Testimonials Expeditionguide – Rob Johnson
Hi Rob, I completed the intro to scrambling course on the 03/04th June with Tarquin Shipley. I thought the course was excellent and was really surprised/pleased with what we had the opportunity to do. I would like to add that Tarquin was a superb guide, knowledgeable and also knew when to let us off the leash so to speak. So much so the skills I have gained have given me the confidence to take on a solo scramble today.
I will finish by giving a big thumbs up to Tarquin, and would highly recommend expedition.com.
Hi Kate and Rob,
I just attended your six day course. Sadly a possible medical concern had me leaving yesterday at 3 on route to the wild camp. Not a big loss as I spend several months a years in a bivi bag. However I wanted to write regarding the course. I was terrified most of the time and it was brilliant. Tarquin is a god, I suspect Hugh is too, and Rob is clearly the master. what an amazing team and inspirational leaders. I have written a few words regarding my experience that if any good for you feel free to use.
I have always had a terrible fear of heights, tall buildings, escalators, first floor window & even standing on chairs to change a light bulb. So, what better thing to do but book onto a 6 Day Mountain Craft Course with Expedition Guide.
We met our instructor Tarquin at Moel Siabod Café. Tarquin, a gently spoken man with a relaxed and engaging manner and five of us in the group, four men and one women. Quick introductions and no time wasted as we moved out on to the hills driving out on the A5 to Pont Pen-y-benglog. The landscape was stunning and worth the six hour drive up from my home on the Dorset coast. We started with a look at maps and orientation and macro, micro navigation. I was interested in how best to navigate over mountains. It became obvious that much of it was down to common sense, look at what’s around you and match it on your map! We walked up the gentle slopes looking at distance and pacing’s, light rain and low cloud with the younger men talking about previous visits and possible routes ahead. And then the scrambling began.
Tarquin our guide and instructor with tranquil style and guile led us up and down mountains in rain, hail and flattening winds, my companions were in heaven and I was in panic mode! But with good grace and charm Tarquin pulled you further and further into the adventure and upwards onto the next challenge.
In conclusion was this the right course for me…no and yes.
I was given the chance to push myself and deal with my own fear of heights. If you love the mountains or have a fear like mine I would highly recommend you sign up for a course like this. Would I do more days on the mountains after this, absolutely. I have looked at the group pictures and can’t believe I was in such a state. I have seen teachers and instructors in a variety of situations but none who offer such security and freedom and all at the same time. They clearly love the mountains in all conditions and at any time of the year
If you want to see good leadership skills in action then look no further than Expedition Guide. Com

Rob -What’s few days of bad weather when you’re having such a terrific time in the Julian Alps? Nothing at all; in fact it merely added to the challenges and intensity of the pleasure your Slovenian party of Sandy, Al, Rich, Steve, Ian and I so much enjoyed last week. The rugged and majestic limestone peaks together with the woodland ‘walk-ins’ provided some of the most beautiful scenery I have trekked through in the European Alps. The highlight was our ‘big day’ on the via ferrata climb up to ‘the window’ on Prisank……one of the truly epic days of my time in the mountains. Your watchful eye and encouragement appreciated.
Our base in Kranjska Gora was ideal with excellent accommodation and a selection of restaurants to suit all tastes. A great crowd of guys, led by, and guided to, perfection by you and Sandy. No better way to spend a week; thank you.
Bob – Scrambling in the Julian Alps – 2017
Thank you Huw and Rob for a fantastic week scrambling in Wales! You shared great routes, all with a laugh and never ending patience. So many happy adventures, I can’t wait to book on another course!
Rosie x – Classic Scrambles, August 2017
“A brilliant couple of days thanks Rob. Great scrambling, coaching and company. The most important part was all the knowledge you have given us for us to now take away and feel competent and safe to scramble to a new grade. Thank you from both myself and Adam. Also from my wife Jo for bringing us back safely- her words!
We shall see you again next year I am sure for another adventure”
Mark – Private Guiding – June 2017
We had a brilliant four days with Huw and Lucy is now converted to the mountains of North Wales! She was really pleased to do so much scrambling and climbing as she had expected lots of health and safety lectures and the history of the climbing harness! Huw always finds such interesting routes to try and on our free day, due to my excellent nav skills, we went spectacularly off the route on the way down from Moel Siabod and ended up slithering down the heather to the old slate workings! We then met a woman who said” I didn’t think you could get down that way”.Hmmmm!
Thanks for the info about next year’s Skye scrambling but sadly, it is a week too early for me. Looking forward to Norway though.
All the best. Julia – Private Guiding – May 2017
Dear Rob and Huw,
Thank you for providing an outstanding week of scrambling in Skye. The Cuillin skyline was superb, the band of high pressure finally arrived and, most importantly, the camaraderie within the group really made it a spectacular trip. In the words of ‘the’ Sandy Paterson, “Everything was awesome!”
I’ll be back for more,
Alastair – Skye scrambling 2017
Thank you for another superb trip to Rjukan. As usual, everything was up to the high standards we know we can rely on from an Expedition Guide venture.
The variety of climbing was excellent and it was great to have a chance to climb with all of your instructing team, each bringing their own valuable insights to the challenges we faced.
I have, of course(!) just paid a deposit for next year’s trip – hope I’m not too late; only got back last night and was alarmed to see how the places we’re disappearing. I definitely need a return match with that mixed route at Krokan!
Shae. – Rjukan Ice Climbing Week – Feb 2017
I’d just like to say how wonderful our winter skills week went.
Learnt a lot and feel more comfortable heading off to Sikkim for our track and climb.
Your number two, Huw, has been an exceptional teacher and guide showing us the beautiful mountains of Scotland.
So thank you, Alan – Scottish Winter Skills Week – Feb 2017
Thanks for a memorable week of winter skills at the beginning of January. Your practical advice was always perfectly judged and I found the discussions of snow and avalanche risk particularly fascinating. More importantly, you conveyed and inspired a real love of the mountains as well.
Thanks too for bringing the group together for five days of good company and good humour which will stay with me for a long time.
All the best,
Richard – Winter Skills Week – Jan 2017
Just wanted to say thank you so much for the last 5 days. I’ve loved every minute of it and have learned so much. Thanks for pushing me and helping me build some confidence.
I’m not sure what I expected from the instructor when I booked as it’s my first experience but the fact you have a great sense of humour and are a real people person made the whole week. I’ve got no other reference point but I’m pretty sure this won’t always be the case with instructors. Unfortunately for you this means I may book on other stuff in future 🙂
Hope the rest of the winter goes well for you and thanks once again for a fantastic week
Jason – Winter Skills Week – Jan 2017
Just wanted to say a big thank you to Huw and Jez for a great course, really informative and practical but great fun at the same time. Learned more about navigation and how to use ropes than I thought possible thanks to them. They were relaxed, knowledgeable, encouraging and full of useful information and interesting facts about mist and fog, goats and urine, tweed and urine and flesh eating plants.
I really enjoyed the mountain-craft course and have come away a bit more confident in my capabilities because I am now more capable. The other people on the course were nice too – we all got on really well, it was great. Might see you again next year..
Susan – Mountaincraft – Sept 2016
Just a quick email to say how much I enjoyed the course. It was brilliant. I found it answered all the questions Ive been trying to figure out. Ive been in the mountains now for 3 or 4 years and had picked up so much information but as for the technical side of things this was the one that seemed to of pulled it all together – it was the missing link for me!!
Thanks again and see you in the near future!!
Steve – 5 day learn to lead climbing course – September 2016
THANK YOU! A brilliant and most enjoyable week around and above 3000m above Zermatt and Grimentz. Really well planned and executed by you to suit the group and all very professional. Huts on the mountains all good too! But above all, great company, we covered the ground, with good craic along the way. I must now be ready for 4000m?! (I thought I would say that before Bob–Carl has already ticked off a snowy one).
Glad you got back OK-did you make Saturday lunch? I’m about to leave Zermatt this morning after having done a couple of more days in the hills.
Very best wishes and see you again I’m sure,
Richard. – Swiss 3000 – August 2016
Rob, thanks once again for an absolutely wonderful trip. But I hope you appreciate how well I organised the Australian weather for us!! I will post my photos once I have sorted them out. I would very highly recommend this trip to anyone who knows the difference between Cnicht and the Matterhorn. Thanks Rob, Bob and Richard for an awesome time. – Carl, Swiss 3000 – August 2016
Rob – My week traveling the trails to, and climbing the 3000m peaks of the Swiss Alps with Richard and Carl under your trusty care was as a wonderful experience in the mountains as one could wish for. You have that knack of ensuring the weather is perfect, the company enthralling and the experience unforgettable. I simple loved it.
Hope you made your family BBQ and are enjoying the weekend. You seem to have laid-on the weather for me down here in Devon.
Speak soon but for now; with my very best regards
Bob – Swiss 3000, August 2016
I just wanted to say thank you for an excellent couple of scrambling days and for introducing Jez.
He is a great instructor and very good company on the mountain (and the ridges, gullies and precarious flakes… even in the rain!)
I had a great time, my skills improved noticeably and felt totally safe and relaxed mostly due to his personable, effortless manner that appeared to be working even on the most stubbornly hesitant clients.
Tina – Advanced Scrambling, July 2016
Hi Rob / Huw,
Just want to say a massive thanks for last weekend, we all absolutely loved it & are just coming down off the high from the whole event & looking what we can do next.
Mark & Friends – Welsh 3000 – June 2016
Hi Huw, Rob,
Just want to say many thanks for a fantastic Self Rescue course Saturday..!!
Speaking with the guys afterwards we have nothing but positive feedback about the day – we all loved it..!!
Huge credit to Huw… Excellent structure, content and delivery. Lots learnt and all in a fun filled manor. Peachy weather too!
Huw asked for any suggestions we feel may offer improvement, but to be honest we all discussed and agreed the content & structure was perfect. The manner in which Huw introduced each of the building blocks and used in the various systems & scenarios during the morning session was excellent. To then put these into practice on the crag in the afternoon was hugely beneficial. The extended day was also very helpful – thanks to Huw for doing this.
Rob… I mentioned to Huw that we’re keen to hold another Self Rescue course later in the summer. It would be fantastic if Huw (or yourself) was available and could replicate the day for other KMC members.
Thanks Huw – great day!!
Steve. Private Guiding – Self Rescue for Climbers
Thank you for the excellent 2 days we spent with you. Your guidance was perfectly pitched for the boys abilities and as a parent I was able to fully relax. They are already pestering me for a repeat trip.
John – Private Guiding June 2016
Thank you very much for all the photos and the films – it is great to relive all the fantastic climbing and views. What a week!
Thank you for such a wonderful week up on the Cuillin ridge with superb scrambling and great views which I shall treasure! Please pass on my thanks to your great team, especially Sandy who encouraged me all week. It could not have been better! I did not expect to be able to scramble every day and experience so much of the ridge, but with the sunshine and clear weather it was impossible to stop! Elgol is a special place and the last day there was just right for me.
I have come home tired but happy! I would love to join you again.
Elspeth – Skye Scrambling – May 2016
I just wanted to thank you for an excellent learning experience I had whilst on the course the other week. I am no longer day dreaming about off trail back country travel, with the knowledge gained and lots of practice I feel confident that I can undertake a such a trip with confidence.
All the best,
Mauro – Mountain Skills – May 2016
Dear Huw and Rob,
I wanted to say thank you for providing such an outstanding week of scrambling in Snowdonia. Under your watchful eye I have gained much more confidence standing tall on all the knife-edge arêtes and narrow ledges that Snowdonia has to offer. Having climbed the best part of 15,000 feet over the course of the week, I feel privileged to have joined the ‘I survived 5 days with Huw Gilbert’ club! It always great to take on new challenges in the mountains in the company of new friends.
I will be back for more – bring on the Cuillin Ridge!
Alastair – Classic Scrambles – May 2016
Thanks to you and Huw for a great couple of days excellent scrambling.
Stunning routes and scenery, brilliant company, informative instruction, dry rock and sunshine!
Thanks again and looking forward to next months learn to lead course .
Cheers Martin. Advanced Scrambling Course – May 2016”
I wanted to say a huge thank you for the fantastic course. I still don’t know quite how you managed to coach me up the North Ridge of Tryfan, but you did, and I’m still on a high! You and Huw are clearly extremely skilled at what you do and this, coupled with your calmness, instilled confidence right from the start. I thought the whole course was run in a very professional yet really friendly manner. In short, it was totally brilliant!
I’m looking forward to more great days in the mountains this summer, armed with a new found confidence – thank you so much.
All the best,
Kate – Intro to Scrambling, May 2016
Thoroughly enjoyed it and will defiantly look to do some other courses with you.
Please send my thanks to Huw and Rob for all of their help.
Michael. Intro to Scrambling – May 2016
Thanks for the photos!
Thanks again for a very informative and enjoyable couple of days in the hills. I’ll upload my pics in the next couple of days and send you all a download link. It was great meeting everyone (Skye included)
Many thanks for the two days.
I had great time and learned enough to keep me going for years – just need to put it into practice now!
All the best,
Chris – Mountain Skills Course – May 2016
Thanks for an excellent course, new skills introduced in an informative and enjoyable fashion . My thanks to Tarquin for his company and instruction.
Time spent in the winter hills have confirmed my desire to continue and progress in this fantastic mountain environment, will be booking another course for 2017. Hope to meet up again sometime over the summer.
5 day winter skills – March 2016
Just wanted to say thanks for a great two weeks and thanks for uploading the photos. What outrageously good weather, its grey and miserable here in London. I’ll reply to all later on after uploading the ones we’ve taken. A bit of recovery time needed before we decide what we want to do next!
Tom and Laura – 5 day winter skills and 3 day winter mountaineering – March 2016
Hi Rob – We had such a brilliant time, thank you so much. It was crunch time for me on
whether ice climbing is really for me or not and it was definitely a winner,
right from the first day. The team were great and the whole group were good
company and always warmly encouraging of one another.
It takes unusual talent to engender such an environment, so thank you for
leading the trip so well. Rusty was just brilliant and matched our keen appetite
with his own enthusiasm for the climbing every single day.
We’re definitely up for other excursions, so please keep working your way
through the bucket list!
All best, Sharon
Rjukan Ice Climbing Week, Norway – Feb 2016
Just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you for yet another fantastic trip to Rjukan. As usual everything was organised brilliantly and the instruction was top notch; combined with the excellent conditions this lead to a superb trip.
Even the Tuesday morning dunking didn’t lead to a dampener to the proceedings! Thank you once again for catering to my predicament and salvaging the day!
I’d like to sign up for next year’s trip, so if that’s ok let me know and I’ll pay you a deposit straight away.
Rjukan Ice Climbing Week, Norway – Feb 2016
Many thanks for the course last week. I have learnt a lot, and finally have some structure to a decision making process in avalanche terrain.
All the best
Kev – Avalanche Avoidance – Jan 2016
Thank you once again Rob for an amazing informative week, hope to see you again very soon, Sam and Shamaila xxx
Winter Skills 5 day – Jan 2016
Hi Rob, thanks very much for a great week, enjoy the rest of your time in Scotland and catch up soon. Mike – Winter Skills 5 day – Jan 2016
Amazing week in the scottish mountains learning winter skills. Stunning scenery, first class instruction from Rob and Huw and a great group of people. Looking forward to coming back to the highlands soon to play in the snow!
Oli – Winter Skills 5 day – Jan 2016
Patagonia 2015 – Billed as ‘The Expedition of a Lifetime’; well, you undersold it big style!
It was much more than that; in fact there are not enough superlatives in the dictionary to adequately describe just how fantastic our excursion to South America really was.
Twelve intrepid trekkers (well sort of); comparative strangers at the outset, characters throughout and new friends at the end. Led by you and Huw along with local guides, Louise, in Argentina and Christian, in Chile through some of the most sensational scenery – the spires of Fitz Roy and the Torre Del Paine National Park; and natural phenomena – the Moreno and Grey Glaciers and the icebergs on Grey Lake, on the planet….to mention a few!
Together with wonderful weather from the Gods, fun by the minute, memories to treasure and organisation personified; it simply couldn’t have been any better.
Can’t thank you enough for making it all possible and great to have shared the adventure with you, ‘Matron’, Sam, Rachel, Charlie, Smally, Steve, Paul, John, Roddy and Huw.
Bob – Patagonia Expedition – November, 2015
Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed the scrambling course.
Would you pass on a big thanks to Sam whose guiding and instruction skills were excellent.
Good company, brilliant tuition, stunning scenery, blue skies, sunshine and dry rock…. the best Snowdonia had to offer… What more could you ask for?
Hope to catch up very soon.
All the best Martin.
Advanced Scrambling 9-10 July 2015.
Just wanted to send a quick thanks to yourself and Huw. The course last week was fantasic. Huw was great at supporting us and increasing our confidence and being able to go from complete scrambling beginners to the Cneifion Arete in the course of a week was great. I was also delighted to finally make it over Crib Goch having backed off once before and had a chip on my shoulder for 4 years because of it. We’ll definitely be looking at coming back next year and learning more skills.
Tom – 5 day classic scrambles – June 2015
Thanks for lasts week’s excitement. Tracey and I had an absolutely great time. I think our work colleagues are fed up hearing about our adventures.
You covered all the things we wanted to “tick off” and got us leading a route in the rain too! I don’t think I’ll ever forget the exhilaration and satisfaction of the sea cliff at South Stack on such a windy day! Yet another successful holiday where I have had the mickey taken by the two of you all week.
I’ve posted up some photos (although I have still got the videos to process).
Whilst the one of you in the storm shelter is a classic, the one of you giggling at South Stack is brilliant.
We’re already looking forward to our next marriage guidance holiday… 6 weeks to go!
Richard – 5 days private guiding – June 2015
Many thanks for the recent course. I had a thoroughly enjoyable time learning new skills with Huw.
Huw was an exceptional guide/ instructor once again and instilled a lot of confidence within me to be able to take others on trickier routes using rope techniques, route finding and judgement; I may work back up to Dolmen Ridge as a lead though. (excellent but nerve racking)
I will be sure to enroll on another course/ expedition in the future.
Once again many thanks.
Tom Chaney – Advanced Scrambling Learn to Lead June 2015
Just to say thank you for giving me such an amazing Five days climbing. I really feel I have progressed and gained in confidence, even if my body is battered! Huw took me to Angelsey today and we did three routes, ending with Shite Hawk Alley, one name I won’t forget! The weather just got better and better with not one drop of rain.
Hope you have a great weekend and already looking forward to scrambling in July.
All the best,
Julia – 5 day climbing (Private Guiding) May 2015
A HUGE thank you to @RobJohnsonMIC for this weeks ML training. Passionate, humble and very knowledgable. Highly recommended @MtnTraining ! Callum – ML Training – May 2015
Just wanted to say many thanks to you and Hugh for such an enjoyable time last week. The combination of the weather and the great scrambles made it exceptional. I feel as though I learned a lot in such a short space of time and very much appreciated your and Hugh’s encouragement and patience. Determined to give Skye a go next year so will be in touch. I was also very relieved to learn that my young friend, Rupert, is safe following the earthquake in Nepal. You may recall he was going to try a double ascent and was at the foot of the Northeast Ridge when it struck; on the Tibet side but still hit by aftershocks etc. He has had to abandon his trip but is now hoping to help with the relief effort. Just makes you realise how tenuous and unpredictable life can be, especially in the mountains!
Hopefully see you in Skye next year and thanks once again.
Mark – Classic Scrambles – April 2015
Hey Rob, thanks for the past week, as always it was fab! Please pass my thanks on to Huw too – he’s a top guy.
See you soon 🙂
Dan – Classic Scrambles – April 2015
I just wanted to say thank you for a great week, I certainly got everything out of it that I wanted to. I thought both yours and Huw’s instruction was fantastic; very professional, but at the same time it felt like we were out in the hills with a couple of mates!
Gareth – Mountaincraft – April 2015
I wanted to write and say thank you from Paul and I for a great weeks course – we both really enjoyed ourselves and felt we learnt a lot and built our confidence in the mountains significantly, which is what we were looking for.
Please pass on our thanks to Huw and Rob, and thank Rob for getting me down off Moel Siabod when I twisted my ankle! He’s a legend, and will make a great guide himself.
Best, Roisin (and Paul) Mountaincraft – April 2015
Thank you to you, Huw and Rob for making our Mountain Craft course such an enjoyable and memorable week. I am looking forward to trying out all the new skills you taught us.
I am also looking forward to meeting you and Steve again in the summer on your Iceland Trek.
Very best wishes,
Keith- Mountaincraft – April 2015
Hi Rob, Now that I am back from Snowdonia and have e-mail access, I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for an excellent Contour Navigation day on Fri, I learned a lot not only from you and the course itself but also from the quality people around me, sharing experiences and gaining useful tips was an added bonus to an excellent training day. Many thanks, Bob – Advanced Navigation Day – April 2015
Evening Rob, just landed home after a cracking day on the course today. Just wanted to say thanks very much to Huw(apologies if spelling incorrect) and yourself. To be honest I thought it would be a bit full on but I couldn’t have been further from the truth. We didn’t just learn about navigation though, we were given the opportunity to pick up tons of stuff about the environment and geology which made for a thoroughly great day.
I shall be recommending the day to as many folk as I can.
I’ll be back for more training with you if you’ll have me.
Cheers again for a brilliant day.
Al , who lives in Wigan but doesn’t come from there.
Advanced Navigation Day – April 2015
Thanks for the course this weekend. I really enjoyed it, and, despite walking most of my life, feel I have attained some additional skills that I will now adopt in the future. Don’t be surprised to see me applying for your mountain leader course at a later stage. I will now begin the 20 precursor walks.
I will also let you know how the Haute Route went and send some photos,
Mark Samuels – Mountain Skills – April 2015
Thank you for taking me on with the group at Fort William on 9th – 13th March. It was an amazing experience – one that I have always hoped for and never quite achieved. You were so supportive towards the whole group that we were able to achieve more than we had expected was possible. I particularly loved getting up on to the icy snow on Aonach Mor and using the ice axe and crampons. I am looking forward to exploring more mountains in winter next year!
Rachel sent me your film of Ben Nevis – well done! It is very exciting. It must have taken you quite a time, with climbing the Ben as well as all that filming. I have sent it on to my sons and they are very impressed! They have both climbed the north face of the Ben, one in winter.
Keep up the good work!
Elspeth Brien – Winter Skills Feb 2015
Rob, thanks for an amazing trip. I had so much fun and was pleased with progress given I’ve not strapped those crampons on since 2012.
Please thank Dave, Huw and Baggy too. The guidance from you guys and tuition were invaluable. I learnt loads and will try to get down the indoor ice wall to practice technique.
If the trip is on again next year count me in and I’ll ensure I turn up prepared, stronger and with improved technique.
Thanks again for an awesome week of ice and some great laughs !
All the best

