid trekkers (well sort of); comparative strangers at the outset, characters throughout and new friends at the end. Led by you and Huw along with local guides, Louise, in Argentina and Christian, in Chile through some of the most sensational scenery – the spires of Fitz Roy and the Torre Del Paine National Park; and natural phenomena – the Moreno and Grey Glaciers and the icebergs on Grey Lake, on the planet….to mention a few!

Together with wonderful weather from the Gods, fun by the minute, memories to treasure and organisation personified; it simply couldn’t have been any better.

Can’t thank you enough for making it all possible and great to have shared the adventure with you, ‘Matron’, Sam, Rachel, Charlie, Smally, Steve, Paul, John, Roddy and Huw.

Bob – Patagonia Expedition – November, 2015

Hi Rob,
Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed the scrambling course.
Would you pass on a big thanks to Sam whose guiding and instruction skills were excellent.
Good company, brilliant tuition, stunning scenery, blue skies, sunshine and dry rock…. the best Snowdonia had to offer… What more could you ask for?
Hope to catch up very soon.
All the best Martin.

Advanced Scrambling 9-10 July 2015.

Hi Rob,

Just wanted to send a quick thanks to yourself and Huw. The course last week was fantasic. Huw was great at supporting us and increasing our confidence and being able to go from complete scrambling beginners to the Cneifion Arete in the course of a week was great. I was also delighted to finally make it over Crib Goch having backed off once before and had a chip on my shoulder for 4 years because of it. We’ll definitely be looking at coming back next year and learning more skills.

Regards,
Tom – 5 day classic scrambles – June 2015

Hi Rob

Thanks for lasts week’s excitement. Tracey and I had an absolutely great time. I think our work colleagues are fed up hearing about our adventures.
You covered all the things we wanted to “tick off” and got us leading a route in the rain too! I don’t think I’ll ever forget the exhilaration and satisfaction of the sea cliff at South Stack on such a windy day! Yet another successful holiday where I have had the mickey taken by the two of you all week.

I’ve posted up some photos (although I have still got the videos to process).
https://goo.gl/photos/THTEkRJJgXmYQPUY6
Whilst the one of you in the storm shelter is a classic, the one of you giggling at South Stack is brilliant.

We’re already looking forward to our next marriage guidance holiday… 6 weeks to go!

Thanks again

Richard – 5 days private guiding – June 2015

Hi Rob,

Many thanks for the recent course. I had a thoroughly enjoyable time learning new skills with Huw.

Huw was an exceptional guide/ instructor once again and instilled a lot of confidence within me to be able to take others on trickier routes using rope techniques, route finding and judgement; I may work back up to Dolmen Ridge as a lead though. (excellent but nerve racking)

I will be sure to enroll on another course/ expedition in the future.

Once again many thanks.

Tom Chaney – Advanced Scrambling Learn to Lead June 2015

Hi Rob,
Just to say thank you for giving me such an amazing Five days climbing. I really feel I have progressed and gained in confidence, even if my body is battered! Huw took me to Angelsey today and we did three routes, ending with Shite Hawk Alley, one name I won’t forget! The weather just got better and better with not one drop of rain.
Hope you have a great weekend and already looking forward to scrambling in July.
All the best,
Julia – 5 day climbing (Private Guiding) May 2015

A HUGE thank you to @RobJohnsonMIC for this weeks ML training. Passionate, humble and very knowledgable. Highly recommended @MtnTraining ! Callum – ML Training – May 2015

Rob,

Just wanted to say many thanks to you and Hugh for such an enjoyable time last week. The combination of the weather and the great scrambles made it exceptional. I feel as though I learned a lot in such a short space of time and very much appreciated your and Hugh’s encouragement and patience. Determined to give Skye a go next year so will be in touch. I was also very relieved to learn that my young friend, Rupert, is safe following the earthquake in Nepal. You may recall he was going to try a double ascent and was at the foot of the Northeast Ridge when it struck; on the Tibet side but still hit by aftershocks etc. He has had to abandon his trip but is now hoping to help with the relief effort. Just makes you realise how tenuous and unpredictable life can be, especially in the mountains!
Hopefully see you in Skye next year and thanks once again.

Mark – Classic Scrambles – April 2015

Hey Rob, thanks for the past week, as always it was fab! Please pass my thanks on to Huw too – he’s a top guy.

See you soon 🙂

Dan – Classic Scrambles – April 2015

Hi Rob,

I just wanted to say thank you for a great week, I certainly got everything out of it that I wanted to. I thought both yours and Huw’s instruction was fantastic; very professional, but at the same time it felt like we were out in the hills with a couple of mates!