Just a quick email to thank you for an amazing 4 days last week!! It did surpass all my expectations and I’m thinking now I’m in my office chair weather, if I was told exactly what id signed up for id of actually done it! But now I’m hooked and its boosted my confidence no end. I read the other day life doesn’t begin until your outside your comfort zone, and I sure was for a soft southerner but I loved every minute of it. I’m just frustrated now as I’m totally hooked and want to learn more! Big thanks to Huw to I got on really well with him and enjoyed the day out on the Aonach Eagach with him. Mark was a great guy to and learnt from him as well. loved it all! Can’t wait for the next instalment which should naturally be the scrambling course however I’m not sure if I can make any of the dates yet I’ll have to wait and see if I can work it, what with our Mera peak and Tibet trip.
Have a great time in Norway and say hello to Simon for me.Thanks again and hope to see you soon.
Steve – Scottish Winter Climbing – Feb 15
We just wanted to say “thanks” for an excellent weekend on the winter skills course. We both had a brilliant time. It was great to meet everybody on the course. Thanks for the great weather!!
Your passion for the mountains was obvious and your willingness to share your experience and expertise great for building our confidence to head further into the winter mountains.
We noted the link to “the mountain” TV series; the acting career looks to be going forward in leaps and bounds! Good luck with the beard.
John & Evelin Winter Skills Weekend, Jan 2015
Rob, thank you for your professionalism and absolute grace with repeat takes of climbing, clambering and hiking for the film we shot with you. Without a doubt the final product would in no way have been as good without your guidance, location sourcing and expertise. Thanks for keeping us safe. As a film production company we’d have no hesitation in recommending you for any similar ventures. All the best, Gary Wales, Producer, DirectionGroup – Snowdonia Film Safety – Jan 2015
I think you’ll have to have a career change as you were a natural!
The day was good fun and we got the results Sean was hoping for.
Thank you for being such a good sport during the day… it can be tiring being in front of those lights.
You gave as much to the shoot as any model would have. And also as you have come from an authentic angle…
I believe it was more successful.
I will follow your expeditions on line and look forward to catching you on TV in ‘The Mountain’ and of course in the Fujitsu campaign too!
Debra – www.debrahurfordbrown.com – Professional Photographer. Explorer Photo shoot – Jan 2015
Hi Rob, Huge thanks to you, I thought Friday went excellently.
I really thought you captured the expressions and ‘look’ that we were after brilliantly … as well as providing valuable input into how the make-up should look based on your ‘real life’ experiences.
Hopefully it will all be a success for the client … who knows, maybe in 6 months we’ll need to extend the campaign and do a new set of shots … but this time on location somewhere in the world, depending on where you advise! 😉
Sean – Direction Marketing Group – Explorer Photo shoot – Jan 2015
Thanks for a great weekend, learnt a lot , great fun and now have the confidence to tackle the Scottish winter, and by the way thank you for the weather,Scotland was stunning!
Ben – Winter Skills Weekend, Jan 2015
What a fantastic weekend, so enjoyable and useful. There’s snow here in the lakes too so I am hoping to get out there and practise next week!
Good luck with the beard!
Rachel Winter Skills Weekend, Jan 2015
Hi Rob –
Hope all well and your course in Tignes is going/has gone well.
Please don’t think, for a moment, that the delay in my getting this note to you has in any way diminished my memory of our stupendous expedition to the High Atlas mountains that we completed with the ‘Toubkal Gang’ a fortnight ago. The excursion had to be experienced to be believed and whilst we weren’t able to tackle Toubkal I thought the trip was perhaps, in some ways, better than had we summited given the exposure we had to such extreme snow conditions and the use of snow shoes and crampons.
As you know, other than my introduction to winter mountaineering via your Scottish skills course last January, it was my first real outing in ‘full-on’ winter conditions and the experience at altitude did not disappoint. I had a fabulous time, with a great crowd of people – Yorkshire contingent aside – which coupled with the ‘snow science’ – love the expression – sessions, snow hole building acclimatisation exercises and your and Bryn’s safety first approach ensured that there was never a moment of concern and enjoyment was the name of the game.
A couple of relaxing – and warm – nights in Marrakech was the icing – no pun intended – on the cake; my thanks know no bounds and I look forward to being with you in the mountains again soon.
Bob – Morocco 2014
Hey Rob, hope you and your family had a nice Christmas. Have you had much snow up in Snowdonia?
I know it’s almost a month late but I just wanted to email and say thank you for the Morocco trip. I thoroughly enjoyed, even though we didn’t get to summit anything. It was great to finally get some crampons on and get an axe in my hand – I can’t wait for Scotland now!
Please pass on my thanks to Bryn also.
Anyway, enjoy the rest of your Christmas break, and I’ll see you soon!
Dan – Morocco 2014
Just a quick note to say thanks for a great week, enjoyed your and Huws company as always.
Just had time to reflect on what was said and going into the week navigation and contour recognition was my weakness! And obviously showed.
Off to the lakes next week to do some practice.
The Ml inspires me to get into the hills, I just love being there, all be it when Iam struggling up the hill, note to self work on my fitness.
There will be the return of the Jedi, but this time using more than just the force!
See you in Jan, have a great Xmas and new year!
ML Assessment Nov 14
Just a short note to thank you and Huw for yet another brilliant week.
I had a great time and enjoyed every element of the assessment and was especially pleased when the time spent in the hills paid off.
Hope to see you both again sometime soon.
ML assessment Nov 2014.
Hi Rob, Huw,
Thanks again for such a superb week – a massive pleasure to learn from and spend time with you both as always.
Obviously thrilled to have got the thumbs-up from you both too. Praise really matters when it comes from people you respect.
ML Assessment Nov 14
Hi Rob – Thank you very much for an amazing couple of days, really enjoyed it and benefited from your knowledge, expertise and skills, I now know what I need to improve on.
Thank you also for your patience with me and the ‘shamaila shamaila plod’, hopefully see you on the next adventure to do more firsts and conquer more fears and heights. xxx
Shamaila – Mountain Navigation & Skills Course – Oct 2014
Hi Rob, how you doing? Enjoying your well deserved day off I hope?
I can’t really express my gratitude to you in words for the past couple of days. It was one of the best experiences of my life, right up there with being at the births of my kids!
I don’t want to sound all weird, but I somehow feel enlightened. I really can’t explain it. I feel like a new me! I can only describe it as being akin to a religous experience. I feel I have so much more confidence throughout all aspects of my life, but my legs are a bit tender, haha.
I couldn’t say this to my eldest daughter as she’d accuse me of blasphemy, but after that experience, I feel as if walking is my religion, and the mountains my church!
As I said to Kevin before I left the cafe, I sincerely cannot think of two people that I would rather have shared the experience with.
Thank you for the photos too, they put a whole new perspective on it all.
I’ll definitely keep in touch (not in a stalkery way) although I kept the signed copy of the scrambling book under my pillow last night………. (didn’t really)………. and I look forward to booking myself on another course when I can.
Steve – Intro to Scrambling – October 2014
p.s. say hi to Skye from me. She’s gorgeous!
Many thanks for our trip to Slovenia and for making my first alpine sortie
so enjoyable. What a beautiful country!!
Thanks Richard and Tracey for the compilation of photo’s and you Rob for yours which I
Thanks Barry for looking after me!
Thanks especially to you Rob for organising the trip and your guidance during it. I was really
made up to sample some via ferrata and the whole experience surpassed my expectations.
All the best
Bill – Scrambling in Slovenia, September 2014
What a brilliant week!!
I think Rich said that it was a trip of “extremes” and there is no argument there….
Hot, 1,500m, climbs through forest, along cliff faces, scrambles, beautiful scenery, high level plateaus and scintillating summits. Amazing descents along zig-zag paths, surrounded by endless valleys and Dwarf Pine terraces.
The “Mountain huts” and hut living. Wholesome food, Dremel resistant Sausage, hearty breakfasts and no loitering in the toilet.
Cold, snow covered, freezing paths.
Soft beds, clean sheets and relaxing shower. Followed by Gourmet food and fine wine.
But, best of all was the company!!
Thanks for the company and the laughs. And, of course, Rob for your Skills, Judgement and Expertise.
See you all again soon.
Barry- Scrambling in Slovenia, September 2014
Hi Rob – Many thanks for the fantastic opportunity to test run your Slovenian Trip. Tracey and I had a superb time. Slovenia was beautiful and the trekking was better than we could have dreamed. The scrambling from the overnight hut to the summit will be very hard to beat! Once again, your relaxed and boundless enthusiasm ensured that we had an unforgettable holiday.
Of course finishing the holiday with two exquisite multiple-course meals in the space of 6 hours in a superb hotel didn’t taint the holiday at all!!! 😉
All in all a huge success – Richard & Tracy
Scrambling in Slovenia, September 2014
Had a great couple of days’ scrambling on Thursday and Friday with Bryn. It has given me a perspective on what is involved in grade 2 and 3 scrambles and plenty to ponder. I found the Dolmen Ridge hard work (not fit and flexible enough!) but seemed to find my rhythm a bit more on Cneifion Arete/North West Face. Good company in Bryn and John (on the first day) and good instruction from Bryn made it enjoyable as well as tiring. Please pass on my thanks to Bryn.
All the best, Andy – Advanced Scrambling – Sept 2014
Hey Rob, how’s it going?
How were the Julian Alps? You going back next year?
Sorry it’s taken me a while to get in touch, I meant to email you sooner. Just wanted to say thanks for a great trip – I had an amazing time and so did the old man (although it took him over a week to stop moaning about his knees)! Going back to work on the Monday upset me.
Anyway, onto the next trip I suppose! Can’t wait for Morocco. If it’s anywhere near as good as the Swiss 3000’s it’s going to be awesome.
I would also like to take the last place you have on the Scottish Winter Mountaineering in May.
Also, as mentioned I’d like to join you for some scrambling in Skye followed by some climbing on the sea stacks. Let me know your thoughts and we can get something planned 🙂
Anyway, hope all is well.
Swiss 3000’s week – August 2014
Many thanks, brilliant photos and we had a truly memorable time, with such a lovely group of people. And thanks so much for your calm and friendly leadership. I’m looking forward to booking our next trip (still trying to talk Steve into it J).
Thanks again Rob, it was amazing.
Sarah and Steve.
Swiss 3000’s week – August 2014
Hi Rob – Thank you, it was a great week and perfect prep for MB. And man what a week we had with Twid, despite all odds the summit happened – it was perfect.
Your hut choice, summit choice and help for Bec etc was all perfect and made for. Great week. Thanks, Luke – Swiss 3000’s week – August 2014
Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed the week in the Alps – it was an experience I’ll never forget. The trekking, scenery and company were great. The photos were amazing – it’s incredible to think we saw it all first hand.
Hope your knees are calming down – mine are after 6 days. Think I’m ready to book another trip now so don’t count me out of things yet!
Once again, thanks for everything.
Swiss 3000’s week – August 2014
Hi Rob, Just a quick email to say a big thank you for your clear and professional instruction on the lead to lead scramble course last week.
It was a great balance of learning and fun which will stand me in good stead for my forthcoming alpine trip and other future adventures.
Cheers – Matt – Advanced Scrambling Learn to Lead – July 2014
Just to say thanks for a brilliant day of private guiding, the level for both of us was just right, not too easy and definitely hard enough to challenge our present skills set ( or lack of ! ) You have given both myself & Kestas a renewed determination to crack on with our rock climbing endeavours now and we hope to return to train with you again soon. Again, brilliant session, loved it. Kind Regards
John Aldcroft & Kestas Blazonis – Private Guiding – July 2014
Dear Rob and Huw
I wanted to thank you both for the course. Having trudged, slightly heavy-hearted and slightly delayed, back to London, I have managed to recover from the pains, strains and jitters of the week and am now left with happy memories, a real feeling of achievement and somewhat bruised shins!
I wanted to join the course as a general improvement of my mountain skills, but I have come away with more than that; I have a new sense of confidence, a love of scrambling and an understanding of my shortcomings that I can work on. And I did all that in an incredibly beautiful setting with some lovely people. The week was great, including the great weather that you laid on for us, so thank you for everything. You can be quite sure that I will be back for more in future.
Be seeing you.
From a tragically flat London…!
Lucinda – 5 day navigation & scrambling – June 2014
Hi Rob just wanted to thank you and Huw for being so patient with my fear of heights really enjoyed the course and can’t wait to put my new skills into practise and we will be I touch regarding future courses
Thanks for the boots pal
Tommy 5 day navigation & scrambling – June 2014
Hi Rob, Had a great week, learnt lots and will be putting some of this knowledge into practice in the lakes and preparing for the Welsh 3000. Crib coch will be conquered!! ))
Speak soon pal, Steve – 5 day navigation & scrambling – June 2014
Thanks again for a brilliant day – I’m still grinning from ear to ear. The photos on your blog look great, too.
That odd white flower was indeed New Zealand Willowherb (score 1 point to me) . Never seen it in flower before.
As always, it was great to see you
All the best, Roddy Private Guiding – June 2014
Hello mate, I’ve already delegated the driving responsibilities for the day 🙂 Anyway thanks again for today, thoroughly enjoyed myself as always, despite my language suggesting otherwise haha.
See you next month and enjoy yourself in Glencoe next week, that’s a lovely thing to be able to do.
John – Private Guiding – June 2014
In May 2014 the online retailer “Simply Hike” paid for one of their employees, Shaun, to join our Mountaincraft course. He then wrote an independant review of the course on the company blog. You can read it here.
Hi Rob, Just a quick note to say thank you for a tremendous week in Skye. As ever you and the team provided first class guiding and instruction, all delivered with great spirit and good humour. I look forward to a return to Skye just as soon as I’ve re-grown the layers of skin stripped from my fingertips by that wonderful Cuillin gabbro! Many thanks, Shae. Skye Scrambling – May 2014
Just to say a big thank you for such a brilliant week, scrambling on Skye. I don’t think I have ever felt quite such a sense of achievement at having survived it!! The company was excellent too and they were very patient! Please say thanks to all the Guides, who manage to make hard labour such fun! Julia – Skye Scrambling – May 2014
From Facebook: ML course was awesome and a very high level of instruction from Rob and Huw who were willing to go the extra mile, give advice and answer literally hundreds of questions. highly recommended.
Number 1 rule = LOOK COOL!!!
David – ML Training May 2014
What a superb day yesterday, a stunning day out. We had amazing weather after a dodgy forecast and that route really does take some beating. It was great fun and I was so much better than when I attempted the 3000ers previously. I am hopeful that it may be third time lucky! Already contemplating a rematch.
Thanks again for a really brilliant day.
Jude – Welsh 3000 Challenge – April 2014
Thanks for the weekend of Navigation & Hill Skills. I learnt so much during the two days and it was all in the good company of other like minded people. The success of the weekend was in most part down to our instructor Huw. His relaxed and friendly style combined with his knowledge ensured that we were onto a winner.
I look forward to doing further courses with you in the future.
Steve Fong. Mountain Skills Course, April 2014
There are probably not enough superlatives to describe my time with you on our ‘Winter Mountaineering Course’ I brought the sun from Yorkshire and a chest infection ! Scotland provided some amazing mountains and you, Huw and Dave brought humour, skills, knowledge and masses of patience and encouragement. Even on one lung this was without doubt one of the most challenging but rewarding and enjoyable weeks of my life. Great to meet like minded people who want to learn skills from a pro like yourself. Once again thanks for your patience, encouragement and sense of humour. I am already looking forward to booking on another course ASAP.
Winter Mountaineering Course March 2014
Thanks for the pictures and thanks for a great week. Myself & Mick had a really enjoyable and fun time. The three days we had in the mountains were more than we could of expected with great guides and great people. I would also like to thank yourself & Huw for being great company and for having patience with me & Mick. We will hopefully see you next winter in Scotland again if you & Huw would put up with us again.
Many Thanks & regards, Steve – Winter Mountaineering, March 2014
Thank you so much for such an amazing time in Scotland. How lucky were we to sneak in those fantastic winter days climbing? Just such outrageous fun, mixed with the right amount of challenge.
Thank you for stunning days out. I am on a high from what we did. Roll on next winter.
Scottish Winter Climbing, March 2014
Thanks for the photos and even more so for such a cracking week! We haven’t stopped grinning since we got home – we were hoping to learn new skills and to stretch ourselves in a winter environment, but I don’t think either of us had anticipated having so much fun in the process! Your technical skills speak for themselves, but you also have a special talent for creating a warm, inclusive culture in the team – it really did feel like a bunch of mates going for a great walk, despite the fact that we were all strangers to begin with! That’s something that can’t be taught – I suspect it has a lot to do with your evident passion for what you do and a complete lack of ego. You’re one of the few people out there making a living doing something you truly love – how many of us get to do that?!
We’re looking forward to doing a scrambling course with you.
All the best,
Natalie & Mike. Winter Skills Week, March 2014
Hi Rob, I just wanted to say thanks as well for the whole weekend, it was absolutely brilliant, loved every minute of it. you are an awesome guide – we were all saying afterward that you’re great – really knowledgeable and experienced, but totally down to earth and easy to get on with. (and a lot less intimidating than that scary snow hole dude) (wouldn’t want to meet him down a dark mountain ally.. gully).. so, thank you again for an awesome weekend.. i’ll be definitely intending to book another course in the near future.
also.. fyi.. I did try and make a solo ascent of The big Ben nevis on Monday.. on my todd. I went through all the weather reports and avalance reports in the morning, and it all looked good.. . however when I got about halfway up at around 700m, and at a point where the path crossed the red burn, I had to turn back.. you may be able to tell from the attached photo (img6846)- it was a major avalanche risk. the snow was knee deep, and I was at risk from it either giving way below me and sliding me into the gully/burn or from the overhanging cornices above.. you can actually see in the photo wp201403 that a couple of people had decided to go straight up the gully vertically, instead of following the path to the right and into the deep snow.. I chatted to one guy who’d made it up that way who said it was not too bad getting up, but he encountered a couple of white outs while on the summit plateau.. im, glad I didn’t head up there, I think I need to do one of rob’s navigational courses before im confident to navigate in a white out on top of the ben!
anyway, thanks again Rob for a brilliant weekend. and thanks to everyone else, I got on really well with all of you.. and now im sat at home wishing I was still in bloody fort William! I even wore my goggles in the lounge last night so I could pretend I was still on the mountain!
oh. that reminds me. after I turned back from the red burn section on ben nevis, I then dug my own snow hole in some deep snow near the tarn up there. pretty good job I did I reckon. just with my axe ‘n that. just about big enough for two. had my lunch in it and everything..
Ben – Winter Skills Weekend, March 2014
Dear Rob and Kate
Thank you very much for organising and delivering a great two days on the Winter Hills weekend course.
I definitely will be booking on the week long course, and keen to do one of the scrambling courses.
Look forward to working with you again.
Dhush – Scottish Winter Skills Weekend, March 2014
Hi Rob, firstly, massive thanks for arranging and ensuring the most wonderful week in Norway, full of fun and amazing ice climbing. I had not dreamed of doing such stuff, it was totally brilliant, the most fantastic sense of achievement every day.
Please thank Huw and Dave for me. They were great, the three of you making a dream, who offered encouragement and challenge in exactly the right quantities at the right times. I really enjoyed the support from the group, which made it a very fun and friendly trip. These are magic ingredients.
When I get to work tomorrow I will sort out booking for the 3000ers in April (tell Andy I need his top training tips) and Norway next February.
Finally, I am so jealous of people booked on your Skye trip. Should you get a cancellation, you’d be pushing at an open door…..
Thanks again, Rob. Another Expedition Guide triumph.
Jude – Rjukan Ice Climbing – Feb 2014
Just a quick message to you and the team to say thank you for a superb week’s climbing and fun in Norway. It exceeded all expectations and I learned so much. It was great how you, Dave and Huw were able to cater for everyone’s differing aspirations and provide the arena in which we could push and challenge ourselves towards greater achievements. I’m not surprised that places for next year’s trip are being snapped up like hot cakes (Gutrot anyone?!).
Shae. Rjukan Ice Climbing – Feb 2014
Hi Rob, Just a quick message to say a massive thanks for a great course. I learnt so much over the two days and Bryn treated us to an excellent day out on the Sunday. I will definitely be returning to Glen Coe to do the same route in both winter and summer. A fantastic course and many thanks again. Keep up the great work.
Winter skills weekend – February 2014
Many thanks for the last weekend. Tom, Rob and I thoroughly enjoyed it, we learned a lot more than we imagined and were very impressed with the whole experience.
As well as the technical skills with ice axe and crampons the main thing we got out of it is the knowledge of how to go about approaching and planning a winter’s day in the hills safely.
Thanks also to Bryn for a great day on Sunday, it was perfect. Fantastic to gain new skills and knowledge (who knew snow could be so interesting? 😉 ) and have so much fun
We’ll be out in Snowdonia over the next few weeks to put skills into practice!
Alan, Winter Skills Weekend, Feb 2014
Hi Rob, We just wanted to thank you for a really great weekend. The two days more than met our expectations of all the things we thought we would learn, but additionally taught us a wealth of things we were not even expecting! It was a very well planned weekend and we had a great summit today whilst being able to put into perspective all the things taught yesterday.
The weekend has helped us on many levels. Its our first step of winter climbing, our first step with you, but also all the relevance towards snow, weather, terrain and avalanche conditions for off piste skiing are a great insight.
You really have given us a love for Scotland, its our newfound secret playground!! Brin was really great today Though he did organise better weather than you especially for our summit 😉
Thank you for a truely great experience, sadly my Go Pro was a no go today so i really look forward to seeing Brins pics when they come through.
We hope you have a fun and safe trip to Norway
Luke & Bex – Winter Skills Weekend, Feb 2014
I just wanted to say a big thank you for a really great few days – I’ve had a fantastic time and learnt a great deal, and I’m very impressed that you managed to get us out three days running despite the weather. I really appreciate all the time, effort and patience that has obviously gone into this, and you (and Huw) make great company too, which is even better! It has been a lot of fun, and I will be back… Please pass on my thanks to Huw too, and I hope you have fun tomorrow in the Vallee Vert…
I did eventually get out of Glen Coe, after 2 hrs queuing and a very snowy crawl up the hill. I got out just before the road was closed again, so I was very lucky. That does mean I’m working rather than skiing tomorrow, though…
Take care, and see you next month!
Nina , Winter Mountaineering – Feb 2014
Hi Rob – Do please forgive my delay in getting back to you since saying cheerio in in Glencoe a week last Sunday. The passage of time has in no way dimmed the unbelievable pleasure I derived from you course. I enjoyed every minute of it, learnt so much and generally re-kindled my love of the hills especially when my winter activities had always been restricted to low level paths. That was until I joined you and a fine bunch of like-minded guys for our Saturday training day and our outing on the Sunday when we summited – my first winter ascent of anything – Buachaille Etive Beag in Glencoe which was simply magic. I merely wanted to record my thanks for the weekend and indeed your patience as I practised with varying degrees of success the ice axe arrest techniques. I appreciate there is more rolling around the snow to do before I have the thumbs up from you. Fear not I be back for more of the same! Your overall regard for safety and the professionalism with which you imparted these new skills was reassuring and easily absorbed. This added no end to the enjoyment of being in the outdoors in winter conditions and for that I thank you again.
For now, Rob, best regards.
Bob, Winter Skills Weekend Jan 2014
Hello Rob … thank you! for a great couple of days, I enjoyed every minute of it and might have to add winter walking to my list of hobbies, great to see the photos of the amazing day we had yesterday, I was just sorry to race off afterwards but was (very) afraid of temperatures dropping while I was still on that windy road! I hope you have good weather for your day off tomorrow … Karin Mountain Navigation and Hill Skills – Nov 2013
Hi Rob, Many thanks for the certificate and photos and thanks for the course. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it really helped to consolidate many of thre bits and pieces that I’ve picked up over the years. I’ll be passing on as much as I can to some of my colleagues at Cerdded Conwy Walks. If poss, I’d like to do the Advanced Nav course next year – might try to organise that as my Christmas present! I’ll get in touch with you about that as soon as I can. Hwyl, Peter Mountain Navigation and Hill Skills – Nov 2013
Hi Rob, Great course yesterday. I went out this morning and repeated the route but this time with the full OS map. What a difference in just the confidence factor.
I have to say the course has added a whole new dimension to my navigation abilities, almost the missing piece!
I don’t think the Jedi need to worry yet but I have them in my sights!
Great stuff. Best regards, Barry.
Advanced Navigation, Oct 2013
Rob, Thanks for the course Rob. It was valuable to me to refresh skills that I have not been making much use of down in the SW. I enjoyed it and was very pleased to meet you and Skye. Having the dog with us certainly enhanced the experience for me! Thank you too for the photos (my Mother will be pleased to see them as I have few pictures with me in). I’m sure that I shall not leave it 6 years before returning to the mountains. You have given me lots of ideas and things to work towards, thank you. With best wishes, Nigel. Mountaincraft Oct 2013
Hi Rob, Thank you very much for the the last 4 year,s of tuition / guidance and most of all friendship.
I have enjoyed every part of it from winter skills to the Isle of Skye to ice climbing in Scotland & Norway and most recently the Picos . But most of all to the top of Island Peak ( LIVING THE DREAM!).I’ve met so fantastic people along the way & seen some fantastic places. Thank you very much Martin