Cheers

Gareth – Mountaincraft – April 2015

Hi Rob,

I wanted to write and say thank you from Paul and I for a great weeks course – we both really enjoyed ourselves and felt we learnt a lot and built our confidence in the mountains significantly, which is what we were looking for.

Please pass on our thanks to Huw and Rob, and thank Rob for getting me down off Moel Siabod when I twisted my ankle! He’s a legend, and will make a great guide himself.

Best, Roisin (and Paul) Mountaincraft – April 2015

Hi Rob,

Thank you to you, Huw and Rob for making our Mountain Craft course such an enjoyable and memorable week. I am looking forward to trying out all the new skills you taught us.

I am also looking forward to meeting you and Steve again in the summer on your Iceland Trek.

Very best wishes,

Keith- Mountaincraft – April 2015

Hi Rob, Now that I am back from Snowdonia and have e-mail access, I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for an excellent Contour Navigation day on Fri, I learned a lot not only from you and the course itself but also from the quality people around me, sharing experiences and gaining useful tips was an added bonus to an excellent training day. Many thanks, Bob – Advanced Navigation Day – April 2015

Evening Rob, just landed home after a cracking day on the course today. Just wanted to say thanks very much to Huw(apologies if spelling incorrect) and yourself. To be honest I thought it would be a bit full on but I couldn’t have been further from the truth. We didn’t just learn about navigation though, we were given the opportunity to pick up tons of stuff about the environment and geology which made for a thoroughly great day.
I shall be recommending the day to as many folk as I can.
I’ll be back for more training with you if you’ll have me.
Cheers again for a brilliant day.
Al , who lives in Wigan but doesn’t come from there.

Advanced Navigation Day – April 2015
Hi Rob,

Thanks for the course this weekend. I really enjoyed it, and, despite walking most of my life, feel I have attained some additional skills that I will now adopt in the future. Don’t be surprised to see me applying for your mountain leader course at a later stage. I will now begin the 20 precursor walks.

I will also let you know how the Haute Route went and send some photos,
Cheers,

Mark Samuels – Mountain Skills – April 2015

Hi Rob
Thank you for taking me on with the group at Fort William on 9th – 13th March. It was an amazing experience – one that I have always hoped for and never quite achieved. You were so supportive towards the whole group that we were able to achieve more than we had expected was possible. I particularly loved getting up on to the icy snow on Aonach Mor and using the ice axe and crampons. I am looking forward to exploring more mountains in winter next year!
Rachel sent me your film of Ben Nevis – well done! It is very exciting. It must have taken you quite a time, with climbing the Ben as well as all that filming. I have sent it on to my sons and they are very impressed! They have both climbed the north face of the Ben, one in winter.

Keep up the good work!

Best wishes
Elspeth Brien – Winter Skills Feb 2015

Rob, thanks for an amazing trip. I had so much fun and was pleased with progress given I’ve not strapped those crampons on since 2012.

Please thank Dave, Huw and Baggy too. The guidance from you guys and tuition were invaluable. I learnt loads and will try to get down the indoor ice wall to practice technique.

If the trip is on again next year count me in and I’ll ensure I turn up prepared, stronger and with improved technique.

Thanks again for an awesome week of ice and some great laughs !

All the best

Hi Rob

Just a quick email to thank you for an amazing 4 days last week!! It did surpass all my expectations and I’m thinking now I’m in my office chair weather, if I was told exactly what id signed up for id of actually done it! But now I’m hooked and its boosted my confidence no end. I read the other day life doesn’t begin until your outside your comfort zone, and I sure was for a soft southerner but I loved every minute of it. I’m just frustrated now as I’m totally hooked and want to learn more! Big thanks to Huw to I got on really well with him and enjoyed the day out on the Aonach Eagach with him. Mark was a great guy to and learnt from him as well. loved it all! Can’t wait for the next instalment which should naturally be the scrambling course however I’m not sure if I can make any of the dates yet I’ll have to wait and see if I can work it, what with our Mera peak and Tibet trip.

Have a great time in Norway and say hello to Simon for me.Thanks again and hope to see you soon.

Best Regards

Steve – Scottish Winter Climbing – Feb 15

Evening Rob

We just wanted to say “thanks” for an excellent weekend on the winter skills course. We both had a brilliant time. It was great to meet everybody on the course. Thanks for the great weather!!

Your passion for the mountains was obvious and your willingness to share your experience and expertise great for building our confidence to head further into the winter mountains.

We noted the link to “the mountain” TV series; the acting career looks to be going forward in leaps and bounds! Good luck with the beard.

Thanks again.