ML Assessment – Aug 2013
Just wanted to thank you again for this week Rob, it’s been absolutely brilliant and learned a great deal. Thought the delivery of the training was top draw.
Ill be happy to recommend you to others.
Take care, hopefully see you again soon.
Wayne, ML Training – July 2013
Hi Rob, Thank you again for a really amazing week and my very first multi-pitch scramble, woohoo! The world looks very different now 🙂 I hope to join you for the learn to lead course at some point. Totally hooked now.
And thanks for the pictures, they all look fab. Please could you also pass my thanks to Paul again. He’s been absolutely fantastic and really looked after me and Tom on the last 2 days. Hope the weather stays warm for you. All the best, Mags – Classic Scrambles week July 2013
I’ve been meaning to drop you a line to say how fantastic the navigation course with Alec was. Both myself and my son Zach said it was the best thing we had done in ages. Alec was fantastic and was full of great advice as well as teaching us how to navigate. He was also very supportive and patient with me while I was being pathetic trying to step across the waterfall (it’s so embarrassing looking back now!)
I will definitely be recommending you to my clients and friends and hopefully if I can overcome my irrational fear of steep drops maybe I can come back and do something else too.
Many thanks once again, Sam – Navigation & Hill Skills, July 2013
Hi Rob, Just wanted to drop you a quick note thanking you for a great day yesterday. Spent most of today, day dreaming at my desk, wishing I was back climbing in the sunshine. Anyway thanks again, John – Private Guiding – July 2013
Hi Rob, I’ve been meaning to drop you a line to thank you & say how much I enjoyed the mountain navigation course on 2/3 May.
I was the least experienced of the group but really enjoyed the experience, & will almost certainly come on your scrambling course. Cheers. Dave. Navigation & Hill Skills May 2013
Hi Rob, I got the photo’s you posted in drop box, cheers for that. I must say that I think you ran a great course. Qualifying was my first goal but I did come with an open mind to learn new skills and I feel that I’ve achieved that as well. I have gained valuable information off both you and Paul so I thank you for that.
Thanks again. Regards. Pete. ML Assessment, May 2013
Hi Rob, Just a short note to say many thanks for the inspiring navigation course that you ran last week. I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the course and in addition the feeling of achievement after navigating a route safely off the summit of Glyder Fach in low visibility was something else. A great couple of days that will live long in the memory; looking forward to the next course! Best wishes,
Navigation & Hill Skills May 2013
Hi Rob, I thoroughly enjoyed the course and both you and Paul were excellent coaches. It was good to have such good weather on day one to cover the basics and then get an opportunity to use them in less favourable conditions on the Glyders. Rob, Dave, Richard and I are planning to meet soon in Snowdonia for a walk and some Navigation practise.
Thanks again and hope to see you again. Say hello to Skye.
John Navigation & Hill Skills May 2013
Just a short note to thank you for an excellent trip, great fun. I am completely enthused for this to be a big climbing year, having got off to such a great start. I don’t know how Alec managed it but he had me doing things I am rather surprised at. Fantastic.
We would love a return trip and your suggested November dates are good.
Maybe we’ll see you around. Whilst I am still feeling the confidence from Spain I need to get to the wall and have another bash at some leading – never thought I would say such a thing!
Thanks again for the trip, I’m still smiling.
– Costa Blanca Climbing Weekend April 2013
Just a quick line to thank you for last week. I really enjoyed it and whilst it was a learning curve, it felt like a week on the hills with a few pals….. perfect!
Just so you know, I can now do a perfect overhand knot (practiced on Friday night!) and have bought a lime green Jet Boil and a scrambling book for the Dark Peak! Trangia, what trangia.
Have a good week and stay safe – Richard. ML Training April 2013
Afternoon Rob, Hard to go back to work after such a great time last week! Thanks for everything and I look forward to coming on another course in the future. Best regards, Alistair Winter Skills week, March 2013
Hi Rob – Alex here, just invested in an exercise bike and some personal training . Definitely enjoyed the Glissade descent – highlight of my life as well as week – working on a short video – thinking Blur for the music – will send you copy in a week. Rob – you are a top bloke and I thank you again my friend. Alex” Winter Skills week, March 2013
Thanks Rob, I thoroughly enjoyed the course and learnt a lot. Your knowledge and instruction were absolutely first rate and I’d have no hesitation in recommending your courses to others looking to develop skills and have fun in the mountains. I will be aiming to put my new skills into practise later this winter and look forward to joining you on another course soon.
All the best, Mark. Winter Skills Weekend. March 2013
Thanks for a great week – WILL be going again.