John & Evelin Winter Skills Weekend, Jan 2015

Rob, thank you for your professionalism and absolute grace with repeat takes of climbing, clambering and hiking for the film we shot with you. Without a doubt the final product would in no way have been as good without your guidance, location sourcing and expertise. Thanks for keeping us safe. As a film production company we’d have no hesitation in recommending you for any similar ventures. All the best, Gary Wales, Producer, DirectionGroup – Snowdonia Film Safety – Jan 2015
Hi Rob,
I think you’ll have to have a career change as you were a natural!
The day was good fun and we got the results Sean was hoping for.
Thank you for being such a good sport during the day… it can be tiring being in front of those lights.
You gave as much to the shoot as any model would have. And also as you have come from an authentic angle…
I believe it was more successful.

I will follow your expeditions on line and look forward to catching you on TV in ‘The Mountain’ and of course in the Fujitsu campaign too!

Take care

Debra – www.debrahurfordbrown.com – Professional Photographer. Explorer Photo shoot – Jan 2015

Hi Rob, Huge thanks to you, I thought Friday went excellently.

I really thought you captured the expressions and ‘look’ that we were after brilliantly … as well as providing valuable input into how the make-up should look based on your ‘real life’ experiences.

Hopefully it will all be a success for the client … who knows, maybe in 6 months we’ll need to extend the campaign and do a new set of shots … but this time on location somewhere in the world, depending on where you advise! 😉

Sean – Direction Marketing Group – Explorer Photo shoot – Jan 2015

Rob,

Thanks for a great weekend, learnt a lot , great fun and now have the confidence to tackle the Scottish winter, and by the way thank you for the weather,Scotland was stunning!

Regards

Ben – Winter Skills Weekend, Jan 2015

Hi Rob,
What a fantastic weekend, so enjoyable and useful. There’s snow here in the lakes too so I am hoping to get out there and practise next week!
Good luck with the beard!
Many thanks

Rachel Winter Skills Weekend, Jan 2015

Hi Rob –

Hope all well and your course in Tignes is going/has gone well.

Please don’t think, for a moment, that the delay in my getting this note to you has in any way diminished my memory of our stupendous expedition to the High Atlas mountains that we completed with the ‘Toubkal Gang’ a fortnight ago. The excursion had to be experienced to be believed and whilst we weren’t able to tackle Toubkal I thought the trip was perhaps, in some ways, better than had we summited given the exposure we had to such extreme snow conditions and the use of snow shoes and crampons.

As you know, other than my introduction to winter mountaineering via your Scottish skills course last January, it was my first real outing in ‘full-on’ winter conditions and the experience at altitude did not disappoint. I had a fabulous time, with a great crowd of people – Yorkshire contingent aside – which coupled with the ‘snow science’ – love the expression – sessions, snow hole building acclimatisation exercises and your and Bryn’s safety first approach ensured that there was never a moment of concern and enjoyment was the name of the game.

A couple of relaxing – and warm – nights in Marrakech was the icing – no pun intended – on the cake; my thanks know no bounds and I look forward to being with you in the mountains again soon.

Best regards.

Bob – Morocco 2014

Hey Rob, hope you and your family had a nice Christmas. Have you had much snow up in Snowdonia?

I know it’s almost a month late but I just wanted to email and say thank you for the Morocco trip. I thoroughly enjoyed, even though we didn’t get to summit anything. It was great to finally get some crampons on and get an axe in my hand – I can’t wait for Scotland now!

Please pass on my thanks to Bryn also.

Anyway, enjoy the rest of your Christmas break, and I’ll see you soon!

Many thanks,

Dan – Morocco 2014

Rob,

Just a quick note to say thanks for a great week, enjoyed your and Huws company as always.
Just had time to reflect on what was said and going into the week navigation and contour recognition was my weakness! And obviously showed.

Off to the lakes next week to do some practice.

The Ml inspires me to get into the hills, I just love being there, all be it when Iam struggling up the hill, note to self work on my fitness.

There will be the return of the Jedi, but this time using more than just the force!

See you in Jan, have a great Xmas and new year!

Regards

Ben

ML Assessment Nov 14

Hi Rob,
Just a short note to thank you and Huw for yet another brilliant week.
I had a great time and enjoyed every element of the assessment and was especially pleased when the time spent in the hills paid off.
Hope to see you both again sometime soon.
Cheers,
Martin.

ML assessment Nov 2014.

Hi Rob, Huw,

Thanks again for such a superb week – a massive pleasure to learn from and spend time with you both as always.

Obviously thrilled to have got the thumbs-up from you both too. Praise really matters when it comes from people you respect.