If you are ever considering doing a trek in the Pyrenees, let us know.
Thanks again John – Norway Snowshoe Trip, Feb 2013
I would just like to say many, many thanks for the fantastic week in Scotland on the winter skills course, even if the snow was a little sparse on the ground at the time! As usual I had a great time , learning new skills and building my confidence and experience by putting them into practice in such a stunning location. As ever, I really appreciated the time and care you put in to make sure everything was just right for everyone each day – perfect again! I look forward to another opportunity to learn from you some more… Keith – Winter Skills week, Jan 2013
Hi Rob, I am so grateful for your tuition/guidance/company in the hills last week, me & rich had a belter of a week, a cracking start to the year, just have to maintain the momentum now & hone our skills! Been out with James & Charlie over Striding Edge last week, we’ll be over to wales in the next week or so I reckon. Thanks again. Al – Winter Skills week, Jan 2013
Hi Rob, just a quick message to thank you for a great trip to the Atlas mountains.
Thanks also to everyone who was involved in looking after us and keeping us safe and well, especially to Paul also. Once again, you managed to arrange the perfect weather, you seem to be getting pretty good at that now, well at least on the trips I have with you, he he. Hope you and your family had a good christmas and every bit of good fortunes for the New Year too. Oh , n less of this atrocious wet weather. Stay safe n well – Ed – Toubkal Dec 2012
Hi Rob, I just wanted to drop you a quick email to say thank you for a great week on the ML assessment. I really enjoyed it looking back now and it will make for some great memories. Matt – ML Assessment – November 2012
Hi Rob – cheers for an amazingly awesome trip. Can honestly say I enjoyed every minute, even when my lungs were screaming to stop my head internally combusting and my tongue stuck dry to the roof of my mouth! Fantastic!! Life is for living – Simon, Island Peak 2012
Hi Rob, thank you very much for an amazing trip. I really enjoyed the company, its nice to complete your dreams with friends. – Martin – Island Peak 2012
Hi Rob, Thank you for a great trip, Ii had the time of my life, a real experience with great people to share it with, its now that im home that I realise what a good time I had. I’m already thinking about what can I do next. If you think of anything let me know! Thanks again, John – Island Peak 2012
Hi Rob, I just wanted to say thank you so much for a fantastic week of climbing. I had a great time, learnt loads and loved every minute (even in a strange way the bits that I was rather scared). I really appreciated your patience and knowledge; and also for pushing Jon and I onto more challenging ground. Ryan – 5 day learn to lead – September 2012
Hi Rob, thanks for a great course, very informative but in a relaxed atmosphere that’s given me new skills & honed in some existing ones as well. Paul – ML Training August 2012
Hi Rob, Thanks again for being so brilliant, I really enjoyed the course and learnt so much over the 6 days! Cheers, Sarah ML Training August 2012
Hi Rob – Thanks to your navigation course I led my first group up Cwm Dulyn to the Nantlle Ridge for Clwb Dringo Porthmadog. Working out my route the previous week the cloud base droped to bellow 400 mtrs on Craig Cwm Silyn and I had to navigate off the hill. It’s the best £135 I’ve ever spent. Thanks again Rob.
All the best,
Tecwyn – Navigation & Hill Skills – July 2012
Hi Rob, The night before joining your course I couldn’t sleep with excitement and so it had a lot to live up to. Thankfully it did and more. I have been wonderfully inspired and feel that my confidence has grown tremendously. I am now ready to tackle my dreams of Crib Goch and other similar places under my own steam. That scramble up the waterfall will stay with me for a long time as I recall my inner child squealing with delight! Thanks once again. I am so excited about the possibility of Morocco that once again I couldn’t sleep on this morning! Although I can’t possibly maintain this level for the next 6 months! Look forward to hearing from you.Take care, Esther – Intro to scrambling June 2012
Hi Rob, Well, back in the office after a really spectacular week is a real come down.
There seemed to be one word that was repeated almost daily during the week, after Sgurr Banachdich, Inn Pinn, Coire Lagan, The Cioch, Clach Glas, Pinnacle Ridge and, of course, River Dipping in our “Boxers” AWESOME! Thanks to all of you for Great Instruction, Great Guiding and a good dose of “get on and do it”. Hope to see you all soon. Best regards, Barry – Skye Scrambling 2012
Hi Rob Thanks for the absolutely brilliant week – great company, top class instruction from you, Alec and Sandy, amazing weather, and of course all those fantastic routes. Makes me want to get fitter and get back up there asap. But hopefully not quite so warm next time… Robin – Skye Scrambling 2012
Morning Rob. Just like to say a big thank you for yesterdays Welsh 3000’s. The guys did a cracking job leading the way in such awful weather and having you at the end of each stage with our spare dry socks was heaven! What next…?????
Simon, Welsh 3000 Challenge May 2012
Hi Rob, Just to say thank you very much for an incredible week. I cannot believe everything we have climbed, and climbed happily, without any scared squeaking. It feels great! A big thank you again. Jude & Sue – Private Guiding – May 2012
Hi Rob, Thank you very much for the certificate and the photos!
I REALLY had a great time at your course in Snowdonia, thanks a lot for that!!!
I registered at the MLTE office and I really hope to find the time to do my quality days on the mountains to be able to do the ML training. All the best Dario Navigation & Hill Skills April 2012
Hi Rob, Just a short note to thank you for the excellent 2 days scrambling on the recent Advanced Scrambling course. As ever, under your leadership and guidance it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and the highlight was – of course – the ascent of the Cneifion Arete, which was both spicy and awesome! The great weather also played its’ part and I’m wondering how different the second day would have been if the course had been scheduled for this week 🙂 There are many of your courses I still want to join – pity work etc always gets in the way of having fun.
Anyway, I’m sure we’ll meet again in the near future. Many thanks again for such a great experience… Best regards Keith – Advanced Scrambling March 2012
Hi Rob, We had a really great time on the Winter Skills course and as usual, don’t really remember most of any bad weather. So you did a great job keeping us safe, informed and entertained – Thanks very much. Cheers, Rob Winter Skills 5 day course Jan 2012
Hi Rob, Just a note to thank you for the great weekend . It was hard to explain to my colleagues that I’d had fun sliding headfirst into snow in the cold and wind but it was excellent. Blackburn is a bit of an anti climax after Glen Coe. Hope to see you again soon- I’m fairly often in Wales and Siomon and I are planning to get out there in the next couple of weeks – Ian – Winter Skills weekend Jan 2012
Again many thanks for a good session in the mountains. How do you always arrange such good weather and good company?
I am back to work with this positive mind set you passed on.
Have a good winter.
All the best Ric – Winter Skills weekend Jan 2012
Take careHi Rob – I just wanted to drop you a quick email to say thanks for running such a great couple of days last week. The course structure was perfect for me, and your flexibility and knowledge of the local area was invaluable when the weather turned out to be just too rough! When I looked back at the end of each day I realised just how much knowledge and just as importantly, how much confidence I had gained. With these skills in my pocket I’ll be heading out on my own routes over the next few months, consolidating what I’ve learned, and I hope to see you on another course before too long. With very best regards Mike- Navigation & Hill Skills Dec 2011
Hi Rob, Just to say thanks again for a great couple of days scrambling in Snowdonia last week. The course was pitched at just the right level, challenging without being being too hard. Also great fun, which is the point. Been looking at your blog, great photos. I was sorry to hear about Skye’s injury and I hope she/he recovers very soon. I’ll make a donation to SARDA via the site and decide when I can come scrambling again soon. Hope you and your family have a great Christmas and a happy and successful New Year. Best wishes, John – Advanced Scrambling Dec 2011
Hope all is well. Just a quick note to thank you again for the advanced scambling couple of days. It has given me a taste of the outdoors again and reminded me what I have been missing for the past few years and how much I enjoy being in the mountains. The course really gave me the confidence to go out on grade 2/3s under my own steam. Hopefully see you in the not too distant future. Kind Regards, Kristian Evans, Advanced Scrambling Learn to Lead – Nov 2011
Just a quick note to thank you for an enjoyable couple of days on the intro to scrambling course last week – I may not have looked as though I was enjoying it some of the time, but I really do find the days out in the mountains very therapeutic, and your invaluable tips and instruction will greatly help my confidence to venture out in the future. Thanks again – have a good winter in the hills, and I will perhaps be in touch early next year to arrange a private guiding day for Lorraine and myself – after showing her the pictures of last week’s course, I think she might like to try a short scramble somewhere, but perhaps nothing too intensive such as the whole routes we were covering last week. Peter – Intro to Scrambling – November 2011
The expedition to high the Atlas Mountains of Morocco was a truly awe-inspiring experience, made all the more so by the excellent company and leadership of Rob, Paul and my fellow ‘mountaineers’. If spectacular landscapes, contrasting climate, varied climbing/scrambling and downright good fun excites you, then this is an expedition I would wholeheartedly recommend! – Steve, Toubkal October 2011
Having fnally found a computer to use in Orkney, I hope you all got got home at a more reasonable hour than me! I had a fantastic time with all of you, even when the weather didn’t cooperate. 🙂 The mountains and high passes in the Atlas were like nothing I’d ever seen before and I’ll remember them for a long time to come, the views from the summits were something else. Coming down to Marrakech after the tranquility of the hut was something of a culture shock but it was the perfect way to end the week (after all, there were wizard suits needing to be bought!) A fantastic trip and I hope to see you all again for future adventures.
Slainte mor! Naomi – Toubkal October 2011
Hi Rob – A dull Preston does not compare to the glory of the mountains or the manic Marrakech. When I booked this trek, It was with a view to giving me something to look forward to and so expectations were high. These expectations were met and far exceeded. The trek was fantastic, with stunning scenery and occasional solitude which allowed me to re-connect with the outdoors again. The company was great, with all of us getting along and supporting each other throughout the week. (despite my snoring). The accommodation and the people were superb. There are many memories etc that never made it to camera, such as the markets and aromas of Marrakech which will live with me for a long time. I now also have a different attitude to bread!!
Thanks for making it a more than memorable experience. Cheers,
Vic – Toubkal, October 2011
I’ve been in some groups in the mountains in my time. To date, that was the best & most balanced group I’ve been in: woo hoo. What is life if not for sharing memories. Thanks to all for the company n good cheer & thanks Rob for the organisation. My care all & play on safely. Mikey – Toubkal October 2011
Rob,Just to say I had an absolutely fantastic time over the last couple of days, learnt tonnes, some great banter and even the Welsh weather didn’t dampen things, well not metaphorically anyhow!! Thanks again and see you the next time! John – Advanced Scrambling October 2011
Many thanks for a fantastic day of scrambling. We have enjoyed it very much and we have both learned a lot. Although I initially felt a bit nervous (compounded by being stuck in Manchester traffic for 4 hours), your relaxed and confident leadership style helped me to feel at ease almost immediately. It has certainly boosted my confidence and we both feel inspired to do more and gain more experience. The most valuable learning for me was descending Seniors Gully.. and not being completely freaked out by looking over the edge. I usually avoid looking down. It was good to see you again and we are already thinking about doing a next course… maybe the winter skills. We are home now and Cassie is happy and asleep in her bed…and all we are thinking about is heading back to the Welsh mountains. Take care and thanks again, Amelia and Gael – Private Guiding – October 2011
Hi Rob, I was able to use my new skills last weekend during a break with my walking mates. In very wet conditions they were not at all happy when faced with with what they saw as some scary scrambling. However using my experience from the course I logically assessed the problem, realised it was well within our ability and demonstrated how it could be done. The whole group including a vertigo sufferer followed me over and were most impressed. It made our day as we were able to complete a great ridge walk rather than turn back. To be able to do this was one of the main reasons for completing the course so my thanks to you and Alec for helping me achieve this. Finally thanks for the photos. Best wishes John – Intro to Scrambling Sept 2011
Hi Rob, It was a great day out today, thank you very much indeed. I really enjoyed it. Quite tough at times, and I just couldn’t keep up with Simon and Will (this time!) but I feel very pleased with my efforts. Alec and Jim were excellent, giving a bit of encouragement when it was needed. Don’t think I’ll be doing the third stage tomorrow, but I will definitely be trying to get Sue interested in doing it sometime. Thanks very much again. – Jude – Welsh 3000 Challenge, September 2011
We have had a fantastic weekend with Rob, Gael, Emma and Gavin plus dogs! I booked the course for Wayne and Maisy, so that they could enjoy their time in the mountains with confidence, and thats is what we have all come away with. Rob and Gael gave us all so much help, information and encouragement. On a personal level, we both gained so much from learning to read Maisy`s body language, and now feel we could almost be one step ahead of the little monkey!! Thanks to you both for such a fun & informative weekend. Wayne, Pam and Maisy. Mountain Dog Training Course – August 2011
Hi Rob,Just to say thank you very much for a great day out today. We’re really pleased with what we did; nothing beats being on the rock and we are definitely up for more. Five days out and about with you next year sounds like a wonderful plan so I am about to look at my annual leave and your diary of commitments and see what plot I can hatch! Thank you again. Jude (and Sue.)Private Guiding August 2011
Hi Rob, Thanks again for a fantastic couple of days – It was great to see you again! I felt we crammed a lot into the two days, despite the grim weather on Tuesday morning, and I’m really feeling the benefit from the movement skills and scrambling ‘refreshers’.I need to sort out my diary and see if the Jan winter skills week will fit. I’ll be in touch soon. Roddy – Private Guiding August 2011
Hi Rob, Thanks for a great weekend although slightly wet. We both loved the course. I think you wore Emma and the dogs out, they slept all the way home on Sunday.
We both found it very beneficial working with Gael and it helped us to understand some of Dudleys problems. As Gael lives in Manchester and we are in Cheshire we were hoping she could continue to help with Dudley and whether you could forward this email on to allow her to make contact with us if she wants too. Best Regards Gav – Mountain Dog Training Course – August 2011
Hi Rob – We hope you are well. Thanks for a fantastic experience and we are already discussing our next adventure! My preference is for the grade 3 you showed us on the Snowdon horseshoe, under your guidance of course! Look forward to seeing you again in the not too distant future and hope the mountaineering is good – Mark and Dave, Advanced Scrambling June 2011
Hi Rob- Cheers for a brilliant weekend of scrambling. We’re clearly so impressed
with the course that Nome and I have decided to book onto a Winter Skills
Course next March with you! (Actions speak louder than words eh!) Intro to Scrambling June 11
Thanks for a great weekend and an absolutely brilliant course. I didn’t think it was possible for you to cram so much information into a weekend. I have learnt so much and fully intend to put it to good use. I can honestly recommend this course to anyone who wishes to expand their knowledge of the hills, and the skills to navigate their way off a mountain safely.
I thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed manner that you were able to convey the information that we required and were always ready with an answer to any question.
Thanks again for a great weekend. I’m sure I’ll be on one of your other courses soon. I hope that’s good news?
Cheers and give my best to Skye. Navigation & Hill Skills April 2011
I found Rob’s site whilst browsing the internet researching mountaineering instructors. I work full time as an IT trainer and live in Birmingham so managing to squeeze the time in to train to be a mountaineering instructor is a difficult balance to say the least. Initially I’d been looking into doing one of the fast track schemes offered these days. For me though that would have meant having to fork out a lot of money and take 3 months off work, something which wasn’t really an option. I also didn’t like the idea of rushing through my training. The type of skills that you need to do this type of work can’t be rushed. You need time to develop your experience. I wanted a way that I could train at the same time as continuing my current job. I came across Rob’s site, read about the mentor scheme and the rest as they say, is history…
I’ve been working with Rob Since August 2009, during that time I’ve achieved the following…
Improved my lead climbing grade from V Diff to comfortable HS, thinking about VS
Taken my SPA training (August 2010), I’ll be doing the assessment later this year
Taken my summer ML (Sept 2009) training, passed my assessment a year later (with confidence)
Taken my winter ML training (Feb 2011)
I took my first steps in crampons in November 2009. This winter as I mentioned earlier I did my winter ML training, I seconded South Route (IV 4/5) in Cwm Idwal (a cracking 2/3 pitch ice climb) and Green Gully (IV,4) on the Ben. The crazy thing was, I thought to myself afterward I’m not too far away from leading that! We’ll see how brave I feel next winter.
I’d never really been into scrambling. I did my first scramble with Rob in June 2009 when we first met for my very informal interview! I joined him and a couple of his clients on the final day of their 5 day scrambling and navigation course. (We tackled Tryfan’s north face). Last weekend I took my cousin out for a day’s scrambling in North Wales. I looked after him for the day and we did North West Face Route (2), The Idwal staircase (2) and finished off our day with the Cneifion Arete (3). I thoroughly enjoyed the day and felt completely happy leading and looking after Joe, who also had a fantastic time.
And lastly, in March, Rob and myself climbed the classic route A dream of white horses HVS 5a. This is a climb that I’ve been keen tackle for a number of years. Rob led the route and I seconded. Due to the nature of the climb, in particular the exposure and the consequences of a fall, I was thrilled that I climbed with confidence and that I enjoyed every minute of the route.
As can be seen from the above my own technical skills have improved tremendously over the last couple of years. The other element of the mentor scheme that has benefitted me is observing and working with Rob on the different courses that he runs. It has been great to work with a number of different clients of varying previous experience and look at different ways of passing on skills. I now feel comfortable teaching and instructing in a variety of areas.
All in all I have found the scheme to be really useful both in the development of my own skills and with increasing my confidence of instructing clients. I can’t recommend Rob readily enough and I look forward to working with him again in the future.
All the best
Jim Cockayne – Trainee Instructor Mentor Scheme
Hi Rob thanks again for a great weekend both myself and shem really enjoyed the course and your company. We both agreed the course met and exceeded our expectations, we plan to start hiding bags in fields as soon as we can! We had a great day yesterday, got up early did the north face of tryfan, leaped Adam and eve, and had the summit to ourselves, lovely. Tryfan was easier than i expected, Bristly Ridge was the highlight, quite challenging in parts. The plan now is to do some more grade 1’s maybe in the wet, and a little wild camping using our nav skills of course. Then you may well get a call next year for an advanced scrambling course for Jedi Knights! Bye for now. Jason – Navigation & Hill Skills April 2011
Many thanks again for a great week in the hills of snowdon. The course did everthing it promised plus some key skills on “spatial awareness”. Enjoyed your relaxed and informative way of teaching with no rushing and always ready to answer our many questions. All the best for you and your family Rob. Regards, Gavin. Navigation & Scrambling April 2011
Hi Rob, I just wanted to say a big thank you for a superb course last week. I wasn’t sure exactly what sort of Scrambling to expect, but successfully completing both the north ridge of Tryfan and Bristly Ridge was way beyond anything I had imagined us doing .
Alec was excellent – allowing us to choose our own route and make our own mistakes wherever possible, but also being there with guidance and moral support when he needed to be. Please pass on my thanks to him.
My objective in signing up for this course was to learn how to do “easy” scrambling in an safe and effective way. I accomplished this and much, much more – learning a lot about my own strengths and also areas needing some improvement! Thanks again – it was terrific. Best wishes, Steve – Intro to scrambling April 2011
Just to say a big thank you for a fantastic couple of days in beautiful Snowdonia. The course was excellent & helped my confidence hugely. I shall continue to try to be more ‘ballerina’ than ‘long-legged elephant’ with my foot-placement, it really did seem to make a difference. I appreciated your patience & encouragement & can only apologise again for the bad language when I got stuck or slipped & panicked!
And as for fixing the weather for yesterday – nice one! What a joy to be out amongst such stunning scenery & actually be able to see it all – loved it.
Thanks again & best wishes,
Julie, Advanced Scrambling – April 2011
Rob, A bit of a quick get away last night so not much time for pleasantries. Hope you had a safe trip home and haven’t been landed with too many chores for your 3 days at home. Many thanks for last week, had a great time and as ever managed to reach a level above my expectation and feel much better prepared to venture out alone and already planning next winters adventures in Canada 🙂 Take care and speak soon. Feel free to pass on my email address to the rest of the gang – they were great company!
Yours Gilbert – Ice Climbing in Rjukan March 2011
Hi Rob, I just wanted to drop you a line to say a big thank you for the coaching day we had with you on the 18th Feb on Moel Siabod. Gareth and I really enjoyed the day. We weren’t quite sure what to expect, especially as we’re not at our fittest 😉 but I have to say the tips you gave us really helped, not only on the day with you, but also for the rest of the week. As with all things giving us simple tips work so well and we often over look the basics. We went on to do Y Gribin ridge the next day which we really enjoyed and Gareth definitely wouldn’t have done beforehand. He was able to manage his wibbles much better and we both felt more confident to push ourselves with the routes we chose, not always opting for the easy line. Changing Gareth to leading has helped us both immensely and we both are enjoying the day out with less stress now. We repeated the North ridge of Tyfan in wetter conditions than we have before, this would definitely have put us off a bit! Anyway, thanks again and we’re both really looking forward to the course in July. All the best, Imogen, Private Guiding Feb 2011
Thanks very much for the week in Scotland. Getting to visit the Nevis Range, Glencoe and the Cairngorms all in a week was a real treat (and thanks especially for driving us all the way to the Cairngorms). Also the weather was never as grim as forecast for five days running, so thanks too to whoever runs the weather side on your courses. I’m looking forward to seeing the photos on your gallery. From your blog it seems you had a pretty exciting week after we left, but perhaps now you are back with the family in Wales. Thanks again for all your work on the course, I’m looking forward to Norway
Best wishes Julian Winter Skills 5 day course Feb 2011
Rob, Many thanks for a fantastic course. It looks as if we had the pick of
the weather so far this year! I had a great week and am looking forward
to practising my new skills in what is left of winter. Standing on top
of Ben Nevis on a glorious winter day topped off a fantastic week and is
a happy memory that will stay with me for a very long time. I hope you have some decent winter weather for the rest of the season.Take care, Dave Winter Skills 5 day course Jan 2011
Hi Rob, Cheers for a very enjoyable and fun week long course, sure I’ll be
booked on another of your courses in the near future. Regards Mike, Winter Skills 5 day course Jan 2011
Hey Rob, I just found a photo that I took earlier in the year, and I thought of you. I thought you might like. I know you’ve got millions, but this was a really nice one I took whilst camping in the summer. As I never sent a message (which I meant to but never got round to), I really want to say thanks for the weeks course. I have spent so many hours in the mountains before, not getting anywhere, but I learned so much, and also gained a lot of insight outside of the subject matter in a week. I had never been so happy to get up at 8am in my life. And if it wasn’t for work getting in the way and lack of cash, i’d be on one of your courses every bloody week if I could!
Just want to say thanks again, i’ve been out loads since, even with the shitty knee (if you remember). It’s given me the confidence to just head out, knowing I can find my way home. Best Wishes Chris Navigation & Scrambling November 2010
Hi Rob, thanks for a great week. it really was everthing I was hoping it would be, and can’t wait to get back and do some more! Once again, huge thanks for managing to teach so much in such a fun way. Looking forward to getting out on the mountains with you again. Best wishes, Tim Navigation & Scrambling November 2010
thank you for a great week on the 5 Day Summer Navigation and Scrambling Course. I learned a lot and also gained confidence in my newly found scrambling skills!I enjoyed the week thoroughly and am eagerly looking forward to the 5 Day Winter Skills in January. Thanks again, Mark Navigation & Scrambling November 2010
Hi Rob- Big thank you for a superb 2 days of scrambling, the addition of a cheeky abseil and the chance to lead was the icing on the cake, me and George were impressed with yours and Bryns leadership and guiding skills throughout. Hope to see you again soon Paul – Advanced Scrambling Sept 2010
Hi Rob, Just wanted to drop you a line to say many thanks for a fantastic three days’ scrambling last week. I learned a lot and, thanks to your excellent instruction, I definitely now feel much more confident about heading out to tackle some more of the grade 2 & 3 routes.
All in all it has been a bit of a whirlwind year for me after taking my first tentative steps out with you last August…then I even felt really nervous just walking up the Heather Terrace, let alone scrambling up Tryfan!
Your courses have certainly inspired me and, more importantly, have equiped me with an excellent grounding in mountaineering that I look forward to building upon.
As usual, one of the first things I did on getting home was to scan your diary pages to see what I could possibly do next with you!
I look forward to our next meeting for what is always an exciting, enjoyable time in the mountains. Cheers, Shae. Advanced Scrambling Aug 2010
Hi Rob, A quick note to say thanks once more for an awesome couple of days scrambling. Great routes, and the difficulty pitched just right for me and Sean – quite challenging at times, but not scary. As well as having a blast I felt I learned masses about actual real-world scrambling practice. So much so that I’d have no hesitation in going out and hitting a grade 2 now, with a view to progressing on to a 3 in the near future, and there’s no way I could have said that 3 days ago. The most valuable thing of all was being able to talk over the process of assessing risk while you’re actually there on the rock, and then arranging protection accordingly – it must seem like child’s play to you but for where I am now it’s the clincher. You’re an excellent teacher, and I felt supported at all times but never patronised. All in all a brilliant course – I’ll be back! Cheers Robin – Advanced scrambling June 2010
Mick was right when he said, You know when you have had a good time when you wake up the next day and are still smiling! Still smiling now. Cheers for a memorable week, each day had special moments that will last in my head for sometime. Special thanks to Rob & Sandy for keeping us safe all week. 😉 Gez – Skye Scrambling May 2010
Hi Rob, thankyou for a brilliant day on saturday – I got out of it exactly what I
was hoping for. I just needed that bit of guiding advice alongside me on a
VS climb just to boost my confidence and you provided that in bucket fulls!
So much so, that yesterday I was able to get out on the slate and lead
Seamstress (VS 4c) at Serengeti – I had a bit of disco leg but I put
everything into play from saturday and got up in good style. So heres to
more VS leading!! The blog looks good – it actually looks from the photos as if I know what I’m doing!!!! Again, many thanks – you’ve been a tremendous help. Jason Private Guiding May 2010
Hi Rob, many thanks for an excellent 3 days and another very enjoyable course under your expert guidance. I appreciated your leadership and patience particularly the latter as a novice scrambler!!
I would definitely recommend the course to anyone wishing to experience scrambling for the first time, as you have bulit up my confidence to tackle some routes which previously I may have avoided. I shall look forward to joining you on another course in 2010….
Alan, May 2010 Intro to Scrambling
I just wanted to say thank you for a fabulous couple of days scrambling the other week…the routes were incredible. Finding myself on the Cneifion Arete was terrific…I remember walking past it only last October and thinking, ‘that’s a scramble?!!’ and here I was on the route, loving every minute.
Your instruction was great as ever and I look forward to finding some free time again soon so I can book up another course with you. Thanks again, Shae. Advanced Scrambling April 2010
Hi Rob, I thought you might like some feedback on the Hill Skills and Navigation course now that I’ve found some free time to put something together. In a word – ‘brilliant’. I learnt so much over the two days and it has really whetted my appetite to do more and get further qualified. Rhian was first class form beginning to end. Her professionalism, experience, dedication and enthusiasm shone through – and was quite infectious! Even within 30 minutes of leaving our start point on day one, members of the group were remarking to each other about the little tips and skills that had already been picked up. Rhian’s style was perfect for the group – relaxed, fun and informative; she was also well aware of when group members were struggling with the pace or needed a little one on one to explain certain navigation techniques – which she always took time to do. The course was rounded off by the group’s joint sense of achievement after having scaled Tryfan and navigated our way down using the various techniques we’d all learnt. It was 3 days before my ‘buzz’ from the weekend finally subsided!
I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who wants to get more from the fabulous UK countryside and those who want to better themselves by picking up life-long navigation skills which can be used anywhere. Thanks again – and I’m already seriously considering subscribing to the 5 day course. I might be in touch soon!
Andy, Navigation & Hill Skills April 2010
Just a quick note to say thanks for the photos. I look a bit worried in
some of them! We had a great time and everyone (even me) agreed that our
second day of climbing was the best day of the holiday. I would even go
and do it again- it’s surprising how time and distance blur your memory.
John and I were saying that there is no way that we would want to take
responsibility for someone elses children the way you do. It’s a
testament to how good you are at your job that although I felt pretty
scared at times I always had complete trust in your ability to look
after my children, thanks again for a great time.
Best wishes, Kate – Family Rock Climbing April 2010
Hi Rob, Just wanted to email to say how much we enjoyed our day with you on Friday. Although the weather meant we had to change our original plans, (winter) climbing a gully was an unexpected bonus! I feel more confident now to have a go at some of the rope skills we used if needed, when Chris and I are next out and about.
We are both looking forward to booking some more time with you in the near future – perhaps we’ll manage some scrambling next time?!! Best Wishes, Julie & Chris Private Guiding April 2010
Hi Rob – Many thanks for an excellent course on Navigation and Hill Skills which I would recommend to anyone wishing to improve their navigation skills. I did sometimes think that I was on the Winter Skills course with the depth of snow and wintry conditions , but it was great and I really enjoyed it!! Thanks to you and Jim for a great time. I am just looking at your brochure re the 5 day course 10-14 May, the questions are can I persuade my ‘better half’ to let me loose again and can I scramble!!!?
Best Wishes Alan Navigation & Hills Skills Feb 2010
Rob, I thought that after my 4th fantastic course that it was high time that I join the ranks of satisfied punters and send you a note of formal thanks…..
Firstly, I must say that you make what can be sometimes be a daunting prospect (for example learning to climb for the 1st time) both very enjoyable and on contemplation seem like “a walk in the park”.
It has been a real joy and education to benefit from your relaxed but innately observant tuition. With your guidance it has really empowered me to strike out safely into new areas of mountains and hills with a new found confidence that I would have never of thought possible. Anyone wanting to learn new skills or develop their existing ones simply couldn’t do any better but benefit from some of your expertise and guidance. -Looking forward to seeing you in the Cuillins in May!
All the best – Stuart – Navigation & Hill Skills, Intro to Climbing, Intro to Scrambling & Winter Skills Weekend – Jan 2010
Hi Rob. I hope you and your family are well. Just a very brief message to thank you for a most spectacular week in the mountains ( again!! ). That hot-line you have to the weather gods really works, for us at least. Also a massive thanks for the dvd of pictures, they really are fantastic. If I can figure out how to, I will attempt to foward some of mine on. I can’t tell you how rewarding the two courses have been not only for experience and confidence building for “getting out there” but also for my own well-being. So thank you again – I would not hesitate in booking further courses or holidays with you. Sincerely Ed – Winter Skills 5 day Jan 2010
thank you so much for what was probably the most exciting two days of our lives (so far!) Now we are bitten by the scrambling bug, we shall return. Be in touch in the Spring, but until then, take care of yourself and our very best wishes to Mrs J. and the family, and of course, to little Skye.
Thanks again Sam and Heidi x