Cheers guys,

Dan
ML Assessment Nov 14

Hi Rob – Thank you very much for an amazing couple of days, really enjoyed it and benefited from your knowledge, expertise and skills, I now know what I need to improve on.
Thank you also for your patience with me and the ‘shamaila shamaila plod’, hopefully see you on the next adventure to do more firsts and conquer more fears and heights. xxx
Shamaila – Mountain Navigation & Skills Course – Oct 2014

Hi Rob, how you doing? Enjoying your well deserved day off I hope?

I can’t really express my gratitude to you in words for the past couple of days. It was one of the best experiences of my life, right up there with being at the births of my kids!

I don’t want to sound all weird, but I somehow feel enlightened. I really can’t explain it. I feel like a new me! I can only describe it as being akin to a religous experience. I feel I have so much more confidence throughout all aspects of my life, but my legs are a bit tender, haha.

I couldn’t say this to my eldest daughter as she’d accuse me of blasphemy, but after that experience, I feel as if walking is my religion, and the mountains my church!

As I said to Kevin before I left the cafe, I sincerely cannot think of two people that I would rather have shared the experience with.

Thank you for the photos too, they put a whole new perspective on it all.

I’ll definitely keep in touch (not in a stalkery way) although I kept the signed copy of the scrambling book under my pillow last night………. (didn’t really)………. and I look forward to booking myself on another course when I can.

Thanks again

Cheers

Steve – Intro to Scrambling – October 2014

p.s. say hi to Skye from me. She’s gorgeous!

Hi Rob
Many thanks for our trip to Slovenia and for making my first alpine sortie
so enjoyable. What a beautiful country!!

Thanks Richard and Tracey for the compilation of photo’s and you Rob for yours which I
downloaded.

Thanks Barry for looking after me!

Thanks especially to you Rob for organising the trip and your guidance during it. I was really
made up to sample some via ferrata and the whole experience surpassed my expectations.

All the best

Bill – Scrambling in Slovenia, September 2014

Hi Rob

What a brilliant week!!

I think Rich said that it was a trip of “extremes” and there is no argument there….

Hot, 1,500m, climbs through forest, along cliff faces, scrambles, beautiful scenery, high level plateaus and scintillating summits. Amazing descents along zig-zag paths, surrounded by endless valleys and Dwarf Pine terraces.
The “Mountain huts” and hut living. Wholesome food, Dremel resistant Sausage, hearty breakfasts and no loitering in the toilet.

Cold, snow covered, freezing paths.

Soft beds, clean sheets and relaxing shower. Followed by Gourmet food and fine wine.

But, best of all was the company!!

Thanks for the company and the laughs. And, of course, Rob for your Skills, Judgement and Expertise.

See you all again soon.

Best regards

Barry- Scrambling in Slovenia, September 2014

Hi Rob – Many thanks for the fantastic opportunity to test run your Slovenian Trip. Tracey and I had a superb time. Slovenia was beautiful and the trekking was better than we could have dreamed. The scrambling from the overnight hut to the summit will be very hard to beat! Once again, your relaxed and boundless enthusiasm ensured that we had an unforgettable holiday.

Of course finishing the holiday with two exquisite multiple-course meals in the space of 6 hours in a superb hotel didn’t taint the holiday at all!!! 😉

All in all a huge success – Richard & Tracy

Scrambling in Slovenia, September 2014

Hi Rob,
Had a great couple of days’ scrambling on Thursday and Friday with Bryn. It has given me a perspective on what is involved in grade 2 and 3 scrambles and plenty to ponder. I found the Dolmen Ridge hard work (not fit and flexible enough!) but seemed to find my rhythm a bit more on Cneifion Arete/North West Face. Good company in Bryn and John (on the first day) and good instruction from Bryn made it enjoyable as well as tiring. Please pass on my thanks to Bryn.

All the best, Andy – Advanced Scrambling – Sept 2014

Hey Rob, how’s it going?

How were the Julian Alps? You going back next year?

Sorry it’s taken me a while to get in touch, I meant to email you sooner. Just wanted to say thanks for a great trip – I had an amazing time and so did the old man (although it took him over a week to stop moaning about his knees)! Going back to work on the Monday upset me.

Anyway, onto the next trip I suppose! Can’t wait for Morocco. If it’s anywhere near as good as the Swiss 3000’s it’s going to be awesome.

I would also like to take the last place you have on the Scottish Winter Mountaineering in May.

Also, as mentioned I’d like to join you for some scrambling in Skye followed by some climbing on the sea stacks. Let me know your thoughts and we can get something planned 🙂

Anyway, hope all is well.

Dan

Swiss 3000’s week – August 2014

Hi Rob
Many thanks, brilliant photos and we had a truly memorable time, with such a lovely group of people. And thanks so much for your calm and friendly leadership. I’m looking forward to booking our next trip (still trying to talk Steve into it J).

Thanks again Rob, it was amazing.

Sarah and Steve.