Hi Rob,Thank you for a great week – fantastic guiding and a really interesting course. I can’t wait to get back out to the hills – in fact I’ve just booked onto your winter skills course in Scotland! And I’m now off for a run to start getting fit for it.Thanks again and see you in Scotland! Best wishes, Rosie 5 day navigation and scrambling Oct 09
I am just dropping you a line following our ” Learn to Lead” course in September. Stu and Myself are still grinning from our week climbing in North Wales. Your Instruction was second to none, absolutely what we required, you pitched the course to our ability, which was better than we thought surprisingly ! This allowed us to stretch ourselves safely under your expert guidance and coaching. We learnt loads in a week, all of which was paced skilfully allowing us to build on new skills before we moved on. Your local knowledge in picking areas and routes, was also invaluable. Just to round up excellent week, excellent instruction, Thanks:-) I will be taking up your professional skills again in the near future, definitely. Kind Regards Jason & Stuart – 5 day learn to lead Sept 2009.
Hi Rob – Just to say thank you for a great day last weekend. Despite the weather we all enjoyed it. I must say it was a totally new experience for some of us in the group but you can safely say that you made our introduction to scrambling fun and very enjoyable. We will definitely do it again. Being together as a family in challenging weather conditions and in such a fantastic environment was a truly exhilarating time.
Kevin would also add that it was far more preferable than a shopping centre. Kind Regards Kathryn – Family Course Oct 09
Alright rob – -just wanted to drop you a line to thank you for a great course last 2 days.I appreciate your patience for answering all my questions and putting up with the constant chit chat – i hope you dont have too much of a headache!
was gutted to have to leave snowdonia last night for the 5 hour trek back to suburban boredom! work nice and quiet so far today so been online researching ropes, gear and a knot book( which i need!!!!) so i can get up there on my own and start to tick off the routes from the guide.
i have got the bug for it now in a big way, and plan on training hard to get my fitness and experience to a level so i can do the matterhorn in the next 2 years or so – i am sure you will be seeing me again when i am ready to make that next step.
thanks again, and enjoy your alps trip you lucky boy, and good luck with all the dog training and nappy changing!!
kind regards Dan Advanced scrambling Sept 09
“I wanted to say thanks for another fantastic week, I like it when an instructor pushes his clients to new things if and when they are ready and the sea cliffs rocked including the brazen elements and trumping fog-horn! I have had my chums in stitches regaling that tale already! I will also be checking the Forum on your site anon, as you recommended, to try and see if I can get out and about with others in the coming months. Awesome to have your guidance as always and I hope you enjoyed the Whisky. Mike – 5 day learn to lead Aug 09
“On behalf of both Charl and I… We just wanted to say thank you very much for the 3 days we had scrambling & climbing. Far exceeded both our expectations..!! Learnt so much, had loads of fun and lucky with the weather. Top banana..!!!
Your enthusiasm, passion for the job and high levels of professionalism all being fantastic attributes – all providing a much enjoyable and safe environment. Lots to now put into practise and develop further. “New Boots & Panties” today…. “El Capitan” tomorrow (you have to have goals in life – yeah right…) Two clients who will for sure be returning. See you in the winter months (maybe for a rope skills/problem solving session?) Take care. Cheers!!! Steve & Charl. Private Guiding July 09
“I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for last week – it was awesome and just what I needed. Being able to be taught the essential building blocks and develop from there through the week is important because of the confidence it gives you to go off on your own steam. Best regards Mike” 5 day navigation and scrambling course June 09
“Just wanted to drop you a line to say thanks for the training on navigation and scrambling. You have given me confidence that I have the skills to navigate in the hills and I must keep practising it to be confident in poor visibility. Scrambling adds another dimension. I walked up Tryfan again last Saturday had a great view of a ring ouzel, photo enclosed. It is – honest. Thanks again Rob and hope all goes well for the birth of the 4th addition to your family. Kind regards Lynda” 5 day navigation and scrambling course June 09
“Just excellent. Rob is not only a nice guy and a fine teacher, but he has a deep well of patience. On a two day navigation course he took three people with completely different levels of knowledge and skill at the start – from complete beginner to tolerably competent – and, within their capabilities, got each of them to where they wanted to be. There may be more intensive navigation courses than Rob offers, but I doubt there are more effective ones. It was also a lot of fun. Highly recommended.”
Nicholas Timmins – Navigation & Hill Skills May 2009
Just a quick note to thank you so much for organizing everything for us yesterday – we all had a great day, despite the terrible weather. Kurtis was fantastic and a great guide,he really looked after us well and was fun to be with – I hope he had a good day too.
We all definitely want to do some more mountaineering!! So will be in touch.
Jo – Climb Snowdon – May 09
Just a quick one to say thanks again for the brilliant course and walking. I loved it!!!!!! am definitely coming back to learn to climb as am totally in love with North Wales and especially Snowdonia, just need to get Peru trek done and then in August/September, will hopefully have some spare cash…… Anyway thanks again and i wish you, Kate the kids and the one on the way all the very, very best for the future!!!!! Thanks again for looking out for me, lots of love, Emma xxxx Mountain Navigation & Hill Skills May 09
A great day had by us both, good skills learnt and put into action on the following morning as we ascended Tryfan ourselves. Was wonderful to have the confidence to leave the well trodden paths and climb our own way to the summit. Most satisfying! Thanks again and already thinking about our next visit. Dave (Mono Man) Taylor. 🙂

Hi Rob, Just wanted to say thanks for the weekend, I really enjoyed it and certainly learnt what I wanted to. I am definitely considering a Scottish winter course with you for next February. Thanks again and hope to see you in Scotland soon.
Simon – Welsh Winter Skills Weekend Feb 09
Thanks for 3 great days. I really enjoyed the way you managed to get a great balance between breadth and depth in what we covered. Yesterday was an absolute belter and I loved the session we did on the ice and snow. My quads feel like they have been attacked with a hammer from all of the crampon work and I will need a good run tonight to get them working again! I will definitely be doing some more with you next year so please keep me on your mailing list.
Thanks Craig – Winter Skills 3 day Jan 09
Rob, A quick thank you for last week – had a great time, thoroughly enjoyed the course and the company wasn’t too bad either!! I needed the rest this weekend but back on the treadmill today trying to lose the extra pounds I put on!! Take care, Simon Winter Skills 5 day Jan 2009
Hi Rob – Just wanted to say thanks for a great weekend! We both really enjoyed it and learned a great deal indeed. You are a very patient and knowledgeable teacher and obviously enjoy what you do – well why wouldn’t you! It was a very long drive back on Sunday (and Monday) and I am covered head to toe in bruises – but it was still excellent! Thanks once again and we will definitely be joining you again at some point!
Suzie and Paul – Winter Skills Weekend Jan 09
Rob – I had a fabulous time on Tuesday and Wednesday, I think you got the level and pace exactly right and I enjoyed the very focused delivery with your friendly and approachable style. So given that I’ll be in touch about doing some more stuff with you as you’re nice and local and I’m convinced you could make me into a better mountaineer and climber (although if we go up slippy stuff again I may wear different boots )!
Cheers – Steve – Advanced Scrambling Nov 08
Great two days, lots of fun and some truly awesome weather. I thoroughly enjoyed the two days and fully met my aims for the course. The course was well structured, building skills and confidence progressively. I found your teaching style supportive and lots fun, even in the worst of weather conditions. I’d strongly recommend this course for anyone who wants to enjoy the mountains confidently and safely.Carl – Navigation & Hill Skills November 08

I just got back from a two day intro to scrambling course in Snowdonia,It was amazing here’s a couple of pics let me know what you think….

I did a winter skills course with Rob earlier this year in Fort William, he certainly knows his stuff and is a top bloke and very good teacher.
I’ve done ML training at PYB and done weekend courses with Rob Johnson. Both seemed very good value to me. With Rob you get a lot of 1:1 or 1:2 tuition which means you can learn a lot in a short time. Also can endorse tryfans comment about Rob being a good teacher and a top bloke.
Many thanks for the Navigation Weekend
I learned a lot and had some necessary practice.
Thank you for your patience and enthusiasm.
I would recommend the course highly.
All the best, Gwen – Oct 08 Hill Skills
Hi Rob, Thanks so much for the weekend of scrambling, we all thoroughly enjoyed it,
and I’m sure we’ll soon be back there doing it for ourselves. I was telling an RSPB friend about the weekend’s exploits & he thought it sounded so good that he might like to do a similar thing. Please could you send him a brochure.Enjoy your well-earned break this week,
Best wishes from Janet – Family Scrambling Course Sept 08
Hi Rob,Thank you again for making it a great week on Classic Rock, and for managing to arrange a full week’s climbing despite the weather! I will certainly be recommending you to friends, and also hope to join you on another course soon. I really enjoyed the climbing on all 5 days. I also enjoyed the company, experienced new activities such as bouldering and sea cliff climbing, learnt a few things, and I think improved my climbing a bit, too. Hope the Alps trek is a big success. Probably be in contact before too long about something in Scotland this winter, and maybe some nav. Also thinking I might return on Classic Rock next year to tick the rest off – hopefully I’ll be climbing VS by then.Best wishes, Mark. Classic Rock – July/Aug 08
Hi Rob – I have been meaning to write for weeks now – to say a massive thank you for all your help, expertise and patience on the Learn to Lead course – and for keeping us happy on those slightly damp days! I have managed to get out climbing at least twice a week since so lots of putting everything into practice which has been great, and not a climb goes by without me remembering and using any number of the things you taught us! It has made a huge difference being able to set up my own belays and I think (though it sometimes doesn’t feel it half way up!) that my confidence in leading is slowly growing. So many thanks again and I hope to get back to do another course some day.
Hope all is well with you. Kind regards Kirsty – 5 day learn to lead – July 08
Hi Rob,This is just a quick note from Alice and Matt (from the intro to climbing 5/6th July) to thank you once again for a brilliant course. We enjoyed it so much that as soon as we got back to London, we signed up at the local bouldering wall in London Bridge and now have the bruises to prove it. Hopefully we’ll be back on ‘real’ rock faces soon! (I’m sure you’ll get a call when we need a bit more help as well)I’ve included some pictures of Borthwen beach near Rhoscolyn, which you suggested to go and take a look at, and also a nice picture of where we went climbing on the second day.Hope you are well and that your family are settling in well in their new home Best wishes Alice & Matt – Intro to Climbing July 08
A quick note to thank you for a truly great weekend. It was really enjoyable, and being able to put my navigation techniques to the test in such amazing scenery was a real bonus.
I saw your photos in the gallery – Sally looks a lot more at home in exposed positions than I ever will! I’ve uploaded my best photos to a picasa album here.
All the best, and I hope your scrambling course goes well this week. Roddy – Hill Skills July 08
I wanted to thank you for a brilliant day on Wednesday.
I learnt a lot and your excellent teaching helped me remember some things too. I really enjoyed the day, although I was exhausted when I got home! Intro to Navigation July 08
Rob and Josh,
Thank you for a most enjoyable and worthwhile day on the hills; I can’t wait to try on my “home turf”. Judging by the amount of rain I met , on my way home, we were very lucky with the weather.
Best wishes Gilllian – Intro to Navigation July 08
Just quickie to say thanks for a great time last week and for all your help with the climbing – I feel that I got a huge amount out of it. Hope all’s going well with the house Tom, Adventure Travel Magazine – Rock Improver June 08

Just a quick note to say ‘thanks for the brill w/e in Snowdonia on the Hill Skills course. I always think learning should be fun and enjoyable to be truly effective and you certainly achieved that on the course! Many thanks for the NNAS certificate, which I received at the end of last week; I look forward to putting it all into practice again in the very near future. I certainly intend to sign up for the Intro to Scrambling Course at some point, but as I’m off to work in Milan for 6-9 months very soon, I’m not sure when I will be able to do so. Still, I’m looking forward to some trekking in the Dolomites and maybe even do a couple of via ferratas as a warm up in the meantime.
Thanks again and best wishes for the future,
Regards Keith Hill Skills & Navigation April 08
Thanks for the photos, we had a really excellent time and wish we were
doing it all over again this weekend.
However we are looking forward to trying out our new navigation skills
in the lakes tomorrow and Sunday !.
Thanks again, Sarah – Hill Skills & Navigation April 08
Rob – Thanks for the 3 days in Wales – as always a great experience and I
have returned ready to prepare for the next! Will try to keep the climbing
practice up so that I get more confident too.
Thanks for the CD – can’t get it to load on my computer, but managed to open
it on my son’s laptop!
Hope your weekend wasn’t marred by the weather and that you didn’t have to
cancel any clients – Monica – Private Guiding April 08
Just thought i’d say thank you for a brilliant two days scrambling. I learnt much more than I expected and am now in the process of finding some money to buy a climbing rack so I can get out myself! All the best with the upcoming move, hopefully see you soon

I’ve only just got a chance to email you to thank you for a fantastic weekend in Snowdonia. It was good to learn from you and to have some company in the hills with like minded people. Although I think my tendency to drift off into a world of my own will be hard to overcome!
A very nice friend has actually bought me membership of the BMC and registration on the Mountain Leader scheme. So it looks like I’m doing the Mountain Leader training, which means more lovely weekends in Snowdonia and hopefully Scotland!!!
Anyway hope to see you again. Take care

Had a great time on the course. Thanks a lot. I even managed to go back on the gondola and round where we were on Saturday during last week and take some photos, which was very exciting.

Rob hi, Sam and I received the CD with the pictures of the winter skills weekend
this morning and I just wanted to write to let you know what a wonderful
time we had. The instruction was first class, the setting was amazing
and we had a great time and had our aspirations totally met and
exceeded. I’m still assimilating the information passed on by yourself
and have found a new confidence to be able to look up at the winter
hills and not feel like its beyond us now. I also felt that we came
away having gained not just the skills but some new friends which is
always a huge bonus. In addition to all this we’d like to undertake the intro to scrambling
course with yourself. Thanks once more. Nik and Sam Winter Skills 2008
Thankyou for the winter skills week it was absolutely fantastic. Once again thankyou and I will see you in April – Jason – Winter Skills 2008
Thank you for a fantastic couple of days, as you know I really enjoyed
pushing the boundaries yesterday! I loved your relaxed encouraging style,
you were just the inspiration I needed to help me see a way through to
achieving change in my life. Journey home slow into London so not tucked up
in bed till after midnight – had to have a hot bath – I definitely know
which muscle groups are used for scrambling!
Monica – Private Guiding – Dec 07
Thank you so so much for a fabulous weekend, I enjoyed it so much and
the smile still hasn’t left my face. I just wish I was back in Sella
today rather than at my desk, I really did fall in love with that place.
The photo’s on your gallery are great! Im looking forward to booking the next trip with you-just gotta decide what that is!

Back at work today (uhh!). Just wanted to say thank you for the last two days advanced scrambling in Snowdonia. Clogwyn-y-person Arete will stay with me forever and I have a permanent grin on my face reliving the memories of the two days and what I achieved thanks to your guidance and expertise. It has made me determined to carry on and gain more experience in readiness for scrambling on Skye next year and one day I’ll get to do the Cullins traverse. As always it was great to see you. Hope the move goes well next year. Regards, Mandy Advanced Scrambling Nov 07
Rob – Thanks for an ace weekend – Adam and I are now trying to plan a trip to the
peaks before we forget everything. Almost certainly we’ll be back for more
multi pitch and some new skills once we done a little more practice. Chris & Adam – Learn to lead Oct 07
I just wanted to say thanks for a great four days in Wales. As usual the standard of instruction, choice of venues and routes were superb.
I am constantly impressed by your professionalism and apparent ability to deal with anything nature throws at you. This is borne out by the fact that despite being lashed by wind and rain on the top of Glydr Fawr and descending something akin to a waterfall, all three of us left the hill with a smile on our faces! Well done! Thanks again – Mark – Multi Pitch Climbing & Advanced Scrambling Sept 07
Hope your well first off thanks for an excellent week trekking we both really enjoyed the experience and it has given us lots of ideas for future holidays. Everything from your guiding to the places we stayed and visited were superb. The night in the hut was something to remember and hopefully repeat. We found a nice restaurant in Zermatt just behind the hotel called Chez Gaby give it a try next time your there. We are looking at taking a break in Snowdonia next April and I can take two days to fit in the Navigation course. This holiday has got me thinking about doing the Mountain Leader course and looking at what my ambitions are, so once again Rob thanks for a great trip and look forward to seeing you soon. Many Thanks S & A – Arolla to Zermatt Alpine Trek 2007
We had such a briliant time, Thanks Rob it’s the best thing I’ve done – ever! I don’t think we’ll ever forget it. I hope that you enjoyed the mad Evans family as much as we enjoyed being in that magnificent place. The train went like clockwork and we got back to Arolla around 2ish. All the tolls etc were as your course notes. A fantastic end to a fantastic holiday.
Arolla to Zermatt Alpine Trek – Aug 2007
Hi Rob – Just wanted to let you know that we are not in fact still wandering around, scratching our heads, in Snowdonia so you must have done a good job. We had a lovely day and almost didn’t get wet. The ascent was interesting to navigate and beautiful, we’ll do something more difficult next time. Thanks for a fun and very useful weekend. Regards, Joanna – Hill Skills July 2007

“I just wanted to say thank you for a great couple of days. The instruction was superb, as was the choice of routes. I feel I have learnt a lot. “Hi Rob, What a fantastic time mate, brilliant!! That’s the best Birthday treat I had thus far in all my 21(ish) years, thank you. How you managed to arrange the weather as well as wonderful climbing in The Pass and Idwal is a mystery, but I guess I’m just used to the best from you by now. I’ll literally never forget the days we had, with the fun & laughs. Thanks again Rob. Regards Bill”
Private Guiding Learning to lead April 2007
“Just wanted to say thank you for a great winter skills week! I felt I learnt a great deal about the skills required to place myself in a winter environment in the mountains. This course was a perfect introduction before completing my first mountaineering trip to the Alps this summer. I would strongly recommend this course to anybody in a similar situation. The course was tailored to compensate for the members current knowledge, fitness and experience so the week was always geared to be learning new skills. A big thanks, keep in touch and look forward to completing a course with you soon. Ice climbing I think!
P.S I’m still not convinced that the pasta water should be used for hot chocolate! All the best Rob. Ben Potts- Winter Skills February 2007”.
“Rob,I just wanted to say thinks for your time during the Winter Skills course that recently we took with you. It went about as perfectly as we could have wished. I particularly liked the way that you took us through a range of learning in a very practical way, everything from diet through to a gradual and progressive development of technical skills, often without us actually realising how much we had learned until we practised again the following day. And of course, it was fun as well.We are now thinking about next steps and of course, how we engage you further. Thanks again and all the very best” Graham winter skills Feb 07
Hi Rob – I just arrived home, and after the compulsory bragging and exaggerating to Teresa, I wanted to write and thank you for the wonderful experiences this week. There were some wonderful highlights, not least of which was the delight I felt at finishing Great Western, Dinas Mott at your encouragement. “Just a quick note to say many thanks for a great week. It was tremendous to gain the benefit of some of the vast experience yourself and Martin have. I found the course to have a great balance and to be fun (most of the time!). Hope to see you again sometime soon and the best of luck in September when you are back up there.” Skye Ridge Traverse Course May 2005
Just writing to say thanks for a couple of amazing days in the mountains, the course far exceeded my expectations and took me way out of my normal comfort zone and what I though I was capable of. I enjoyed your instruction and interesting facts about the mountains and despite a couple “wobbly” moments always felt I was in safe hands.Traversing onto and then climbing up the face of the Dolmen buttress are moments that will stay with me for a quite a while ! brilliant ! How my legs kept going on Friday I’m not sure, will power and adrenaline I think, I’m VERY sore today and wishing I lived in a bungalow ! Thanks again Cheers Paul – Grade 2 and 3 scrambles – Advanced scrambling course October 2005
“Just a quick note to say a big thank you for the weekend. So many memories, I’m finding it hard to concentrate at work today. The scrambling was excellent, the snow an added bonus and I’m now totally hooked. You may make a mountaineer out of me yet!” Mandy April 06 Intro to scrambling

“I just wanted to write and express my thanks for a great trip to La Grave. My first time climbing in the Alps was a little daunting, knowing that I would be trying my hand at quite a few things I’ve never tried before, but you guys really inspired confidence. Looking back at the photo’s it was just an amazing experience and climbing icefalls where you can see and hear the water running behind the ice while your several hundred metres up is something I know I’ll never forget.
I would certainly recommend your services!” James – Ice Climbing in La Grave Jan 05

“Just a quick mail to say thanks for the ace time I had on the Hill Skills course back in October. A long time to get a response I know, but I have only just dryed out!Since then I have had fun getting my family lost, and boring everyone at work with my contouring technique around the desktops! It has inspired me to get out on the hills a lot more, in fact I’ll be back in Snowdonia this coming weekend trying out the Glyders! Who knows, this year maybe a scrambling course? Hope the business is thriving – onwards and upwards!” Hill Skills Course
